Decided at the last minute to add another night to our stay in Galena and since the B&B was booked decided to spend the night at this property. All the staff we encountered were very courteous, the room was clean and nicely appointed and you can't beat the location on Main St. Our package included breakfast and a free cocktail at the bar - great value for the price. We will be back!

Just got home from Galena and we stayed at this hotel for one night. The location is great, right on Main Street, and they have a parking garage for guests (no charge) near the hotel. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The beds were comfortable (firm) and the bathroom had nice amenities (shampoo, conditioner, lotion, soap, etc.). We ate breakfast there and it was excellent. We will be back!

The DeSoto House Hotel has been the centerpiece of Galena, Illinois, since it was constructed in 1855. Through good years and bad years, from five stories to three stories, from 225 guest rooms to 55, from two restorations in the 1970s to another in the 1980s, it has survived. My wife and I recall our first visit to the DeSoto in the early 1980s when the building was in a dilapidated condition and we were warned not to carry luggage on the spiral staircase. Today, the DeSoto is the leading overnight accommodation in this popular tourist haven. It offers guest rooms and suites with private baths, three restaurants, two bars, retail shops and an indoor parking garage. This was our fifth visit to the DeSoto. Located at 230 South Main Street, it is the most convenient location in town, an ideal spot for a three-day getaway. We always reserve a Parlor Suite on the second floor with a fireplace and sofa in a comfortable sitting room, a king-size bed in a private bedroom and a large bathroom with tub and shower. Perhaps the free parking garage is the valuable convenience of all. After you exhaust your patience by trying to find a parking place on Main Street or Commerce Street or anywhere in the downtown neighborhood, you'll know what I mean.

This hotel is the perfect location for literally walking out the front doors and onto the main street where all the shops are. The restaurants inside have delicious food, and you can take things to go if you'd rather just relax in your room and eat. The things that bothered me the most though: the wi-fi is horribly slow and is not secured for privacy, there are no fridges/microwaves in the rooms (which for $250 a night that should be something included as they are practically in every cheap hotel), there is a bar across the street so it will get loud at night if you get a room facing Main Street, the walls are paper thin and it sounds like giants are walking on the ceilings if you are below someone, the linens are extremely old. So, parts of it were really great and functional as far as location, but next time I'll stay somewhere else and just drive to park on the main street to do shopping.

The only thing this hotel has going for it is location. The beds are hard, the pillows flat, the electrical outlets on lamps don’t work when lights are turned off( plugging in electronics). They don’t have an ironing board or iron in the room and if you ask for one they bring you one of those tiny ironing boards that sit in a desk. The worst part is if you are on the second floor, you will hear every footstep or item dropped on the floor above you. We must have had an insomniac in room above us as they were walking around all night and the noise from it kept us from sleeping. That and the crappy bed. Will not stay here again if visiting Galena. Lastly, don’t bring a large vehicle if you want to park in the garage as there is a very tight curvy ramp between levels.

To be fair, I had no real problems here, but overall I expected more for the price I paid. Probably you are paying more for location than anything, which I'll admit was very convenient to be right on Main Street in walking distance of everything and able to stop back in the room throughout the day. But speaking of that, the room AC had some type of sensor and didn't run when I left. I'm not sure how it worked as there was no problem with it running all night. But during the day every time I would leave and return it was about 78° in the room and would immediately kick on as soon as I walked back in. A little disappointing when you're stopping in for a break on a hot day.

I know the building has a lot of history, but honestly, it just feels kind of old, and not in a charming way. A lot of areas of the room and common areas are showing age and wear.

The bed was not uncomfortable, but I've slept in much better and softer in far cheaper hotels. I was glad I had brought my own pillow. To be fair there was a note that if you wanted a firmer or softer pillow to call the desk, but the basic pillows already in the room were not great.

We stayed here for a few nights when we went to Chestnut Mountain to ski. The hotel has rich history and the winter rates were very affordable. There is also onsite parking and elevators, which is nice.

Staff was extremely friendly throughout our visit. For the most part, I liked the place, but do think it's looking a bit worn and dated in some areas. I realize that it's a historical hotel, but I think it can use some refreshed carpets, new wallpaper (or just paint), updated bathrooms and fixtures. Basically it needs a spruce up while maintaining its historical charm. I will say the heavy focus on the floral aesthetic felt a bit more grandma than historical. The layout of our room was a little strange and very fixable. The position of the TV didn't really allow from watching other than from the single arm chair. The handle on the shower wasn't original, which is important because it didn't like up with the backplate making it real easy to confuse hot and cold.

While at the hotel, we dined at the Green Street Tavern and Courtyard Restaurant in the hotel. Both were fine, but the caliber of food at Green Street seemed a bit higher. They do a Sunday Brunch that sounded quite nice, but it didn't overlap with our stay.

Overall, we found it an affordable, convenient option right in the middle of downtown Galena. If you want more modern amenities or are expecting a boutique feel, it might fall short.

Centrally located, the venerable DeSoto House Hotel has very pleasant and helpful front desk staff. (h/t to Linsey.) Three eateries geared toward time of day. Really cool atrium. Garaged parking is free to guests - an especially big deal, given the difficulty of finding street parking downtown.

Nicely decorated rooms in themed sections (e.g. Civil War generals. U.S. presidents.)

We stayed 3 nights on the second floor in the Millard Fillmore room, which offered 2 comfortable queen-sized beds. High-ceilinged room had traditional touches and plenty of room to move around. Three very tall windows offered good view of Main Street. (Window treatments shut out unwanted exterior light.)

Arrived to find 2 chocolates and 2 bottles of water on a bed. Color TV with cable. Other nice touch: DVD player with DVD history of hotel.

Downsides were minor: No microwave oven; no refrigerator. Couldn't get DVD player to play. Awakened at 4:30 a.m. by street cleaner 2 of 3 mornings. Spouse witnessed (and heard) front desk employees kvetching about guests while waiting in lobby.

Special note: Galena's elected officials are considering increasing downtown parking for visitors by installing parking meters. (Many of the vehicles parked downtown belong to retailing/restaurant/bar employees.)

Lovely old hotel with lots of history. Check in was fast and our room was ready. Found the staff to be friendly and knowledgeable about the hotel history and the area. Room and hotel were clean and bed comfortable. One thing we noticed is that tub had the non slip strips which we worry about. We had a problem with the AC as could not regulate the temp. Desk sent maintenance man, Eric, up within 15 minutes. He said could not repair and could turn totally off or he would look into moving to a different room. He took upon himself to call desk, arranged new room and we had moved within 30 minutes. He even carried my wife’s bag.
We did eat several meals at the hotel and found them above average.
Hotel certainly located for walking in the town and they have an attached free parking garage.

My family and I just stayed at the Desoto House for our first road trip after Covid started. The hotel is every bit as grand and beautiful as it is on the website. The check in was very safe and contactless, all staff wore masks at all times and I felt very comfortable having my family there. We got the midweek breakfast package and it was well worth it. Breakfast was delicious! Happy hour on the patio out front was also outstanding - perfect dirty martini. And great people watching as you sit and sip. I would highly recommend staying here not only for the great service but for the location in the heart of everything. Thanks for the wonderful memories Desoto! And THANK YOU for finding our son’s panda stuffy and shipping it back to us. We’ll definitely be back!
