We stayed here in March 2018, and again in October 2020. This time, it was just a stopover on a trip, and we wanted to stay away from population centers. We got in late after a long drive, and everything was great. The large rooms are relaxing, hospitality is awesome. It's family owned, and you are dealing with the owners/managers/cooks - so they are invested and engaged. Breakfast was cooked to order, they have a cute little gift shop of handmade crafts, love the common areas as well.

The Brightwood Inn is a great location to visit the parks, and the breakfasts were good . The entire Inn from the exterior and interior needs to be refreshed, gardens cleaned out old furniture replaced, and aluminum roof flashing flapping in the wind repaired. Our first night there after all day hiking in the park we went to bed and started to smell sour urine (yuck, not a good night sleep), the next morning we talked to the Inn keeper, and the next night the bed was corrected and fresh smelling. The room interior needed refreshed, replace the old stained carpet, old faded wallpaper borders replaced and the tile grout in the bathroom cleaned of the black mold growing on it. I'm not sure it was worth the cost of the room. I also would guardedly recommend this Inn to friends with warnings.

Yes you are right the entire Inn needs to be refreshed both inside and out, but 2020 is not the year. We have been slammed with people since the middle of June with the only break being in August when the Derecho ripped through here and we had no power for 6 days. Why do you think it looks like this on the outside? A Derecho is a land hurricane. We had 100 mph winds sustained for 30 minutes. We sustained a lot of damage as did everyone in the area. We finally got a bid last week for repairs. Contractors all over northern IL are slammed with work. If you are insinuating that your bed was not clean I can assure you that everything from the pillow covers to the mattress cover was washed fresh. NO ONE has EVER stayed here and slept on an unclean bed. EVERYTHING on your bed was clean. I know because I do all the laundry and make all the beds. I'm not some hired hand here. I have a vested interest in the Brightwood Inn. When we removed everything we smelled every single item. After we were finished Kevin's mom came over and thoroughly smelled it as well. She has a nose like a bloodhound and could detect no smell at all. Nothing. We determined you were one of those that wants their bed changed nightly and instead of asking nicely makes up a reason. The mold in the bathroom occurred during the 6 days our power was out as it was very humid and the temp was ungodly hot. As soon as we slow down here we will take care of it. It is not a simple clean, but an overnight job. I don't know if it's black mold as there are several different types of bathroom mold. Which are unsightly but not dangerous to health. We are in the process of updating rooms but we can't replace everything in this 10,000 square foot building with 9 rooms at once. Especially in a covid year when we don't know if the governor will shut our area down today. Fortunately for us there are very few people like you who stay here. The house full we had this weekend more than makes up for your kind. We have a great amount of return business and for good reason. You really should have left that first morning. Had you left I would have been happy to give you your money back. Instead YOU made the choice to stay. Please don't ever recommend us to anyone you know.

This was our second time to Brightwood Inn. The home is undoubtedly beautiful, welcoming and a great location. The couple that runs it are indifferent business owners. Not welcoming at all... So surprising for B & B owners. We weren’t there to make friends or be social so it didn’t really bother us much, but I feel it’s worth noting. Our disappointment was we had a shower that was not working appropriately and the way the owners handled the situation. We could get hot and cold water when the faucet was turned on, but as soon as the diverter was engaged only scalding hot water came out of the shower head. We dealt with it to get ready for the day, but reported it to the male owner. He was completely indifferent (again) and only stated “that’s weird” when told of the shower malfunction. A little while later, while we were eating breakfast (which was very good) the female owner came to our table to let us know she had called the couple that stayed in our room the night before to ask if they had trouble with the shower. (Mind you it is a Sunday morning!) She told us the couple said they didn’t have any problem with the shower. We thought “that is fine that they didn’t have any trouble...We did!” We wanted to say “Go check instead of bothering the previous guests on a Sunday morning to ask them!” We just finished our breakfast and left. We feel the owners were very unprofessional, and actually insulting, handling this the way they did. This is no way to be as a B&B owner. We enjoyed the Inn for its beauty and comfort. However, we have decided won’t be back due to the owners handling this situation so poorly.

I am really sorry that you feel this way. I went right to the office and marked the room out of service as I was fully expecting to be calling a plumber. As soon as everyone had checked out Kevin went up to the room and checked the shower. It was working properly. He had no problem regulating the temperature. Everyone who checks in here gets my cell phone number. I encourage everyone to call me if they have any problem. You said it happened twice. Had you let us know the first time we could have gone up to your room and checked it out for you while you were still here. Perhaps figured out why it did not work properly for you. I called the people who left earlier the day you checked in because often times guests do not like to convey there was a problem. They had been here for three nights. I wanted to make certain one way or the other if it had worked or not. They didn't have a problem with it. They have been here many times and had no problem with me calling them on a Sunday morning after 9am. I told you that we would check it out as soon as you left that day. Your comment was that it was not really a problem since the Jacuzzi worked. Again I apologize for being unprofessional and insulting. I wish you pleasant journey's and edible pizza in the future.

We returned to the Illinois Valley to celebrate two family birthdays and opted to stay at Brightwood instead of the usual chain motels. We were not disappointed by our decision and plan to patronize the inn on future visits. The inn is located in the country near several state parks and tourist attractions; however, its location provides a peaceful escape from those crowds if desired. It's set back on the property quite adequately reduces noise from traffic on the road that fronts the property. Our room was well appointed and decorated in keeping with a Door County theme. The east-facing orientation was flooded by the warmth of each morning sun and provided a striking view of a full moon rising above the Illinois prairie. It provided sufficient space to serve our needs while also retaining a cozy, comfortable space for quiet evenings to unwind. Sharon and Kevin are wonderful hosts who make every effort to ensure their guests' needs are met or exceeded. Kevin's skills in the kitchen resulted in scrumptious cooked to order breakfast options in addition to the homemade granola, cereal, fruit and yogurt available at the buffet bar. In summation, we were quite impressed and very pleased with our experience at Brightwood Inn. In fact, we have made reservations for a return stay in a few months.
