Our trip to Chicago was incredible, mainly because of the service provided by Mell. He went above and beyond to ensure that our stay was superb. Mell went out of his way to help us get into delicious restaurants and provide us with some great sightseeing tips. Not to mention the fact that he so kindly invited us to his garden party on our last day, where we listened to some seriously talented folk play music, and met Mell's fun and chatty neighbors. He's also a great cook, we've had some mouth-watering blueberry waffles and fried chicken. Even their cat is special, she welcomed us when we arrived and then made her way into our hearts by never leaving our room :). We highly recommend Welcome Inn Manor, make sure you meet Mell.
This is a beautiful restored house brimming with antiques, pictures and artefacts . The innkeeper, Mel and his son Jimmy were perfect hosts, friendly, helpful and Mel prepared a ‘world famous breakfast’ each morning !! With a dollop of charisma and good humour. It is apparent his guests return again and again and we could see why. Nothing was too much trouble. Although this fantastic Inn is on the Southside do NOT be put off by this and any negative comments from others. We walked every day to the L ( local train station) for easy access to downtown and the locals were friendly, courteous and helpful. This is a true gem. Mel please look us up when you visit NZ.
In May we stayed four nights at the Welcome Inn Manor. The Welcome Inn Manor is a beautiful home built in 1893 that has been lovingly restored and renovated by Mell and Angie. Mell and his son Jimmy were perfect hosts. Our room was quiet, clean, nicely furnished and comfortable. We enjoyed conversing with our fellow guests around a very good breakfast each morning. We found the Inn’s location to be quite convenient. While we had use of a car, Mell offers transportation service to those who need it. Mell is a great ambassador for Chicago. For those not familiar with the town (and even those who are) he offers great suggestions on things to do and places to eat. We would happily stay again at the Welcome Inn Manor.
Had the most horrible experience booking this place for a planned trip to visit UChicago. Booked dates from June 7-9 on the website but never received a confirmation email. I called the In-Keeper a day later to let him know I hadn’t received a confirmation email with the details of my reservation. He told me to text him my name and the dates of my reservation and that he would personally send me an email confirming the details of my reservation. Never heard from the Inn Keeper until about a week later (ignored my texts), when he finally responds to my texts, confused about the dates of my reservation and telling me he no longer had the dates available that I had reserved. Mind you, they’ve already taken $300 from my bank account the day I made the reservation. I asked for a refund since there was no longer availability on the dates I reserved, and I was told by the Inn-Keeper “well, I can’t just refund you the whole amount without taking some of it for holding the reservation”. I expressed my dismay that I had to pay anything at all, give the fact that the trip was more than two weeks away AND it’s not my fault you overbooked on the dates I reserved online. Eventually the Inn-Keeper orally agreed to refund my entire $300 deposit, which I’m still waiting on by the way. I don’t appreciate the way this went down and I don’t appreciate the service I received in attempting to resolve the issue. It left a bad taste in my mouth for this establishment and if I don’t get my $300 back pronto, I will make sure to tell everyone I know (and don’t know) about this experience.…
Stayed 2 nights midweek in October here. Mel and his son were very welcoming hosts indeed. This is a beautifully restored and decorated historic house in BronzevilleThe rooms are comfortable and Mel’s breakfasts are something else! The house is full of fascinating information about Bronzeville and the people who live there. Mel will drive you into the city if possible plus it is only a five minute walk to the train if you prefer. We really enjoyed our conversations with Mel and would happily stay here again.
