This place is an overpriced hostel at best. I paid close to 300 for a night, couldn’t get into my room, got in and found toilet water all over the floor, my room keys needed to be reactivated every time I wanted to whether my room, I needed them reactivated so many times I had security called on me because they thought I wasn’t the person on the reservation... Let me preface this review by saying: I spent most of my life in hotels for short stays due to work. Many of my friends and colleagues ask me where to stay because I’ve built a pretty good scheme to judge hotels by and rarely do I review them... The attention to detail in the rooms is amazing... My room: 1107 Skyline view and really nice exterior view to the city... Unless they’re sold out, I don’t intend on staying anywhere else...

...We politely decline as we're just killing some time... Either the Robey doesn't pay their bartenders enough money to work there or their company culture is no longer interested in providing hospitality to customers, rather looking at how much money they can squeeze from them... Stayed at The Robey for one night...one night too many... Really, for the price of this stay there should have been some sort of compensation or AT MINIMUM "let us get the manager"... We booked a room that had the extra twin bunk (shoulda gotten the king)... Absolutely not a hotel for a working professional... I normally like a dry towel after I shower, but not here... ...We get there and immediately get attention from the bar asking us if we want to get drinks... We asked a couple sitting if they mind if we played a game, and they politely moved to the couch behind so we could sit down... Until now, I felt like everything was all good and normal, but when we get the next request to buy drinks, my impression of this place changed... Either the Robey doesn't pay their bartenders enough money to work there or their company culture is no longer interested in providing hospitality to customers, rather looking at how much money they can squeeze from them... Here we are as adults in a lounge we've been to many times where we have been good customers... On this day, however, we're getting harassed by a mediocre bartender we haven't been buying from him... As a hospitality professional, I understand the job but this was unacceptable... It made us feel uncomfortable to be customers... I expected a higher level of service from such a great place...

I have stayed here on two different occasions in the last two months because my father passed away and I have had to fly in and out of Chicago several times for his funeral and executor duties. On each of the last two trips I decided to spend a little more than I usually would because my life is hard and I miss my dad and I wanted a nice room. Both times I have paid almost $400 a night for a room and both times I have been put on one of the lowest possible floors. This last time I upgraded to a supposedly nicer corner room where great views of the city were promised. Maybe you get those nice views on the upper floor. However, on the lower floors your view is crappy (see attached photos). You have big windows showing you big views of cars very close to you on the street below (which you will also get to hear, since the windows can't block the noise very well when you are so close to the street), a bunch of junk and garbage under the L, an abandoned bank, and stuff like that. It is a bad view. I am sad I am closer to it with big windows looking out on it. The main takeaway is if you are flying in and are not here at 3, you will get a crap room on a low floor. My flight has come in at 6 PM both nights and it appears if you get in any time after mid afternoon you will be stuck on a low crap floor for the same price as all the people getting a great view and not staring at traffic, abandoned banks, and garbage under the L. When we checked in my husband reiterated we would like the highest floor possible (which we also put in the reservation) and the nice young man at the front desk started a long story about because Biden was doing some event in china that put a strain on the San Francisco airport and many people had stayed over--which was the prelude to revealing we once again had a very low floor and a crap room. He kindly said but really all the views are great. While he is kind, what he said is untrue. It doesn't make you feel better to pay almost 400 getting a crap low floor room to have someone tell you it is actually a good view. The counter factual reality is a little maddening to hear. I did admire the young woman I got a long close up view of waiting for the bus for half an hour while reading a book in the cold in the failing light. My husband and I thought It was kind of hilarious that Biden, China and San Francisco were being blamed for our crap view in a Chicago hotel despite the high price and website promises. Maybe that works with right wingers. I guess the logic of the person's statement was that because something happened at an airport in San Francisco our long made reservation didn't matter. We had to have a far worse room than we normally would get because people needed to stay there instead of going back to San Francisco at the last minute, I'm not quite sure why that means we would have to have the lowest crap floor, and they would get the highest because of this but there it is And in the days leading up to this I received a phone call a text and email messages asking if I was really going to stay there. At the time I thought it was because I had had to change an earlier reservation but now I realize it was probably because they were trying to get more rooms for people other than me who matter more. There are some nice things about this hotel: it has black out drapes and is well maintained and has old school style. The guy at the front desk was nice if maddeningly wrong about our too expensive room havng a nice view. Yeah you just got a really bad room but let's be cheery about it! After all you're the one who has to pay the same high rate for the crappy room so we might as well act like It's GREAT!. Not enough to make up for tiny bathrooms with crappy shower and no tub, a lot of noise on the low floors, and not enough light in the room to read a book once you have turned them all on. My big point is: they should charge less for the corner kings on Floors 7 and lower. People on floors 8-14 may have a nice view. I will never know, because I have only been put on the 4th floor and the 3rd floor--since the lobby is first floor and the lounge is on the second this means the 800 I have paid has landed me on the lowest floor and the second lowest floor. I strongly feel anyone on the low floor should be paying $75-100 less than people on 8-14. Just be aware if you are flying in and don't have some kind of in with the hotel, unless they are really underbooked you will be stuck on a low floor and get way less for your money than other people. Their rates should reflect this and they do not. Don't be fooled like I was. Sadly though I was trying to pay more to get something nicer, I paid more to get the least nice rooms of any I stayed in during this sad fall season where I have been in Chicago hotels way too much after losing Dad. This hotel was a big disappointment. Its too much of a gamble. There is a very good chance you will pay top dollar and still be stuck on the bottom.

