In these tough COVID times we looked for an escape abd what a great decision was to stay at this resort.

Covid: Guests do not need to wear masks around the island, only in the main buffet area. Staff is always with a mask.

Location: Veligandu sits on an astonishing island, 20 mins away from Male with a sea plane (330 USD per person). Unlike many resorts in the Maldives, this one sits on a vast clean area with a huge amount of crystal clear turquoise water, a real joy for the eyes. The reef, with a large variety of aquatic life, sits beyond it.

The resort itself isn't big. Which is a plus in my view. You will sometime feel it's just you and your partner, I loved it. Walking around the island will take you no more than 20 mins.

Service: This was our second time in the Maldives, and the service quality here stays loyal to the high standards Maldivians offer, and even taking it to another level. Rifau, our personal concierge, did above and beyond for us. The waiters in the buffet, the bartenders, the housekeeping staff, all welcomed us with a smile and a small talk. Customer service is really embedded into their DNA, which is phenomenal.

Room: We stayed in the sunset water villa and waking up every morning to the sights and sounds of the Indian ocean was mesmerizing. Watching the sunset in the balcony was even better, these are one of the best sunsets available on this planet.

Food: The buffet variety was OK. I do understand the reasons with Covid around and the resort itself was not at full capacity. Food quality was between 3.5-5 stars. Some were good, some were excellent, especially the 5 star deserts.

The a la carte restaurant was closed due to Covid but we did get a dinner on the beach, which was excellent.

Activities: You can do a lot in Valigandu, from snorkeling to taking a private boat to a remote island, everything felt optional, with no rush to book anything. My guess that most guests just enjoyed relaxing in the big (mostly empty) pool, taking a dive or just eating and drinking.

SPA: We did the couple's therapy (around 220 USD for 2 persons for 90 mins) and it was really good.

Price per value: I did a lot of research, this is one of the best resorts in the Maldives for the value you get.

Overall: I thing the high ratings in TA, Booking and Google are well worth it. Hopefully we can come back again without the presence of Covid.

If you hesitate to choose this place, just book it!
I had a lot of expectation before coming and my stay was even better than expected...

This journey starts in a private lounge of Malé aiport where you will take you seaplane flight to Veligandu ; you will be welcomed personally with a drink and your island host will explain you everything about your stay.

Our room (Sunset Overwater Jacuzzi Villa) worth its price : it is spacious, clean, well-equipped and the view is just amazing ; you can swim directly from the room terrace into the lagoon and spot fishes and sharks.

The buffet restaurant offers a large selection of different dishes (salads, european, asian, indian, grill, meat, fish, vegetarian...there is for everybody's taste), all really good ; the A La Carte restaurant offers you beautiful and quality plates that you can enjoy watching the sunset.
The bar gives you a large choice of drinks and snacks that you can enjoy at the bar, on the beach or the swimming pool.

Regarding the activities, the main thing to do is swimming ; the water is crystal clear, beaches are stunning and it is a paradise for snorkelling : the reef is full of colourful fishes and you can ever swim with small sharks and turtle if you are lucky. I advise to do at least once snorkelling excursion as well to spot even more (manta).
The facilities are all good, you can enjoy Fitness, Spa, Games and even do a photo shoot with the island photographer.
You can also enjoy some entertainment evenings at Thundi bar every day (live music, parties, Maldivian dance).

Last but not least, the staff is amazing ; all really nice, welcoming, friendly and helpful !

This trip was worth every euro that I have paid for it, this was one of my best trip.

Veligandu is a stunningly beautiful resort, a 20 minute Sea Plane ride from Male. The secluded location, lovely beaches and small size of the island make this an ideal choice for a relaxing holiday. Our water villa faced the sunset, was well equipped and provided direct access to the lagoon which was populated by a large range of fish and reef sharks.
The Athiri beach bar was less than 100 metres away along the boardwalk and provided a good selection of drinks both in the All Inclusive package and other premium brands at additional cost. This was the quieter of the 2 bars, but was an excellent place to watch the sunset. The beach was usually nearly empty, but had a good selection of beds and hammocks. It became our favourite as it often felt like our own private beach.
The larger beach / sand bar at the other end of the island, a full 500 metres away, is stunning and was served by the main Thundi bar. Although this was more popular with other guests, it had more than enough sun beds and umbrellas and would never be crowded because of its size, spacing of umbrellas and relatively small number of guests on the island. The larger Thundi bar had a wide variety of drinks and also hosted the nightly laid back entertainment. It was well laid out with a variety of indoor and outdoor seating of various shapes and sizes. The Dhonveli main restaurant served all meals in a buffet style, but the range and quality of the food was excellent. All Inclusive guests were also entitled to 2 visits to the Madivaru a la carte restaurant from a relatively small menu. There was a more extensive a la carte menu which was a little pricey. The only slightly irritating aspect was to be charged $15 each to eat on the beach there rather than inside. Something we were not told until we were sat on the beach.
The All Inclusive package was quite extensive and included decent quality wines, beers, cocktails and local spirits. Additional premium brands were available at extra cost, but were not particularly expensive for this part of the world, and were discounted for All Inclusive guests. The Thundi bar also provided a good range of snacks available all day and free to All Inclusive guests.
The resort gym was fairly small but adequately equipped, with decent equipment. The Spa was a particular favourite for my wife who was impressed by the quality of the massages and friendly staff. Overall this is a lovely resort where we had a fantastic holiday in a great location, we will return again

