The Makanda Inn provides refined, distinctively luxurious lodgings hidden deep in the Shawnee National Forest next door to Giant City State Park and down the street from the Makanda Boardwalk. Savor unique, out of the ordinary breakfast and dinners featuring local organic ingredients, explore the natural landscapes, and rejuvenate in one of our king beds. The tranquility you will experience here, rivals locations far more remote. Sounds of nature, rarely interrupted, change with the seasons. From the near silence in winter to the symphony of creatures celebrating the warmth of summer. We have five guest suites in the main lodge and three private cottages (two one bedroom units and one two-bedroom unit). Suite has a refrigerator & coffee maker. One bedroom cottages have an equipped kitchenette which includes: a two burner electric stove, sink, refrigerator, coffee maker, and microwave. West End Cottage has a full-size, well-equipped kitchen. Local micro-roasted coffee is supplied freshly ground in your suite and cottages. Our West End Cottage is pet friendly. Sorry no guests under 13.

My husband & I spent a 3 day weekend for our 25th anniversary. It was their first weekend back to serving breakfast (outside only) during this pandemic. We have a lot of high-risk people in our lives and it was very important to be able to get away safely. If we were in the building (aside from our room, of course), we had to wear a mask. The owners, also, wore a mask. I did notice some people not wearing a mask from time to time walking downstairs, but for the most part, everyone was masked. We felt safe the entire time between masks, sanitizer, and social distancing.
They do a really good job of giving you that B&B feel, but also, letting you have privacy. The place was decorated really nice and was very clean. I am a germaphobe and I never felt like something wasn't cleaned well.
The breakfast in the morning was great! The 3 tables were spaced well. The morning breakfasts were at 9 am, so we didn't feel the pressure of waking up too early. We had waffles with ice cream, local strawberries made into a syrup, and whipped cream. This was my favorite! It was so good. Then, we had a veggie frittata and a baked pear with cinnamon and KY honey. This was, also, delicious. Finally, we had organic yogurt with fresh blueberries, eggs, sausage, and croissant french toast with elderberry syrup. They made wonderful food! Every morning we would talk with the other guests about where we were all from and exchanged ideas of things to do. It was nice.
The room was perfect. It was very clean and quiet. The bedding and towels were so soft and comfortable. I have never felt such soft towels before. We had locally roasted coffee in our room. It was so good. The showere had a. in our room along with a nice card.
All in all, this was a great stay. We would highly recommend staying here. They do a great job!

We are so happy to be able to serve breakfast again to our B & B Inn guests here :-) We have truly missed everyone enjoying our food and chatting with each other over breakfast. Thanks so much, for describing all of yours and we are happy you had a favorite! We are also glad that you felt safe in our environment here. The Inn is very spacious both indoors and out. We will continue to follow all recommended guidelines for our guests and ourselves. We are thankful that the weather permits everyone the opportunity to enjoy all of our great outdoor spaces as much as possible too! Thank you so much for your 5* recommendation! We wish you many more Anniversary's and hope to see you both again sometime :-)

Our third trip to Makanda Inn and cottages from the east coast and we continue to be impressed. The experience not only meets the expectations from past visits but we continue to be surprised with the improvements. It is hard to find a place that can not only meet your expectations but improve on an already fantastic experience. The rooms are as perfect as the day we first stayed and the management has always been very attentive and a true champion of local adventures. Don’t let the ECO friendly aspect of this resort scare you, it is truly a first class adventure and well worth a visit no matter how far you travel. Rooms are spotless, well stocked and comfortable. Well beyond our expectations. We look forward to many more opportunities to visit.

Our stay at Makanda Inn & Cottages was top notch. Nervous about travel during this pandemic, but really needing to get away, booking a cottage was perfect. Tucked into the hill with beautiful surroundings, the cabin was truly a retreat. The clear policy regarding check-in to allow for deep cleaning and the perfect condition of the cabin upon arrival alleviated any fears. The managers were very responsive to email and phone inquiries, as well as assisting with both technological and restocking requests once on property. Finally, the Welcome Book provided excellent suggestions for places to visit and eat. We'll be back!