Response from Brittany Zasada, Sales at The Robey
Responded 2 weeks ago
Hi franktraveller, Firstly, I want to thank you for returning to the Robey for your second trip into the area. My truest and deepest condolences go out to you and your family with your father's passing, and I wish that the circumstances for your travel could have been different. I want to assure you that we pride ourselves in doing the very best to accommodate our guest's preferences and requests here at The Robey, but ultimately requests such as those made for a higher floor are based on availability and unfortunately cannot be guaranteed. As it turns out, we had many stayovers the night you stayed in the Corner Kings on the higher floors. Due to this, our team simply was not able to accommodate the request you had on file for your stay since all rooms up high were in use at that time. To add, our hotel is very small (only 89 rooms) with only one Corner King on each guest floor. With this in mind it is a fact that this room type in particular is very exclusive given it is not one of the standard rooms of which we would usually have more flexible availability. I have also taken the time to verify with our internal reservations team that while you were in fact contacted to confirm the reservation, it was done with the intention of confirming that it was valid after previous bookings/cancellations were made under your name. I was also informed by a member of the team that this intention was acknowledged by you, but regardless I truly apologize if this was not effectively communicated. Our intention was never to make you feel any less important than our other guests, but rather to make your experience as seamless as possible. Ultimately, I understand that the view from the lowest floor was not what you preferred, and I am saddened we couldn't offer another comparable alternative, but our hotel is advertised as being located in a very active area right in the middle of a busy neighborhood. Change is the one constant in large cities such as ours, with buildings going in and out of use and new projects springing up overnight at different corners and times. Unfortunately, these things are not within our power change, but I encourage you to give us another chance in the future if you ever make your way back into Wicker Park. We would love to offer you a discounted rate, and we hope to have the opportunity to turn this experience around and make your next stay a spectacular one. Please contact our reservations team at reservations@therobey.com and they will gladly assist.

Hotel's Favorite
Let me preface this review by saying: I spent most of my life in hotels for short stays due to work. Many of my friends and colleagues ask me where to stay because I’ve built a pretty good scheme to judge hotels by and rarely do I review them. Enter the Robey that was immediately so impressive I was annoyed I’d have to write them a review. This hotel sets the standard of what every other hotel in the country should be doing. Every single one of the staff here has treated me like they’ve known me for years. From the friendliest greetings to a genuine “How are you?” I have been absolutely blown away. Every last one of them have been going above and beyond to make this stay incredible and I’m just here for a quick overnight. The attention to detail in the rooms is amazing. Super comfortable beds and the down pillows are the cleanest and best shaped I’ve used in ages. Bathrooms are so clean by the way. You would think this place opened yesterday. The Up Room is not to be missed. When we arrived the front desk sent us up with a couple free drinks to use at one of their bars. We went to see the skyline instead and the views did not disappoint. Cocktails were quick from the fully stocked bar with some of the best options, delivered quickly by staff who gave us plenty of room to chill and catch up in a quiet corner of the rooftop. These people truly get it. Marriot Bonvoy typically does a good job but this is the most impressive I’ve ever seen them. My room: 1107 Skyline view and really nice exterior view to the city. Very impressive blackout curtains and plenty of room to more around and get work done. The orientation of the couch and table for getting work done along with the bed are angled for the best view while in the room. Would absolutely request this room again. The only thing I’d change about this place: The mini fridge in the room comes with two complimentary cokes (1 diet), 2 convenience size Fiji waters and two beers. I would love a full minibar though. While I love that it’s all included in the stay, had I not met up with a gentleman caller and gone out for cocktails I would have stayed in and had a couple drinks here. I have felt so at home at this property that it’s bookmarked for Chicago to use as my first priority hotel. Unless they’re sold out, I don’t intend on staying anywhere else.

