Due to Covid, all of our vacations for the year were cancelled. We were looking for someplace to go and do something and yet not be around many other people. We had never been to this part of southern IL before.
The cabins are in a perfect location, close to lots of hiking areas: Rim Rock, Garden of the God's, Pounds Hallow, etc. We stayed in Coyote Hollow. It was a nice little cabin with an outside fire pit and gas grill. We used both. There were some cute x-mas lights on the front porch and deck that looked nice lighted at night. We were happy to find two roasting sticks in the cabin. (Some families might prefer more than 2 sticks.) There were also a few lighters which helped getting a fire started. Plenty of free firewood too. The best part was NO mosquitos during our stay!!
The property was VERY beautiful and well maintained! We LOVED the animals and we visited them every day. There was even a small garden we could pick veggies from and some additional trails on the property we had wished we'd found sooner.

It was contactless from check in to check out and all of the cabins were spaced well from each other so we really felt like we were the only ones on the property.
Cell service in the area was very limited, however the cabins did have fiber optic wi-fi.
A few 'cons': the bathroom floor in our cabin was pretty worn and could be replaced, the mattresses were just 'ok', we would have preferred the kitchen/appliances be cleaned better, some of the outside furniture by the fire and some deck furniture was quite worn and could definitely be replaced and the cabin could be a little more updated. All this being said, we've already discussed going back another time to this same cabin or to try out some of the other ones.
It was a nice and relaxing get away!! There is a lot to do in the area!

We had a great time at Rim Rock's Dogwood Cabins in the Coyote Hollow cabin. The cabin is a good size for a couple. The kitchen was well stocked with kitchen items, the bathroom was clean and well lit, the screened porch is nice (did yoga/stretching out there) and the main/bedroom is spacious enough. The wifi is strong and there are enough outlets for charging things. I BBQ'd one night, which was fun.

The cabin is close to the animals, and that was a plus for us. We almost brought our dog (didn't for other reasons) but she would have fit in just fine (leashed). We also hiked the very pretty trails on the property. The abundant maps kept us from getting lost. The info book in the cabin was very helpful and complete. And Steve and Tara were very friendly and helpful!

The location up on Karber's Ridge is great, especially right across from Rim Rock Trail (one of the best short hikes in the Midwest, IMHO). The place is close enough to most of the eastern Shawnee National Forest to allow less driving and more hiking and sightseeing. Garden of the Gods is nearby.

We visited in late April 2021 for 5 nights. We will definitely stay here again!

I had the perfect little 2 day getaway with just my 2 year old blue heeler, Jane, and we couldn't have picked a better spot! The property was gorgeous, the animals were darling and the trails were plentiful. I stayed in the Cougar Bluff cabin which was perfect for us. I am overly cautious when it comes to shared spaces so I brought my own bedding and cleaning products to clean upon arrival. Although I used my own supply, I was happy to see that the cabin was stocked with wipes and sanitizer as well as an ample supply of cleaning products for use during our stay. The cabin was clearly thoroughly cleaned before our arrival which was an added relief. Also, they had this amazing supersized lint roller that was terrific for picking up dog hair (something I desperately need for our home!). Another happy and unexpected surprise was that there was Netflix in the cabin!! This was the cherry on top of already awesome accommodations! We were able to have the perfect balance of activity and rest with our morning run and walks, coffee on the porch (thanks for supplying the Folgers!) and binge watching Netflix at night. The cabins were spaced out pretty far apart from one another so there was never any noise or concerns of any kind...it was nice to have others in the distance but the space was super private and peaceful. I was a little confused about the area trail system on the property and nearby but after just wandering around a little we figured a lot out in just one day. We walked the property at night and got up at sunrise to run near Garden of the Gods, then toured the area briefly before heading back to the cabin. Went out again at lunch time and discovered the Rim Rock rec trail quite by happy accident. The only thing I didn't get to do that I would have liked was to check out the nearby swim beach, but there were no dogs allowed on the beach and I was afraid to leave her unattended in a strange place. Also would have liked to have a bonfire but it was definitely too hot for that! I did not personally meet the owners during the stay, but I reached out via email to inquire about some running trails and got a very detailed response from Steve with some helpful suggestions. All in all it was a terrific experience and perfect getaway and I look forward to booking again soon!!

I've been coming, almost annually, to Rimrock Dogwood Cabins for several years (over 7 years). At first by myself and then bringing my granddaughter. Each and every time has been a joy. The proximity of the various parks/trails, especially Rimrock Trail (my personal favorite) which is literally within walking distance from my cabin, is just plain awesome. The cabin is well maintained, stocked with the essentials and the surrounding grounds are beautiful. Most recently, with the pandemic, I had to change my plans and, as always, they were very accommodating. I'm not going to lie, I was worried when owners changed but the new owners carried on with the same standards as the original. This trip, I informed them I recalled a rocking chair on the porch of the cabin where I always stayed and noticed it was no longer there the last couple of times I came. One of my favorite things is to sit on the screened in porch and drink coffee in the morning (also an adult beverage in the evening), so I asked if it were possible to have it returned. When I arrived, it wasn't on the porch and I chalked it up to it no longer being available. The next morning, one of the owners (Steve) arrived with a rocker and I have spent a lot of time this trip in that rocker, enjoying the weather, the view, recovering from my hikes and most definitely the rocker! That is customer service. I love this place and will continue to stay here in the future.