We stayed for a 3 day weekend in August 2022. Everything was perfect. The kitchen in the room was very helpful. We booked the West End cottage for a family of 4 with parents and college age kids (2 separate bedrooms and bathrooms with separate kitchen and living room). So close to Giant City State Park for hiking, as well as other Shawnee Forest locations. We visited Pomona Natural Bridge, Ferne Clyffe state park, tunnel hill trail (brought our bikes with us), Heron Pond, local orchards for peaches, and Bald Knob Cross. My son is very into Dungeons and Dragons game and there in an amazing park in Carbondale with that theming. The kids wanted to see a just released movie, and nearby Carbondale has theaters. We ate breakfast one morning at the inn. (Inn host Kyle is a great cook). We also ate dinner one night at Quattro's Pizza by the SIU campus in Carbondale (very good pizza) and the other night at the dining room at Giant City State Park Lodge--great friend chicken. The Inn hosts Jackie and Kyle were amazing. Very friendly and helpful. Our college age kids were somewhat surprised no WiFi in cottage since most places we stay have it, but they enjoyed going to the main Inn to work on their class homework. It was very comfortable and nice area for studying in the main Inn building. They also enjoyed the ice cream at a shop on the Makanda Boardwalk. We would definitely stay again.

The rooms are wonderful and well appointed, the common areas are welcoming, but what elevates the experience at the Makanda Inn is the personal touch and attention of the proprietor, Greg! We flew in from Connecticut and drove to Southern Illinois to meet-up with family and could not have asked for a better location to enjoy all that Shawnee National Forest and Carbondale has to offer. Greg also helped us map out a scenic hike. The food is fabulous, natural, and showcases local vendors (especially the coffee)! We hope for a return visit! Dan & Emily

This was a great 2-night stay! We were in the main lodge, which is kind of a “sophisticated rustic” with woods and other materials used in unique and craftsmanlike ways. The proprietor is quite personable and produced exceptional breakfasts. There was real in-room coffee, not a Keurig. The sheets were a heavy, silky, high thread count cotton, and the terry towels were thick and luxurious. This place is well maintained, the surroundings are woodsy and serene and the area has a great deal of charm including a collection of small businesses that appear to be holdovers from the hippie era. We expect to return for another stay.

This was my first trip to Southern IL, and Makanda Inn & Suites Indigo Cottage was absolutely perfect. The property is absolutely gorgeous and the accommodations are superb. Malcolm and Lorraine were amazing hosts! Ending the days with them was lovely, whether at the bar or sipping drinks by the Inn fireplace. You can definitely tell they really care about your experience and the property and cottage were so quaint and lovely. They're located very close to SIU so you can still get a variety of dining experiences, right off the wine trail, and extremely close to Giant City State Park for beautiful hiking. Highly recommended staying there!!

As a surprise trip planned entirely by my husband, Makanda Inn & Cottages was a relaxing stay. Loraine & Malcolm made us feel at home with the handwritten anniversary card and cupcakes. Our cottage was clean adorned with handmade soap and local coffee beans. The kitchen was stocked with everything we needed to cook on the grill our anniversary steaks. The upstairs deck was just right for morning coffee and the downstairs deck was where we enjoyed supper. Wonderful relaxing stay!

Unique stay, comfy beds & beautiful wooded surroundings. We stayed in a cottage, could have been cleaner & we went for breakfast & only got served a tiny bowl of yogurt. We watched while others were served a full breakfast. It clearly stated on the website breakfast was for ALL guests. We won’t be back

This was a perfect location for an extended weekend for our “date” weekend.

The Makanda Inn is positioned perfectly to explore the area. We visited Von Jakob, Blue Sky, Owl Creek vineyards. We hiked a couple of trails in Giant City. We ate at Fork & Vine (dinner) and Giant City Lodge (breakfast), as well as having breakfast and a special dinner at the Inn. We also shopped at the Makanda Boardwalk and explored the gardens behind the boardwalk.

We stayed in the Indigo Cottage and it was very romantic. We enjoyed the patios as well as the privacy of our location. The grounds on the property were relaxing and inviting. We absolutely enjoyed our time here and would love to visit again. Also, Jackie and Kyle were just wonderful and welcoming throughout the entire stay! We recommend purchasing the breakfast and dinner from the Inn! Kyle is an awesome cook and Jackie ensured we were well taken care of during our meal.

If we are planning a visit to this area, definitely stay here!