We stayed at The Robey for the location but were pleasantly surprised by the excellent service from everyone in the hotel. The food was expensive but amazing, and the shower was fantastic.... I had to look up and order the shampoo & conditioner -Le Labo Santal 33 as it was excellent. It was impressive to have included in our stay and turned us onto a new company as we loved the products. Our window was right next to the Chicago transit and were concerned about noise but happy to say it did not bother us a bit. They even had a ? where you could play rain - bubbling creek or chimes - interesting! The only thing that we were not impressed with was trying to eat breakfast in the room. It was not set up to be comfortable as only one chair. The other chairs were too low. The person at the front desk said to make a point to go to the rooftop (THANK YOUI) and mentioned their squash bread was wonderful... and it was !! Overall, it was an expensive night but a very wonderful experience.

Hi eliiej, Thank you so much for the stellar 5-star review! It sounds like you covered a lot of ground while you were staying here, and we are elated to hear you had a wonderful experience both at the in-house venues and with the staff. We greatly appreciate you sharing your thoughts about the rooms features and amenities. We are happy to share Le Labo products with our guests and even offer free samples to those who stop by the storefront right beside our Milwaukee entrance. I'm also glad to see you noticed the white noise machine and the dual pane windows! They really do to help to dampen the sounds of the city. As for the dining set up in-room, we will certainly take your thoughts into account as any future renovations are considered. We truly value this kind of feedback. Thank you again, and we hope to share our beautiful hotel with you again many more times to come!

We stayed on a Sunday night. Super clean, comfortable bed, nicely decorated. We like the layout of our room. Has a sitting area. Nice use of space. It is small, but doesn’t feel cramped. Surprisingly quiet considering it is on a busy street. The rooftop bar is worth a look. The views are special. Chocolate chip cookies are available in the lobby from 4-6 pm. Delicious! Staff are friendly, helpful. The view from our room on the 7th floor was beautiful. I recommend and hope to stay here again.

Room was charming and spotless. The bed very comfy and bathroom ample. Made great use of the space, which was a bit smaller than expected and only reason this isn’t 5-star. Staff was wonderful and location great.

My family loved the hotel. The kids had an amazing time with the bunk beds. The room and bathroom were very clean. Le Labo bath products were great. Front desk staff were friendly. We cannot recommend the restaurant, Cafe Robey.

Hi katepetr0, Thanks so much for leaving us a review and sharing your thoughts about your stay! We're glad you enjoyed staying in the Annex Lofts and liked the smaller amenities like the Le Labo bath products. Le Labo actually offers free samples to our guests if you visit their store right beside our Milwaukee exit! Although you enjoyed your experience with front office, I am so sorry to hear you didn't feel the same way about the restaurant. We hope that you'll consider giving us another chance dining at the cafe if you decide to stay with us again.

If you are looking for an old, decades past its prime, overpriced hotel, this is the place for you! The rooms are postage stamp sized, especially for the price you pay. On the plus side, the rooms are clean and the staff friendly. Also, the restaurants in the building (as far as I can tell, not run or owned by the hotel) put out good food. Unless you are wedded to the Wicker Park neighborhood the hotel is located in, find a better priced hotel with more amenities and Uber/Lyft into the area

Dear 121tomash, Thanks for your feedback. Glad to hear you experienced a clean room and friendly staff. We own all of our Food & Beverage Outlets so it's great to hear you enjoyed your experience there as well. Room rates tend to be higher in peak summer months, as with all other hotels in the city. The Robey opened in 2016 and we are fortunate to be located in a historical Art Deco building. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts with us.

This hotel is a 5min walk from Blue Line coming from O’Hare. I have stayed here several times and really enjoy the Bucktown/Wicker park location. We had a delicious breakfast at Cafe Robey and enjoyed happy hour on The Rooftop and Cabana Club. There is great shopping nearby. The Bloomingdale trail is a couple blocks away-good for walking, running or bike rides.

Very comfortable stay and close to everything. We went to a Cubs game on Labor Day and got back to the hotel via bus in 25 minutes. The restaurants/bars on the premises were great. The room was on the smallish side with keyed locks that took a few tries to master. The view from the rooftop bar is amazing at night.
