We stayed at the Gwen one night in late June. We found the hotel to be very comfortable and met all our needs. Location was perfect, just steps away from Michigan Ave., North Bridge Shops, many high quality restaurants and shops. Only negative is the lobby is up a level from the street and not directly accessible without using an... More

Just came back home from a 4 night stay at The Gwen. It is in the perfect location to see everything downtown, with access to the train and bus within a block. You can literally get anywhere within minutes. Our room was very spacious and clean. Bathroom had a sweet bathtub and shower, which we loved! Everyone was super friendly!... More

A very stylish hotel in a great location on Michigan Avenue. The room was large and well fitted out with a larger than average bathroom. All very clean and well maintained. The reception and bar areas looked as if they had recently been completed and were very well presented with 'art' features throughout. The entrance through the Nordstrom shopping mall... More

I stayed here on business for a conference. As part of the SPG "Luxury Collection" brand, I was expecting a hotel experience similar to their other luxury properties (eg: the Augustine, the Palace, the Goldener Hirsch, the SLS). Instead it was a bland uneventful stay, that lowered my view of the "Luxury Collection" brand. First, the main lobby is on... More

Stayed here on business this week and really enjoyed it. Larger rooms than most, nicely decorated. Really good "conference food", and large lobby/Inside bar area. Great location, we were able to walk to all of the restaurants we visited, pretty easy to get to airport. My only negative, and small, the fruit pie "of the day" was fig, and really... More

We came for dinner and drinks. In the course of almost 2 hours, we had two drinks each. Our server came and took our order, dropped off our drinks. He returned to take our food order and that's when everyone disappeared, for almost 45 minutes. The entire wait staff was inside somewhere, and no one seems to know where. When... More

Lobby has been updated again, twice in about three years. Tend to be going more for the sleek modern look now. I have been here a number of times for business but the location is perfect for shoppers, elevator from hotel takes you to shopping on Michigan Avenue. Bar staff is very friendly keurig in room, lobby has coffee on... More

The Gwen is a beautiful hotel on Rush Street, just a block from the magnificent mile. Eataly, great shopping (Oak St., Rush St., Michigan Ave), and good restaurants are walking distance. It was easy to walk to most places, and it was a fast and cheap Uber or Taxi to the theater district ($6-10). The beds were comfortable, and the... More

We stayed here for a long weekend to celebrate my husband's 40th birthday. Great location right in the middle of everything. Lobby is hip and trendy looking. Room was nice, but I didn't really see anything luxury about it. The bathroom was nicely updated with a good amount of counter space (though the layout was somewhat awkward). We had our... More

This hotel was a fantastic place for my Chicago experience. I arrived to my reservation early, so my room wasn't ready. However, they encouraged me to make myself at home in the lobby or on the rooftop terrace. The free wifi worked on the terrace, so I was able to get some work done while enjoying a sunny Chicago afternoon.... More

Staying in Magnificent Mile

Neighborhood Profile
Magnificent Mile
Over 400 stores pack the concrete along Michigan Avenue, the eight-block stretch known as Magnificent Mile. This area between Oak Avenue and the Chicago River is more a shopping paradise than a full-out neighborhood. For prime upscale shopping, this is the place to go. It’s busy, energetic, and packed with shoppers. You'll also find hundreds of restaurants and dozens of hotels, all on the mid- to high-end scale. Some of the city’s most iconic buildings like the Wrigley Building, John Hancock Center and other architectural marvels define the magnificence of this neighborhood.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Ideally situated in the heart of the Windy City, The Gwen, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Chicago is rooted in the history and heritage of the city's Magnificent Mile, paying homage to the 1930s in both its architecture and ethos. The newest member of Starwood Hotels and Resorts' prestigious group of Luxury Collection Hotels is an artistic icon that exudes timeless style and elegance. Housed within the landmark McGraw-Hill Building, The Gwen features an Art Deco aesthetic amplified by a sculptural façade, famously created by artist Gwen Lux in 1928. The idea of a female artisan making her mark in a predominantly male design city depicts an exciting atmosphere of change. The building has been home to many stories in its illustrious past, and today The Gwen provides the ideal canvas for guests to create their own distinct memories. This 300-room hotel includes 199 King accommodations with separate soaking tubs and showers, 54 Double/Double accommodations, as well as 34 luxurious suites, including some featuring beautiful terraces overlooking Michigan Avenue. The inventory, which averages 380 square feet per guest room, includes rooms that are ADA-accessible. Guests of The Gwen can enjoy the use of plush bathrobes and slippers to make their stay more comfortable, as well as complimentary in-room basic Internet access (wired and wireless), a 42-inch flat screen television with HD stations, a surround sound system, a Keurig brewing system, and an in-room safe. Offering the best of Chicago from right outside its doors, The Gwen is located on the Magnificent Mile, minutes away from premier shopping, world-class dining, and exciting cultural and entertainment hotspots, such as Navy Pier and Millennium Park. Connected to The Shops at North Bridge, The Gwen provides guests with enclosed access to upscale retailers, such as Nordstrom Michigan Avenue, and Stuart Weitzman. ... more   less
