Checked in yesterday. Up all night from the food at the restaurant and then promptly woken up by mild chatter from the room next door. Apparently the walls are paper thin. Every time a guest closes their door near our room it moves our door enough to sound like someone opened it and closed it. Great fun in the middle... More

Loved the place. Great hotel to feel really pampered. The rooms are truly 5-star, nice furniture, gorgeous bed and bathroom. The toiletries are classy and top notch. There is a great bar with a competent tender. The law cation is fabulous in the glitzy part of Chicago and entrance from one of the upscale malls.

Great location, very disappointed I paid for an "upgrade" that was offered as I overlooked a roof and the side of another hotel. Also, was very disappointed the rooftop bar was closed both days, one day was a private event and the second day I was going to stop and enjoy the terrace for a night cap at 9:45pm and... More

This was a very last minute booking, I was suppose to drive home this night. I had a quite frustrating day and decided to hotwire a room and spend the night in Chicago. I would stay at this hotel again though at twice the price I paid. As a general rule I am not a hotel aficionado. When I travel... More

Location location location...perfect. The hotel is clean and very hip. High five to Mark at the bar and to Matt, who helps out as you arrive and depart. Matt's suggestions for places to go and directions were spot on. I look forward to a return trip to Chicago, 4 days was just not enough time.

The Gwen used to be the Conrad. The lobby area has been greatly remodeled for the better. The amazing giant deck on the 5th floor with skyscraper views is still there. The rooms are a bit tight but we had a wonderful view of the former Sears tower down to the water. Food great. Conference faciltiies very solid. Location right... More

Customer service was virtually nonexistent. Well before arriving, I wanted to ask about switching my reservation dates from two nights in September to four nights in October, and tried reaching in-house reservations for weeks and got only voicemail, which was never returned. Check-in was fine, and I think the attendant thanked me for being an SPG Preferred member, although this... More

The service at this hotel was outstanding. Each employee we encountered was helpful and accommodating during our stay and you could tell that they take great pride in their work. The lobby area and bar are very trendy and fun, and the location is superb if you are looking for a place in the middle of everything. The rooms are... More

Not what I would have thought in a luxury hotel, better off staying at the Trump or Langham Chicago... Not worth the price. The Bar was a nice touch. I would only staying if someone else was paying for the room !!!

This is a very nice "upscale" hotel although the lobby has an odd location and while it has a sign on Michigan avenue its hard to reach. You have to walk through a shopping mall and then find an obscure elevator. Otherwise this is exactly what you would expect from a four-star (Luxury collection or similar chain such Park Hyatt... Staying in Magnificent Mile

Neighborhood Profile
Magnificent Mile

This area between Oak Avenue and the Chicago River is more a shopping paradise than a full-out neighborhood. For prime upscale shopping, this is the place to go. It’s busy, energetic, and packed with shoppers. You'll also find hundreds of restaurants and dozens of hotels, all on the mid- to high-end scale. Some of the city’s most iconic buildings like the Wrigley Building, John Hancock Center and other architectural marvels define the magnificence of this neighborhood.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Ideally situated in the heart of the Windy City, The Gwen, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Chicago is rooted in the history and heritage of the city's Magnificent Mile, paying homage to the 1930s in both its architecture and ethos. The newest member of Starwood Hotels and Resorts' prestigious group of Luxury Collection Hotels is an artistic icon that exudes timeless style and elegance. Housed within the landmark McGraw-Hill Building, The Gwen features an Art Deco aesthetic amplified by a sculptural façade, famously created by artist Gwen Lux in 1928. The idea of a female artisan making her mark in a predominantly male design city depicts an exciting atmosphere of change. The building has been home to many stories in its illustrious past, and today The Gwen provides the ideal canvas for guests to create their own distinct memories. This 300-room hotel includes 199 King accommodations with separate soaking tubs and showers, 54 Double/Double accommodations, as well as 34 luxurious suites, including some featuring beautiful terraces overlooking Michigan Avenue. The inventory, which averages 380 square feet per guest room, includes rooms that are ADA-accessible. Guests of The Gwen can enjoy the use of plush bathrobes and slippers to make their stay more comfortable, as well as complimentary in-room basic Internet access (wired and wireless), a 42-inch flat screen television with HD stations, a surround sound system, a Keurig brewing system, and an in-room safe. Offering the best of Chicago from right outside its doors, The Gwen is located on the Magnificent Mile, minutes away from premier shopping, world-class dining, and exciting cultural and entertainment hotspots, such as Navy Pier and Millennium Park. Connected to The Shops at North Bridge, The Gwen provides guests with enclosed access to upscale retailers, such as Nordstrom Michigan Avenue, and Stuart Weitzman. ... more   less
