We first visited 30 years ago, and the quaintness is just as much in tact. No wifi, no internet, no TV's in the room, just good food (really excellent dinner) and drinks in an amazing setting. Dinner is served when the gong goes, and not before.Dinner will be from a choice of three dishes, which included Venison, ox cheek or... More

We visit this hotel every year when we compete at the Lowther Carriage Driving competition and have always loved the whole experience. However, we went again this weekend and it was even better. The same atmosphere and values, the same great service, but the food had taken a step up. It was always lovely, but now it's amazing. If you... More

Enjoyed a walk from Pooley Bridge to Howtown. On arrival it was raining so stopped here for lunch. Good selection of sandwiches and a lovely carrot and orange soup. Lovely selection of cakes also. Would recommend.

We stopped here hoping for a reasonable lunch following a trip on the steamer and in readiness for a walk back to Glenridding. Whilst the location is great and the new tea room very smart if a bit dark we found the choice of food very limited and most definitely over-priced. The staff were cheery and helpful but the food... At a time where our lives are seemingly dictated by the rings and vibrations of our mobile phones, it's been a pleasant and reassuring experience to be able to take a step away from all the hustle and bustle of modern life and spend a weekend in a very relaxing and homely atmosphere. If you're looking for a stay similar... More

We travelled on the Ullswater steamer and only stopped here as our young children were too hungry to wait until the next stop. We found the lovely tea room - truly delicious soup, tasty sandwiches and helpful staff who seemed to enjoy their work. Service a little slow but understandable as quite bust. Nice stop for lunch/snack.

This hotel is situated in a magnificent, almost solitary spot, just yards from Ullswater. The owners and staff are very welcoming. Breakfast and dinner are at set times, announced by the gong. The food is plentiful and delicious - you won't need much, if any, lunch! The rooms are clean and well-maintained, and there are gallons of hot water! The... More

Just got back from a two-night stay at this charming little hotel. We're in our forties and were (by far) the youngest guests. Not a minus in my book, though. The hotel is quite competently run, with friendly staff. Ms. Baldry is no longer doing all the cooking, and I believe that the dinners have gotten just a touch more... More

We went on the boat from Pooley Bridge to Howtown and timed it for lunch at the tea rooms. It was a 5 minute walk from the boat to the hotel, but there were no signposts. Turn right when you get off the boat! The scones were great and the tearoom staff kindly adjusted the sandwich filling to cater for... More