My wife and I and our pooch are currently here and have nothing but good to say! They have thought of everything you may need and provided it. The only thing you need to bring is food, charcoal (although there is a propane grill provided as well) and any personal items you may want. Cabins are clean, well stocked and in a beautiful setting. The check in and check out is about as easy as you can make it! I wont list all the things they have here in case you bring children but there are plenty of things to do nearby and they provide a book with listings that give names, locations, how far from campsite, as I said they thought of everything. Plenty of hiking and such close by.The cabin we are in is very "rustic"l and comfortable (and clean). We are in one of the smaller cabins (Cougar Bluff) and although a little tight with a big dog we love it. I had asked prior to arrival if the thermostat was accessable because my wife gets cold easy and when we showed up the heater was on and we came in to a toasty cabin! Thank you for all the thought you put into the visitors and their wants, great job!!!

Stayed for 2 nights no hot water, dusty, dirty frudge, broken blinds, constantly running toilet. Told management about this and they commented they would fix it after we left. Mind u I paid 400 dollars for 2 nights there. Also recieved a and degree burn from their propane grill that had a bad igniter. Another lady left a review on Facebook that her cabin smelt of urine and mold. They also refused her a refund because she went in to pee after making a 2 hour drive there. I was doubled booked as well would not recommend anyone to stay here.also upon asking for a charcoal grill they gave me one that wouldnt even stand up.

Response from Steve Melville, Owner at Rim Rock's Dogwood Cabins
Responded Apr 9, 2021
Thank you again Angie for your reminder. We have installed new blinds, toilet flushing apparatus, and am currently investigating that darn water heater but so glad you did indeed have hot water as you stated in your message to us. Thanks to you, the next guests were over the moon happy. Your message to the management reads "Good morning, I just wanted to let u know that the bathroom toilet keeps running and has done so since we got here yesterday evening. The front blind were also broken and the charcoal grill wouldn't stand up. Hot water didnt last to long for showers last night Not complaining it's a beautiful stay as always but wanted to bring these things to your attention as past renter's may not have." As you were provided another alternate grill, and the blinds were offered to be changed out by our housekeeper during your stay, and we followed up with your Facebook message after the resolutions were in place, we felt we had met your expectations. In the past we have provided free nights to you; one free night when our cabins sponsored a trash pickup for the Shawnee National Forest and a free weekend when there was a booking error, in which you enjoyed yourself so much you came back for third visit. To clarify, the burn occurred during misuse of a propane grill, the second visit, while you were here for the free weekend in 2020 that was compensation for the double booking. During this last stay as every issue you mention was corrected or offered to be corrected during your stay, we will not be offering additional compensation. Again, thank you for this feedback as we work to improve our property, so our future guests continue have a “beautiful stay” to use your words! Best wishes. RRDC Management

Everything was great.

We had a little trouble with our WiFi because carpenter ants actually ate through the cables. The owners worked at getting it fixed as soon as possible and we could still get a signal from the neighboring cabin well enough in the mean time.

The place is charming, there was coffee and fresh farm eggs! Free firewood was available to use. Dark skies were great. The animals were entertaining. PRO TIP: the goats won't eat your left over pancakes, but the rooster will.

This was a “one in the morning decision to skip town for a night” kind of planning. I called and Steve was awesome. We reserved the dog house and let me tell you! We drove in and I kid you not the sweetest donkeys were hanging out right in front of our cabin. The attention to detail, The privacy, the decorations, cleanliness...five stars. The awesome rooster, their so very cool livestock guardian dog Scout (who happened to walk my girls to the cabin and back like the awesome breed he is). After being cooped up in the house for months, this place even for a night brought some sanity back to our family. The effort put forth by this family that runs this place did not go unnoticed! Don’t forget to look up into the sky when you are doing your campfire. We have never seen so many stars being from Chicago. We were able to hike rim rock just before it got dark and campfire at night. Again, I have never seen a place put such an amazing effort to make sure you enjoy your time there! One of a kind place for sure! Thank you!

We had a fantastic time in the "Doghouse." The cabin had mostly everything we needed, except for a cutting board (which there are plenty of plates to use.) The front door could use a little oil to calm that squeak so it would stop competing with the songs of the many birds. There was a fire ring for making the perfect smores. The back deck was perfect for morning coffee. The front porch was a great place to watch the critters in the pasture. The shower had plenty of towels for the five of us. The beds were comfy not to firm but not too soft. there was a choice of pillow types for those who do not need to bring their own. The property is just beautiful to stroll around the trails. We cannot wait to come back.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Rimrock dogwood cabins. The cabins had all we needed for our family and dogs. My daughter especially liked the farm animals and I loved spending evenings around the fire pit. Plus the area hikes were beautiful and not crowded.

Absolutely. Here is a comprehensive list of all that is provided. All of these Southern Illinois Shawnee Forest cabins have air conditioning, heat, kitchen including stove, frig, microwave, coffee maker, toaster; bathroom with shower, screened in porch, electric fireplace, satellite tv and DVD, all linens, cookware, plates, utensil, outside gas and charcoal grill and picnic table. Deer Run has two full baths and Eagle's Retreat has one large full bath and a half bath in the loft. We provide dry wood for the fire ring, DVDs, games, coffee and popcorn. The cabin inside walls are either cedar or pine and each cabin is decorated in a pleasing cabin style using the name of the cabin as the theme. Everything you need is in the cabins except food and we do provide coffee and popcorn. We have 5 cabins of all sizes and something for everyone. All cabins have wifi. Eagle's Retreat and Deer Run have a phone. A perfect spot for a Southern Illinois Shawnee Forest vacation.