Dear snelld885, Greetings & Blessings from Veligandu Island Resort & Spa! Warm Gratitude for the high ratings and taking your valuable time to jot down an alluring, detailed review about your recent stay with us. Our little paradise is indeed a small island completely secluded with a serene atmosphere and the cozy Sunset Jacuzzi Water Villas surely provides the best view of the ablaze sunset that one could go out of this world into a dreamy land, as mesmerizing it is, our house reef also does the wonders of taking our guest into a completely different world of tranquility. We are so glad that you were able to sense these unique experiences, moreover relished gawking at the breathtaking sunsets and our abundant reef teeming with arrays of colorful fishes, reef sharks, and other marine creatures. We are thrilled to perceive that our foods served at both restaurants and the snacks available at the bar had tantalized your taste-buds. Our friendly Duniya Spa team is more than happy to provide quality massages to your wife with a genuine smile at all times. It is a great pleasure to know that our selection of beds and hammocks at our beach became your favorite and that you felt like it is your own private beach, one of the reasons we are being labeled as The Secluded Heaven. It is always a great feeling to perceive that our guest's anecdote at our little paradise was perfect with enticing moments of bliss to treasure for a lifetime. We arrived to Veligandu after a long, long journey from the states. I was slightly disappointed we had to wait over 2 hours to be transferred to the island after traveling for over 24 hours, but understand it makes sense to wait to fill the transfers. Once we got to our room, as many reviews state, we were overwhelmed by how beautiful the room was set up - decorations, champagne and of course, the over water bungalow view just cannot be beat. We were only here for the first 4 nights of our honeymoon and my husband got a stomach bug on our 2nd day so we unfortunately did not get to make the most out of our trip. He is a HUGE diver and since his last dive was last Christmas, he had to do a refresher shore dive before he could do a boat dive. Then his stomach bug kicked in so he couldn't do the boat dive before he left which was a big let down. His main motivation to go to the Maldives was to dive so that was a bummer. The staff was incredibly friendly and there was always something to do if you wanted an activity. It was great being able to put on a mask and snorkel and see beautiful fish right off of our bungalow. I would recommend bringing your own mask and snorkel if you own and can fit in your luggage as they do charge for renting. The sand off of the bungalow was a little rocky, so we used the water shoes that we brought, but it is definitely walkable if that does not bug you. They also offer flippers to rent as well. Overall, the resort is very nice, but I do agree with some other reviews that some areas are a bit dated (the gym, front desk area, spa reception mainly). I would love to try going at a different time of year for a week instead of 4 nights as we got at some rainy weather and it is much pricier over the holidays, but it was still an amazing start to our honeymoon despite my complaints and one we will never forget! Really, any of the resorts in the Maldives will be exceptional as it is so beautiful there! I would recommend Veligandu as long as you aren't looking for a brand new resort and don't stay in the bungalow over the sewage :) !

Dear Beckabes, Sunny greetings from Veligandu Island Resort & Spa! Warm gratitude for the valuable feedback and selecting Veligandu for your stay in the Republic of Maldives. I sincerely apologize for being unable to meet your expectations. We will take your feedback into serious consideration. Our resort have been in operation for the past 35 years since 1984, henceforth we always maintain and renovate our facilities frequently. last summer all guest villas has been upgraded with new furniture, touch up and lighting, Main Bar with new furniture, lighting etc… arrival lounge and new a la Carte Restaurant. We plan to upgrade our Reception and some other facilities during next Summer. It is very unfortunate and we are sorry that your husband was unable to do a dive during his visit to the Republic of Maldives this time. Our Dive Center and Water sports Center are operated by the qualified well known Ocean Dive, hence they manage the activities and set best rates for all Water sports activities, diving and gears. Once again sincere apologies for the inconvenience and for being unable to reach your expectations on your visit to our exquisite island this time. We will be honored to satisfy you with few new facilities and offerings on your next visit to our little paradise. Looking forward to welcome you back. Forevermore the secluded island! Warm Regards,

