Hotel's Favorite
Beautiful Hotel with a great location. We checked in early and were offered an upgrade with a view that was ready. We took it. We had a good river view which we enjoyed. The beds were very comfortable, perhaps a little soft, but pretty good, lots of pillows. The bathroom was very pretty with a large shower and even a make up mirror. The room had a Nespresso coffee maker which came with a few pods and also a tea bag to let you know you can just heat water in it also. Waking up to a nice hot cup of coffee in your room is a real plus for us. Our room was missing an ice bucket and come cups, but when texted the help number, we were brought the supplies we needed right away. They had a large TV and it had Chromcast, so we were able to stream movies from services we already had, Netflix and Hulu. The location is wonderful and we were able to walk to the Art Institute, Millennium park, many restaurants and the River Walk was right in front of the hotel. There is a roof top bar that is very popular and they view is nice, but bar is fairly small so very hard to get into. They do give hotel guest priority, so that was nice. We ate at the restaurant, Land and Lakes two times. Once for drinks and dinner and then again for breakfast. Both meals were good but not anything to get too excited about. On the weekend they always had a wait list, but Sunday evening and Monday day and evening there was not any wait. We would stay here again if in Chicago to do the normal tourist type things. Great location, ALL the staff was very polite, helpful and nice. I can’t say enough nice about this hotel.

[UPDATED REVIEW] I have Included most of my original review below for reference but a few updates I wanted to make to my review now that I have left the hotel. Paloma (manager): 5 out of 5 Front desk: 2 out of 5 Housekeeping: 0 out of 5 Location: 5 out of 5 Or who Is sent up to your room, this is a 5 star or 1 star hotel. My final rating was a compromise between the two In terms of location and cleanliness, this is definitely 5 stars. You are right across from the Riverwalk, close to Millennium Park and the views from the suite are impressive. Tons of restaurants and shopping within walking distance Now back to the customer service issue. To say it’s “hit or miss” is an understatement of the century. Some examples: 1) I called the front desk the first night and ask them to pull out the sofa bed and have it prepared for children. (Ie put down sheets and pillows etc. I have requested this several times at other hotels and never had an issue The person who answered the phone asked if the bed was “stuck” and I said no, I just needed someone to come and pull out the bed and put sheets and pillowcases down while we were out. He replied that was not possible given Covid but they could leave the sheets and pillows outside. Although I was frustrated I said fine and hung up. Then I recalled that I requested daily housekeeping services and inevitably someone will have to come to the room to turn down the bed, change out sheets etc. and obviously Covid was not preventing that. I called back and presented this information to a different representative and she said “ of course we can help with that “ and she took care of it. 2) That same night I called the front desk and said we were having issues with their air-conditioning specifically there was no ventilation in the entry room and the AC was blowing hot air above 67°. The technician who came up basically said there was nothing he could do for us and the only thing to do was to leave the bedroom door open to let airflow through the suite. The next day the situation became even worse and anytime we tried to set the thermostat above 65 we got hot air blowing into the room. I called and another technician came up And I told him the previous technician said he could not do anything for us. He quickly adjusted some settings and vents and miraculously the problem was fixed. 3) i called the Front desk And requested to borrow a pair of scissors and was told that I would have to come down to the front desk because “no one was available to bring it up”. I’ve traveled to over 50 countries and stayed at some of the nicest and most expensive hotels in the world and everything in between and never heard of such nonsense. At the very worst I’ve been told that it may take a while or someone will be up as soon as possible but never been told that they simply can’t send someone up. Another issue that I ran into was depending on what time you call you could be waiting 10’or 20 or 30 minutes or longer until someone actually picks up at the front desk. Sometimes there’s just an automated voice prompt that says they’re too busy to take your call and the call disconnects. again having stayed at many many hotels all over the world I’ve never encountered this phenomenon. If not for the issues with customer service or lack there of this would definitely be a five star establishment all the way. Some of the personnel in this hotel needs to be terminated immediately because they definitely in the wrong profession if answering questions are providing assistance is an inconvenience or annoyance. Another issue which other reviewer’s have mentioned is there is a large amount of foot traffic through the hotel and entrance to the elevators due to the Numerous restaurants and bars surrounding the hotel. On numerous occasions we passed drunk or puking bar patrons or dogs taking a dump on the carpet right outside the hotel entrance. There is another entrance to the hotel which seems to bypass a lot of this “outside” foot traffic but inexplicably it is closed Paloma, Who I believe is a front desk supervisor or a manager reached out to me and was very generous with her time and I think attempted to address Several of the issues i raised in my review while I was still at the hotel. Unfortunately many of those things did not get better but actually got worse. A few examples: 1) After a day out we came back to the room and basically half of the room had Not even been touched or cleaned by housekeeping. My mother who was in a different suite had similar complaints about the consistency of service or Complete lack thereof so I know it was not an isolated incident. I immediately called the front desk and ask someone to come by and fix up the room properly once we left and when we returned from dinner they basically had left the blankets and pillows on the bed for us to put down ourselves. This was after I specifically requested someone to actually make up the bed and change out the comforter while we were out. This occurred many times during the stay where I would ask housekeeping to come up and actually service the room and they would say they could not since we were in the suite but even after we left nothing was actually serviced it was usually left for us to do ourselves. Never seen this before. 2) I called and asked the front desk if they had a screwdriver I could use and was told that they did not have one I could borrow. The next morning on the way down to breakfast I asked someone at the front desk and they said they had a screwdriver and within two minutes a friendly engineer came by and helped me for the 10 seconds that I needed. Again just complete lack of consistency in terms of customer service. Paloma And several of the front desk team members were very friendly and helpful but I would say at least 50% of the time the person who answered the phone sounded annoyed or bothered that I was even calling them. I definitely think an overhaul is needed especially for the front desk team and I am just not someone who is anal or Uber picky about things as you can see from the many reviews and the variety of establishments I have stayed out all over the world Given the issues with customer service I would not recommend staying at this establishment and would return to The Gwen which I thoroughly enjoyed during my first visit to Chicago. Thank you Paloma for your efforts.

I would highly recommend renting the LondonHouse cupola for a proposal. Manny was extremely helpful, and the whole process went so smoothly. It was great knowing I could leave all of the planning and logistics to him, and have it turn out so great.
