Mikeno Lodge is a 90 minute drive from Goma and offers beautifully appointed bungalows and fine dining. The lodge, restaurant, and bar are all located within a forest and offer beautiful views of the rift valley and Nyiragongo and Mikeno volcanoes. Nature walks and visits to local places of interest can be arranged. There is an abundance of bird life, as well as resident blue monkeys, colobus monkeys, and baboons. Chimpanzees are also frequent visitors to the area. The Senkwekwe Center for orphan mountain gorillas is just a 10 minute walk from the lodge and can be visited daily.

We recently returned from our second trip to Virunga National Park and Mikeno Lodge. This park holds a special place in our hearts. Not only because of the landscape and the wildlife, but because of the people. The dedication of everyone connected to the park (rangers, trackers, tourism staff, lodge staff, etc) is unbelievable. They all stand whole-heartedly on the frontline of conservation, and it is demonstrated everyday in their professionalism and level of service. The lodge has incredibly gorgeous views, with blue and colobus monkeys cavorting overhead. The cottages themselves are wonderful and you will welcome the warmth from the fireplace in the evening (already lit when you return from dinner). Speaking of dinner, we are vegans and Mikeno’s new Chef, Lita (pronounced Leet), did a wonderful job of accommodating us. What’s extra-special about staying at Mikeno is that, in addition to the gorilla trekking, you can spend time visiting the Senkwekwe Gorilla Sanctuary (read more about its history and purpose on the park’s website), as well as the Widow’s Workshop. Be sure to leave some extra space in your suitcase to bring home some of the absolutely spectacular textile creations made in the workshop. The quality is excellent and the designs are gorgeous. If you have time to visit the Congohounds unit, that is also worthwhile. It’s worth booking an extra day to take all this in, as you may not have time left in the day after a gorilla trek. Getting a glimpse of the day-to-day activities of the Park’s Headquarters (where Mikeno Lodge is located) is also interesting, and the resident baboons provide entertainment as well. Virunga Park is about more than gorillas and your trip will be greatly enriched if you spend some time beforehand reading about the myriad of sustainability projects being undertaken by the Virunga Alliance to create an alternative economy that allows surrounding communities to benefit from the national park. As for the gorilla treks: what can we say beyond the fact that this is our second time to DRC to do this, and for our most recent visit we booked 3 treks. It is one of the most amazing and humbling experiences ever, to be allowed an hour to sit with a gorilla family in their world, on their own terms, wild and free. The only reason why this is possible is because of the trust, respect and personal relationships painstakingly built-up over the years between the gorillas and the rangers and trackers. It gives one hope for the future. Virunga Park staff take security incredibly seriously and we felt completely safe every day, on both of our visits. We booked direct through the park website (visitvirunga) and their online booking staff took care of every detail. This is hands-down the best place to trek gorillas. Your tourist dollars in DRC make a difference. Don’t hesitate, just go.

We stayed 2 nights in Feb 2020 at Mikeno Lodge, and couldn't have been more pleasantly surprised by the relaxed sophistication of this operation. We've been in several (lots) of "jungle" (tropical rain-forest, off grid) lodges in South America, Asia and Africa, and I'd have to say this was the most pleasant all-around experience we've had. Food, lodging, service - the whole ball of wax, reflecting other's comments. The hike to the gorillas was only 1.5 hours each way so a total of 4 hours with visit, rather than the 7 hours incl visit we experienced in Uganda. The viewing was better, we saw 3 groups instead of one, and they were more interesting here. All in all, well worth the $ and an all around enjoyable adventure. Beware the bumpy roads.

Dear 7continents-more2c, I'm delighted to hear that you'd rate us top of all the lodges you've stayed in! We try to provide something extra special for our visitors and I'm glad that that was reflected in your experiences with us. Seeing 3 families in one trek is a pretty rare occurrence so you got really fortunate there but we'd definitely agree that "our" gorillas are more interesting no matter how many families you meet! Hoping to see you again soon! Kind regards, Kevin

My husband and I just returned from a trip to DRC to go gorilla trekking and to climb Nyiragongo. We stayed at Mikeno Lodge for 4 days and absolutely loved it. The lodge is beautiful, very peaceful and incredibly comfortable: comfortable king sized bed, perfect pillows, plentiful hot shower, flushing toilet, fireplace started for you in the evening, and the food was always delicious and plentiful (unlimited buffet breakfast and three course lunches and dinners) as well. The staff at the lodge are attentive. Whatever clothes we left for washing was returned to us the same day. Dietary accommodations were made during mealtimes for two vegetarian fellow travelers. Julie, Clemens and Busy (phonetic spelling) were absolutely delightful and took care of us very well. Thank you for a wonderful experience at Mikeno Lodge!
