We stayed for a 3 day weekend in August 2022. Everything was perfect. The kitchen in the room was very helpful. We booked the West End cottage for a family of 4 with parents and college age kids (2 separate bedrooms and bathrooms with separate kitchen and living room). So close to Giant City State Park for hiking, as well as other Shawnee Forest locations. We visited Pomona Natural Bridge, Ferne Clyffe state park, tunnel hill trail (brought our bikes with us), Heron Pond, local orchards for peaches, and Bald Knob Cross. My son is very into Dungeons and Dragons game and there in an amazing park in Carbondale with that theming. The kids wanted to see a just released movie, and nearby Carbondale has theaters. We ate breakfast one morning at the inn. (Inn host Kyle is a great cook). We also ate dinner one night at Quattro's Pizza by the SIU campus in Carbondale (very good pizza) and the other night at the dining room at Giant City State Park Lodge--great friend chicken. The Inn hosts Jackie and Kyle were amazing. Very friendly and helpful. Our college age kids were somewhat surprised no WiFi in cottage since most places we stay have it, but they enjoyed going to the main Inn to work on their class homework. It was very comfortable and nice area for studying in the main Inn building. They also enjoyed the ice cream at a shop on the Makanda Boardwalk. We would definitely stay again.…
Three words sum up our stay: Exquisite, Exceptional, Excellent! The entries Inn and grounds are gorgeous and very calming. Your stress effortly escapes as you check-in. Jackie and Kyle are gracious and accommodating hosts. The food and service is outstanding! Highly recommended for any time you need to get away and forget all your cares for a little while. Just off the beaten path but well worth the journey!
This was a perfect location for an extended weekend for our “date” weekend. The Makanda Inn is positioned perfectly to explore the area. We visited Von Jakob, Blue Sky, Owl Creek vineyards. We hiked a couple of trails in Giant City. We ate at Fork & Vine (dinner) and Giant City Lodge (breakfast), as well as having breakfast and a special dinner at the Inn. We also shopped at the Makanda Boardwalk and explored the gardens behind the boardwalk. We stayed in the Indigo Cottage and it was very romantic. We enjoyed the patios as well as the privacy of our location. The grounds on the property were relaxing and inviting. We absolutely enjoyed our time here and would love to visit again. Also, Jackie and Kyle were just wonderful and welcoming throughout the entire stay! We recommend purchasing the breakfast and dinner from the Inn! Kyle is an awesome cook and Jackie ensured we were well taken care of during our meal. If we are planning a visit to this area, definitely stay here!…
The rooms are wonderful and well appointed, the common areas are welcoming, but what elevates the experience at the Makanda Inn is the personal touch and attention of the proprietor, Greg! We flew in from Connecticut and drove to Southern Illinois to meet-up with family and could not have asked for a better location to enjoy all that Shawnee National Forest and Carbondale has to offer. Greg also helped us map out a scenic hike. The food is fabulous, natural, and showcases local vendors (especially the coffee)! We hope for a return visit! Dan & Emily
(Already reviewed on google but wanted to add my two cents to trip advisor as well because our stay way magical!!) My fiancé and I had an amazing weekend getaway to the Makanda Inn. We stayed in the Indigo Cottage and it was a wonderful experience. Such a cute and cozy feel, I genuinely loved how the cottage was decorated. Makanda is pretty far from home but we made the trip out specifically to come here and I’m SO glad we did. Everything from the hospitality of the staff, the soaking tub, the beautiful scenery, the breakfast (definitely add breakfast if you’re staying in the cottage it’s worth it) made our stay incredible. I wouldn’t change a single thing about this unique property and we will 100% be returning in the future!!!
We have stayed here every year when we visit family in the area. Its a terrific place. The rooms including the bed and pillows are very comfortable. The inn itself is cozy and the breakfast/ bar/ restaurant has great food. The innkeepers are attentive. All in all, there are no complaints! Definitely stay here if in the area of Carbondale.
We recently stayed in the Sienna Cottage and had a wonderful time! To rip off the technology-Band-Aid, I must warn everyone that there is ZERO phone signal out here in the boonies. So don’t come out visiting thinking you’re going to stream Netflix or do some Candy Crush. The main building (and its 4 bedrooms) has Wi-Fi, but the cottages do not, so bring a good book or two! Our Sienna cottage (and surrounding area) was clean and well maintained with two exterior sitting areas with tables and chairs. One sitting space was near a fire pit and the second space was on a private second-story patio. I preferred the second story due to the lovely view of the woods and small streams within. The interior of the cottage seemed small but was laid out in such a way that the space felt larger than it should have. The bed was backwards (which was odd) but when you opened the curtains and saw the trees outside the bedroom window, it made a lot of sense. There’s a curved staircase that leads downstairs to a small kitchenette and living area with a little TV, a full couch, and table with chairs. It was homely and yet woodsy all the same. We loved our little cottage. There are two downsides we noticed. The first involved the trains that pass nearby. Luckily, they don’t seem to toot their train horns as they come through town, and you can barely hear the trains while you’re indoors, but if you’re sitting outside when one comes through, the whine of their brakes can be a bit ear-shattering. The second was breakfast is not included with the cottage rentals. If you stay in one of the 4 bedrooms at the main inn, breakfast is part of the packaged deal, but for the 4 bedrooms located outside the main building (which are all maybe 30-60 seconds of walking away from the main building) breakfast is an added-on expense. Admittedly, the cottages have their own kitchenette so you can cook, but the guests who do not pay out for breakfast are honest-to-God missing out on one of the best treasures this place is hiding: Chef Kyle. Kyle is one of the innkeepers. He’s a down-to-Earth guy, funny and likeable, and a fantastic cook. Not only will Kyle be making you the best breakfast you’ve ever had – hands down - but he’ll even whip up some fierce dinner menus in case you don’t want to travel the 30 minutes out of town for some grub. I highly recommend you check that option out!…
What a beautiful property and top notch service! Sharon was so pleasant and accommodating. The food was AMAZING!! The bed was so comfy and I loved the gorgeous stone walk in shower. There are small walking trails on the property and the small downtown has some cute little shops that are about about a 10 mins walk away. I highly recommend Makanda!
We spent two nights in Suite number two. We were a little hesitant at first due to the price but it was worth every penny. It was extremely clean and comfortable and had everything we needed for our two day day. Greg made us a delicious, beautifully presented breakfast and was a great host. There were plenty of wineries and hiking trails to explore. We finished our two day stay with a delicious dinner at Giant City Lodge. We enjoyed the history of the lodge. Since I am a bit particular about accommodations, we will certainly stay at Makanda Inn and Cottages when we come back for a bit of a longer stay. Thanks, Tim & Janet Joy
We stayed at the Makanda Inn recently and had a great time! We have been there before and it never disappoints. From the Inn Keepers, the accommodations, excellent breakfast, and just the relaxing atmosphere it is by far one of our all-time favorite places to stay. The surrounding areas with Giant City State Park (great fried chicken) and the Shawnee National Forest are so beautiful and picturesque that you can't wait to get out and experience it. Also, it's right off the Southern Illinois Wine Trail for those that enjoy their wine. We highly recommend it!
