We're not bed-and-breakfast people. With the exception of the Inn at Antietam, which overlooks the Civil War battlefield of Antietam in Maryland, we've rarely stayed at one. But Rose Hotel in Elizabethtown, Illinois, is an exception. Located on the banks of the Ohio River, it was built in 1812 and began sheltering travelers the following year. Breakfast, lunch and dinner...

My friends and I passed through Elizabethtown on our cross country bicycle trip and had planned on camping at the bed and breakfast for the night. Being that it was very hot and humid and the price for camping on the lawn was somewhat steep, we inquired about rooms and decided to treat ourselves for the night. We were so...

We just got back and loved it. We were in the Manny room and the view front out porch was stunning. The town had a July 4th festival, we literally had fireworks out our front door. Amazing! Grocery store, restaurants, bars are all within walking distance. I would of given it a five star be we did not see any...

We had a wonderful stay here and will definitely be back again. Our room was clean, the hotel and surrounding area was quiet, and the view from the outside porch was fabulous. The price was very affordable for such a great place. The owners are very friendly and made us feel at home. Can't wait to visit again! :D

My husband and I went to Elizabethtown for a quick Memorial Day weekend getaway this year. The hotel was very nice and quiet. It has a beautiful view of the Ohio River with a gazebo you can sit in and enjoy the quiet. It is very close to the main restaurant in town. Our room was comfortable and clean. The...

We stayed here so we could be close to hiking trails in the Shawnee National Forest. This place is beautiful. We had rooms overlooking the river, we could hear the hum of the barges going past from the room, it was so close. Our kids, 8 and 12, enjoyed climbing on the rocks by the river. Little kids would need...

We wanted to stay near the Shawnee forest and found this gorgeous piece of history on Trip Advisor. Sue, Bruce, Emily and Mallory were all very kind and helpful and keen to please. We were given our choice of rooms. As another review explains - the town has clearly undergone many financial hardships. Several buildings stand empty and derelict. I...

My husband and I stayed at the Historic Rose Hotel in May, 2014. I was torn between staying here or at a B&B across the street. We ended up at the Rose Hotel, mostly because it is supposedly haunted! We were the only ones staying that evening and had our choice of rooms. We stayed in the McFarland Suite, which...

The Grand Rose is something to see as the state has spared no expense in renovations and restoration details true to it's glory of yesteryear. The views from the front porch and gazebo to the Ohio river does not get any better. Emily the Inn Keeper is the hostess with the mostess and will share some great stories and historical...

The hotel was built in 1812 and originally served as a tavern on the river for pioneers traveling on the river. This is the oldest operating hotel in Illinois. The hotel faces the river and is set in the middle of a very small town (Elizabethtown)....a very quaint setting. My husband and I stayed elsewhere but we made the decision...
