What a really nice place to stay! A bit different than a traditional hotel but that's what I liked. Very quaint! The staff was very friendly, the room was clean(a bit dated) but I'm not one who minds that, really good continental breakfast, We actually stayed in the one bedroom apartment and it was completely stocked with everything we needed.... I was in town to visit my daughter and The Homestead was only a couple of blocks away so it was the logical choice. The place looks like a plantation home from The South in the 1860s--definitely out of place on a tree-shaded street that is lined with brick homes. It has a lovely porch where you can sit and... Stayed here for my nephews wedding. Great old 1929 hotel! Charm in every corner. It was updated while keeping the charm of " yester" year. Having said that, keep in mind it was built in 1929. The rooms are small, Ours had a dressing room in front of our bathroom. My in-laws had a room with a 1929 stall shower.... More

First let me say I go out of my way to stay at bed and breakfasts and historic hotels, so a bit of peeling paint, a small sink, or creaky pipes never bother me, and I did find aspects of this hotel (such as the exterior, mail boxes, and tiny old elevator) very charming. My favorite part was the in-room... More

If you are looking for an affordable hotel with a great location but willing to tolerate an old-fashioned setting, the Homestead is the place for you. Just 3 blocks from Lake Michigan, Northwestern, and the shops and restaurants of downtown Evanston. The rooms are nicely sized and we had one with a walk-in closet and refrigerator, and you can open... More

It's charming, quaint and stylish. A big strength is in their uniqueness - not being a commercial/chain hotel. Excellent location! On a beautiful street, a block from the lake and the university. Lots of nice restaurants and shops around there. Staff was excellent. The lounge, bar, restaurant and front porch are supurb spots to hang around. Free garage parking is... More

If you're looking for headboards screwed to the wall and prefab plastic bathrooms this place is not for you. With our favorite hotels either full or priced ridiculously due to Americas's Cup, which is why we were in town, we opted to stay in Evanston at this historic hotel, Room was fine and the bathroom a throwback to grandma's house.... I had a really great 2 night stay at the Homestead. This is a cozy inn, similar to one you might find in the UK. My room was comfortable, clean, and relaxing. Furnishings were understated, simple, classic American, but not cheap looking. Far nicer than the average 3 star chain hotel. If you like modern and shiny (think a crisp,... More

Visiting Chicago for the first time but didn't want to spend $400 a night downtown. This hotel is convenient to the CTA. Lots of restaurants within blocks. 3 blocks from Lake Michigan. Free parking and continental breakfast.

I really liked the old-style character of the hotel and the calm vibe. The location perfect for walks towards the commercial blocks but also towards the lake beachfronts. The rooms were generally clean, spacious, bright and very quiet, nothing distracting or distasteful. The personnel also was friendly. The breakfast was ok. It could be a bit more generous but overall... More
