We stayed in the hotel which was very comfortable and ate outside on the Veranda which had good food and great views. We were there mid week and avoided the crowds which made it even better. Super convenient to hiking trails.
Place is worn internally, needs internal painting, upgrades in bathroom--water fixtures, water plumbing pressure. Barely OK for an overnight stay, but the price is outrageous! Front desk staff were all very helpful and the parking was adequate.
Flexibility plays an important role in being a good manager. I reserved room in advance, yet My fault I didn’t read NOT Pets friendly rule on the website. I drove 8 hours with my wife to enjoy the perfect anniversary. Visualize With A Sense Of Knowing. What would you do as a Manager of this place? Nobody’s perfect. We make mistakes. We learn. I think, people is not important in manager’s feelings. My wife, my dog and I slept into the car whole night to avoid leave my dog alone, without food or water. I paid everything; I didn’t rest a second on the room bed.
My husband and I were taking a long trip to visit family and I was looking for a place to stay one night to break up the drive. I stumbled onto Starved Rock Lodge and decided to give it a try. The Lodge is rustic and quaint and is right in the middle of the state park with lots of hiking trails, walking trails and things to see in a beautiful setting. Our room was very rustic and basic - there was no refrigerator in the room so I had to give my medication to the front desk to hold for me overnight, which they did. All of the staff were very nice but not overly friendly. They answered any questions we had but did not go out of their way to offer suggestions. We ate dinner in the lodge and the prices were what we would expect for a touristy place. As with any tourist location there are no shortages of gift shops ready to sell you all kinds of items like clothing, food and memorabilia.…
I loved this park an their is no charge. The hiking an walking an seeing caverns an formation it’s just nature great. I had a picnic, an a great day. I loved it but the trolley , the boats for the tour of the Illinois river not working because of Covid, this guarantee that I will return to see all of it.
We booked a four night stay in May 2022 and were assigned Room 125. It was comfortble enough, but the lighting was very very dim. You would not want to try to read for very long or do any kind of task! You wouldn't use such low wattage light bulbs at home! On the third morning of our stay we were awakened very early by noises in the hallway. It happens that Room 125 is next to a conference room, and the lodge was setting up a breakfast buffet in the hallway outside the conference room. I complained at the front desk and told the attendant that we were going to be checking out and would not stay for our last night. Why were we given a room so close to early morning activity when we had booked for several days? Poor planning on their part. No refund was forthcoming. Up to that morning we had enjoyed ourselves.…
Was very happy with the room I had reserved. (room 311). Had a bay type window that looked toward the river. At least it was a nice view of trees. {Plenty of room to move around with a table and chairs, desk, and king size bed. Room was well maintained. The food prices were a little pricey so we did not eat there. Also no food available until 8am. Another nice thing is the trails start right there so you don't have to drive to get them. Highly recommend this place.
This was our first visit to Starved Rock Lodge and it did not disappoint. We stayed in the hotel section of the lodge and our room was on the 2nd floor and very comfortable. One needs to remember the lodge was built over 80 years ago, so the rooms are on the smallish side and the furnishings are “lodge type” such as log tables and chairs. With that being said, they have all modern conveniences. TV, Wi-Fi, USB ports, etc. our room was clean and everything was in working order. Everyone we encountered was friendly. The pool is huge and the perfect temperature. We enjoyed the hot tub after a full day of hiking! The trails are just gorgeous. Breath taking views! We had several meals in the main dining room, one being a steak dinner. All meals were great with super service. Reasonable prices. The Back Door Lounge is a great place to relax. Order a drink and head outside on the huge deck. Watch for eagles! It appeared that all of the staff were working really hard to make our stay enjoyable. We will definitely return to The Starved Rock Lodge and I highly recommend!…
Each Easter weekend, our family meets at the Lodge for a few days. We have been doing this for at least 33 years. The lodge is beautiful, pool always nice, walking trails awesome. The back door lounge is also always nice, this trip understaffed, but those working it did their best to take care of our needs. We were there Friday early evening and had a really pleasant young man who did a great job. Another, his first day on the job bussing tables was also great... saw another busser who was equally terrific. Housekeeping was also lovely, not entering our rooms, but making sure we had all that we needed. However, the best spot in the lodge is the Cafe, and I give credit to Bobette for that. She respectfully supported a few new employees, assisting them when they needed help, then cooked and brought out our sandwiches, which were really tasty. She was there every day, including Easter Sunday. She needs a raise! The front desk has rarely been ideal. Why? This is the only reason for only 4 stars.…
I took a mini-vacation for two days and one night. I stayed in the hotel wing for one night. The grounds are fantastic and the hiking trails are well marked and reasonably well kept up. The hotel was reasonably priced, but both the hotel and the restaurant need some upgrades. The hotel room bed was lumpy. It was also very hot despite the fact that the in-room heating/AC unit was off. Finally I realized that there was a separate thermostat and that the source of heat seemed to be under the bed (which was weird). I lowered the thermostat setting and within 30 minutes I was comfortable. Other than that, the room was fine. But the bathroom sink was extremely low. I ate dinner and then breakfast at the restaurant. Dinner was fine, although nothing to jump up and down about. I ordered half a rack of BBQ baby back ribs, which were tasty but tough. They were definitely not slow cooked, but were probably par-boiled and then barbecued for a short time. Breakfast the next day was a big disappointment. I ordered Eggs Benedict, but the sauce was almost tasteless the english muffin seemed to be stale, and the Canadian bacon was awful. I also ordered tea, which came in a tiny pot, along with a tiny cup. I paid Starbucks prices for the tea, which was another disappointment. Overall, Starved Rock Lodge and Hotel/Restaurant is a beautiful place, and they do many things right (mostly outdoors). But the lodging and food were sub-par.…
