A note from The Deer Path Inn

#1 of 2 hotels in Lake Forest
Travelers' Choice
For over 90 years, the Deer Path Inn has set the standard for exceptional dining and hotel accommodations on Chicago's North Shore. Styled after a 15th century English manor house, the inn's thick oak beams and warm stucco walls have long been a landmark of hospitality and local charm in the Lake Forest community. Now, having completed a true floor-to-ceiling renaissance, we have brought the finest 21st century amenities to our historic Lake Forest inn, while preserving all the romantic character of its classic English architecture. We believe you'll find the unique combination of new amenities and Old World charm and service nothing short of brilliant.

Hotel's Favorite
This hotel is an absolute winner. The hotel itself is lovely. The rooms are airy with new beautiful bathrooms, the beds amazingly comfortable. Traveling during the time of covid is stressful and the Deer Path Inn's procedures are fantastic and incredibly reassuring. Everything was sanitized, marked as such, spotless and felt and smelled clean without any chemical smell. The most germ-phobic person could stay here with ease. The staff is extraordinary, managing to maintain social distance while simultaneously giving individualized and thoughtful "white-glove" service. We will definitely be back.

We had a fantastic night away from home. The staff was welcoming and went out of their way to make us feel special. The small details set this hotel apart. Jay the assistant innkeeper and Ryan could not have been any more attentive to our needs. Thank you and we will return.

I called and made appointment and spoke to someone at 10:56am. Mandy told us they have no reservations for us. Mandy said they never take any high tea reservations for the day of at all. They go through dietary restrictions and other information with the party ahead. I told her I should have taken the name of the woman that took our information. The male staffer said he would check to see if they had enough tea sandwiches and let us know. They were able to accommodate us last minute and gave us some bottled waters in the interim while they set us up a table ahead. The squirrel with the mask in the front entry is a tribute to the squirrel that used to come here to get some snacks. We got a bit of Prosecco, some berry kisses tea, chocolate cream truffles and the black currant. Hicham is waiting on us. Our tea set is Wedgewood wild strawberry. The poppy seed scone was okay, a bit dry and lacks in flavor. The lemon curd, Devonshire cream (clotted cream) and the berry preserve were all good. The black currant and berry are both nice teas. The chocolate truffle tea is decent. The roast beef with the horseradish and watercress is okay. The shrimp and taragon lemon dressing in a puff. The chicken herb salad with slivered almond is a decent size and quite flavorful and yummy. The roasted tomato quiche is good, crust is a bit dry, but has a nice buttery flavor to it too. The goat cheese and asparagus quiche was also okay, same dry crust. The Victoria sponge was decent, some preserve inside the sponge. The chocolate mousse cup was quite tasty. Fruit custard tart was also good. The opera cake has a nice slightly crunchy bottom layer, some hints of coffee, it’s good. The citrus cheesecake wasn’t my thing. They do give you a sample of each of hot teas. My husband realized when they gave us a sample of each of our teas that he got the cherry fig instead of his chocolate truffle. The chocolate truffle is nice, had a bit of coconut in it as well. $165 for 3 of us after tax. Food was okay. Service was good.

My friend and I wanted to celebrate our vaccinated status and just plain get out and have fun, so we came to the Deer Path Inn for afternoon tea. We had wanted to make this outing for some time, but it got postponed with the shutdown and all. We arrived punctually at our seating time, but had to wait literally a few minutes. This was not a problem. We were seated in the Garden Room, amid many strategically placed plants, and with a view out into the lovely courtyard garden. Service was prompt and courteous. Our waiter poured us each a flute of prosecco, and the fun began. I had darjeeling blend tea and it was delicious. We got our tiered stands of sweets and savories. My friend had the gluten free option and pronounced it good. My favorite things were the salmon on pumpernickel and the roast beef sandwich, along with the lemon poppy seed scone topped with raspberry jam and Devonshire cream. The quiches were also tasty. Attention is paid to quality of the food as well as presentation, which is very important in tea service. We had a leisurely time, savoring every bit of the experience, and enjoying the food, the setting, the atmosphere, everything. Afterwards, we walked around and took a few photos. Everyone on the staff made us feel welcome in every way.
