Spent xmas at Matafonua..food scrumptious .. try the daily specials accomodation clean and room & bedding better than expected with mosquito net. Hosts & their family are extremely friendly & accomodating to suit any type of holiday plans. Beachfront view is to die for & staff are delightful.
Beautiful property. The fales were exactly what you’d imagine on the paradise beach where it is located, the shared bathrooms were maintained well and the decor was modern and stylish while maintaining the paradise island theme. Beaches and views were breathtaking and made full use of free activities which include snorkel and fin hire, kayaks and bike hire. On site restaurant provided delicious, albeit slightly overpriced, food all day (we found no other option for food so bought from the restaurant for our entire stay, this is an added expense - higher costs may be due to import costs?). We did not receive a welcome talk (we arrived at 1am) while other guests did, this would have been helpful to know what was available/best times to do the activities etc. We ended up asking the owner, who was always on site, questions which would have been covered in the welcome talk. Amazing wildlife to see, leopard (zebra) sharks, eagle rays and a large variety of fish on your doorstep. Overall a delightful stay and would highly recommend for all groups; couples, friends and families.…
First time visiting Matafouna and we loved it. Nina and Darren are very welcoming and there is a very relaxed atmosphere, everything runs like clockwork. The staff take fantastic care of you and there is always laughter heard. The food is always fresh and tastes amazing. The beaches are beautiful, but most of all the whale swim. Incredible. You get the chance to meet some lovely people and share some amazing stories. Would highly recommend a visit to Matafouna.
This is by far one of the most magical place on earth we've been! The fales are perfect, clean and comfortable. The beach is stunning. You are far from everywhere and can feel the calm and peacefulness. At night, the sky gets alive. What a show! Darren and hiws familly are really friendly and will help us anytime we had a question. They have been there for 10 years and are happy to share their passion of the underwater. The food is good and you have pretty good vegetarian options. We went to swim with the whales twice with Simon and we don't even have the words to describe the magnificence of it. Memotirs we will cherrish in our heart for the rest of our lives! Thank you so much for your hospitality and for all the joy you bring to this tiny island! You made our dream possible!! :) Catherine & Michaëlle…
Matafonua Lodge is a little slice of heaven. We spent a wonderfully relaxing week there whale watching and diving. The fales are basic but clean and comfortable and you soon get used to a communal bathroom again. As there are only 9 fales, you soon get to know all the other guests who tend to be like-minded as they have all made the journey for similar reasons. This led to excellent camaraderie out on the boats and round the breakfast or dinner table discussing the day's adventures. Nina and Darren really care about this place, the staff and the ocean; they go out of their way to make you feel at home and their kids are a credit too (even if JJ couldn't find the leopard sharks;)). Our final night at the Tongan Feast, dancing with the local staff summarised the friendly, laid back atmosphere. Oh - and swimming with the Humpbacks is out of this world. We added a third day on - it's so addictive - and the guides and boat captains choreograph the day in such a way that the interactions are entirely on the whales' terms, the perfect example of sustainable, respectful tourism.…
