We stayed here 2 nights as part of the 3 week tour. This lodge was pretty good over over all and I would recommend it since it's so close (5 minutes) to Ankarana National Park. Pros: - Good food - Cold bottled water and beer - Some wildlife on the grounds - Virtually no bugs - Very close to Ankarana NP Cons: - Room was a bit stuffy with dirty floors (The grounds are mostly dirt and it was windy) - Our door wouldn't stay closed which isn't fun in the middle of the night - Staff was fine but not overly friendly (this was common at all lodges) Note that this lodge is a 3.5 hour drive from the airport at Diego Suarez on a REALLY bad road that our driver affectionately called the RN "sick" instead of "6". So, plan accordingly.
Very nice room with all the confort needed (shower inside with hot water, everyrhing clean) at a very correct price comparing to the other options in Ankarana. The nicest was the kindness of the owners who will do everything to make your stay perfect! We highly recommend! Anselme & Lina
It takes a while before they respond to e-mails, but it is possible (and necessary) to make a reservation. It can get fully occupied at times. The staff is very friendly and for instance they gave us a lower price for the vegetarian option of their 'dish of the day'. Don't expect a swimming pool or a luxurious restaurant. But the rooms are spatious, the hotel grounds full of flowering trees, the food in the restaurant is good, the prices are affordable and it is just a 10 minute walk to the national park entrance. So, a very good place to stay!
During our stay for 3 days in Ankarana we stayed in two separate hotels, since both of them were fully booked on different days. This gives me the opportunity to compare the two hotels. The two hotels are Le Relais de l’Ankarana (RA) and Ankarana Lodge (AL). Price: RA was half the price of AL Rooms: Both are spacious, and both have plenty of windows that can be opened with screens. Plus both have musquito nets. Pool: RA has no pool, AL does and has some chairs and umbrellas next to it. Bar: Both hotels have a bar area AC: RA has no AC, AL does although only between 6-10 pm and it hardly had any effect. Both hotels had a fan. Restaurant: Both have a restaurant, but the scenery of AL is very pretty whilst RA is basic. Food: The quality of the food at RA was way better compared to AL Hospitality: The people at RA are way friendlier than at AL. It is like they care more about you being there. Location: RA is right next to the main road and very close to the National Park. AL is 400 meters of the road but has it own tsingy which you can visit with a guide. But note, do not take the night tour through the tsingy ar AL. It is way too dangerous. Day tours are fun. Both options were good. However we felt more at home at Relais de l’Ankarana because of the hospitality and the great food. But if you like a pool then the lodge is the place to go. Anyway, considering Madagascar standards, you really cannot go wrong with either of the two. But the price difference is too big.…
This was our most basic accommodation in Madagascar, but was OK. The food was acceptable and the room, though very basic, was fine with the shower providing adequate flow of hot water. One night was quite enough. Be warned: the roads in the North of Madagascar are dreadful.