Wow, what a place! Pure paradise......
From the moment we arrived we were made to feel very special and very welcome.
We had sunset jacuzzi water villa 166. The room was lovely, very clean, nicely decorated and had an amazing jacuzzi overlooking the beautiful blue ocean. Well stocked mini bar in room which is refilled daily, only one chocolate bar a day provided though, would have been nice to have one each.
We went AI+, the buffet restaurant served plenty of quality food with a wide variety of choice and cooking stations, also 24hr snacks in bar which we found limited on AI+. The drinks were all good & very strong and hubby enjoyed the Lion beer.
Snorkelling on the reef was amazing, saw plenty of different fish.
We did kayaking & paddle boarding also, was great fun. We went on the sunset dolphin cruise, trip was lovely but unfortunately the dolphins were in hiding!
Staff were all extremely friendly and nothing was too much trouble.
We WILL definitely be returning to this beautiful paradise island...

Choosing a resort at the Maldives for the very first time is tough, however, we were extremely happy & satisfied with our choice of Veligandu for our vacation in the Maldives. The resort was just perfect! The brilliant views, white pilllowy powder soft sand, the turquoise seas, the magnificent house reef, the laid back vibe, the warm friendly staff and the variety of excursions offered, all deserve a special mention. The island is very well maintained & has a lush green garden. The effort that the ground staff puts into cleaning the gardens, the beaches and the general maintenance definitely shows. All the guests have an island host assigned to them, upon arrival. Our island host- Hussain, was reachable at all times and ensured that our vacation and excursions exceeded our expectations and ensured that our time here was a smooth and well executed one. Each room has a room attendant and our room attendant, Faris kept our overwater villa sparkling clean at all times. The Dhonveli restaurant and Thundi bar along with staff members Alex, Naail, both of the Abdullahs, Hussain, Mary, Sunil, Ravi, Chef Roshan and his team all kept us well fed, served us our food with love and were always accommodating of any specific food related requests that we had. Unfortunately, the only black spot among all of these wonderful people was Naeem at Dhonveli restaurant who discouraged us and did not rest till he cancelled our pool dinner.
Given the pandemic situation, the resort has adequate measures in place- such as sanitizers all through the island, sanitization of the tables, loungers etc. after each use by the guests, luggage sanitization upon arrival, masks worn by every staff member at all times, sanitization of high touch areas, members of the staff serving food at the buffet so as to ensure the spoons and ladles were not handled by every guest and many more. All of the staff at Veligandu have been there for a long time and every one of them that we spoke to, were content and very happy with their jobs and this was evident in their passion for their island. All in all, Veligandu is a beautiful resort with warm, friendly and excellent staff who ensured our stay there was an unforgettable one. It is easy to see why there are so many repeat guests, here and we will also definitely be one of them, in the future!

An excellent choice for a vacation in the Maldives. I was blown away by the beauty of this place in the first hour after arriving. Everything was perfect: lagoon with corals where you can snorkel directly from the pristine whitish sand beach. There is also at the end of the island, a strip of white beach with water access from both sides which looks awesome. Small palm forest and garden in the middle of the island, including incline palm trees that look so beautiful. Infiniti pool, in the all-inclusive price, besides the meals, drinks, and cocktails there are included as well a lot of interesting daily trips, like sunset cruise with dolphins, snorkel with the whale - shark, go night fishing, etc. there is a jacuzzi in all water villas. la carte restaurant for special days. massage & spa center. Since the moment you arrive, you are treated like a VIP by all staff members, who are very friendly and helpful in anything requested. I would like to appreciate the chef of restaurants with the delicious foods, and the stuff of restaurants, and dear Mimi our direct receptor whose smile didn't disappear from their face.

This was our second visit to Veligandu and special as we were celebrating our 40th Wedding Anniversay. We were greeted by the staff with warmth and like old friends. We stayed in a Sunset Jacuzzi Water Villa which had been updated and was spotlessly clean. Every member of the Veligandu team wore a mask and there were hand sanitizers at all public places and our temperature was checked every morning. During these unusual times of Covid-19 we felt extemely safe staying in Veligandu with all the precautions they had taken to look after their guests. In fact, we feel there couldnt be anywhere safer to take a holiday than in this beautiful, tropical paradise.
Rifau, was our Island Host and he did everything he could to help us and if we had any issues, he speedily resolved them. He had arranged a welcome back cake along with a bottle of bubbly and also a wedding anniversary cake and more bubbly.
In the restaurant we were well taken care of by Akram and Abdullah H. The food was a delight, I especially enjoyed the fresh fruit, vegetables and fish. We dined out on the beach several times which was magical.
We spent most evenings in the newly refurbished Thudi Bar which had a chic Maldivian vibe. We enjoyed cocktails and musical evenings in the Thudi Bar and Nafees made us two little boats carved from the palm trees to take home for our grandchildren.
We met some wonderful coupes staying on the island and enjoyed a great night fishing trip where we all managed to catch a fish. My husband and another holiday friend also had a great time on the big game fishing trip where he caught a huge Wahu which was shared in the restaurant.
We can't recommend this isalnd highly enough. In fact, we go as far to say, that this was the best holiday we have every enjoyed and look forward to going back.

We have stayed at Veligandu previously, approximately 8 years ago and felt the need to return for what we thought would be one last time - the jury is out on that decision!

The island is, if it is possible, even better than it was before. Bearing in mind the huge effort it takes to keep this island clean, maintained, the beaches free pristine is all thanks to the team at Veligandu who work tirelessly and with a smile to bring paradise to the few who stay here.

The guest/staff ratio is high and this shows in the excellent services provided and again with a smile!

Everything is excellent from your own piece of private heaven in your room with such beautiful furnishings and fittings and the services provided by your attendant (ours Saeed) who discreetly looked after us and all excellent. We stayed in a jacuzzi water villa on the sunset side and this is our personal favourite. We stayed over the New Year and had little cards left in the room (and cake!). The All Inclusive Plus has a full sized fridge with bottles of soft drinks, iced tea, cold coffee full bottles of red, white and rose wine replenished daily if required. A lovely Nespresso machine/teas etc and some light snacks (if you felt the need).

The food at the main restaurant was so varied and all excellent quality for every taste. The chefs on hand to provide everything required and fresh fish, pasta and a lovely stir fry station with excellent dishes such as pad thai and tasty seafood concoctions.

Our lovely waiters Ahmed and Zafaan were attentive and soon got to know your likes on drinks.

The bar in the evening pre dinner and after for some music and entertainment gave you the opportunity to mix with other guests if you wish or sit on your own. The bar staff eager to please and so smiley and welcoming - Manju, Yanisa, Adam, Sabina and Pushpa to name a few.

The endless display of sharks, fish, ray which can be seen from your deck is unbelievable. Sadly the coral is quite bleached, but this is I am afraid a sign of the times.

We now find ourselves planning a return visit. Veligandu, you do this so well and the staff are excellent. The General Manager is a fantastic head of the team and you really get the feel this is a passion and not a just a job!

We will be back - thank you!

We are so happy that we have chosen Veligandu for our vacation! We were on top of the world here!
It was our 5th visit to Maldives, but the first to Veligandu. It was a perfect holidays, 12 nights and I wish we could spend more weeks here!

We were upgraded to water villa and it was amazing! Our villa always had a shadow and after our lunch we could sleep on the fresh air without worries about sunburn. The ocean breeze was so refreshing, and fish, sharks, stingrays were right on the edge of the terrace, it’s breathtaking. So private, so cozy and well-equipped, we are in love with water villa 154.

No mosquitoes and any bites here, I have been “eaten” by mosquitoes on the other islands.

The food was delicious and there were so many dishes, a plenty of fresh vegetables, salads, grilled fish and cheese, the Asian food is so tasty, especially the shrimps on the wok station. Also the desserts are out of the world! All those cheesecakes, tarts and cakes, ice cream, tiramisu are sooo delicious and different, so we ate all of them and forgot about calories. The Athiri bar is a perfect place to watch the sunset or for chilling in a mid afternoon, the ocean breeze here is so cool and refreshing. Thanks for the tasty cappuccino and Pina Colada.

We recommend the all inclusive package, it is definitely worth it.

We would like to say thanks to everyone on Veligandu team! Thank you for care and hospitality, we spent a wonderful time here! Thank Ali for looking after us!

All in all, this is a great place to relax, we would never forget all amazing sunsets, sunrises, the sandy beach and bars on the open air, picturesque views and lagoon, the outstanding service and food, accommodation. We recommend this place for your paradise vacation! Hope to visit Veligandu next time!

I personally would say you would not need a jacket or cardigan in the evening….for a February trip . There is shampoo and conditioner in the villas .

Hi We tipped, using euros. They don't really mind what currency, they are very thankful. US dollars is the currency used in the gift shop, so they are definitely acceptable.

What drinks and snacks are in the AI minibar and how often are they refilled?
Answer from Ana Borges
Lisbon District, Portugal
The drinks are very varied, from natural fruit juices, ice tea, to cocktails with alcohol. You can check the menu on the hotel's website. We went with the AI Plus regime and were able to order the drinks we wanted as often as we wanted. As for the snacks you can also check on the hotel's website, but there is also a lot of variety. The employees make an effort to satisfy and please every request of the guest. All drinks and food are of excellent quality!

Hi, when we visited in June, all the courses in the a la carte restaurant were included. We had the steak and it was delicious.
