Our group of 14 stayed here for 2 nights, to pay a visit to Mt Paektu and surrounding areas. The lobby and check-in area was fairly well lit and tidy. The rooms were spartan, with the beds being about 16 inches from the floor, and very hard, as was the small pillow. The flooring was made of a bamboo type material and slippers were provided for you to use while walking on them. The sinks were separate from the toilet/shower area, but neither of them had any running water. When the cold water finally came on it was a browny/red colour and not fit to drink or wash with. The rooms were clean and tidy. We were told that there would be hot water available from 6-8 PM, and 6-8 AM for showers. It was available then, but only warm. Our first night there, we were getting ready to go down for dinner, and the lights went out all over the annex where we were located. They were off for perhaps 10 minutes, so make sure you take a flashlight with you and keep it handy at all times. The food was good, and the beer cold. We got treated to a potato BBQ in the garden on the second night. A pretty good experience and the potatoes tasted OK, once you got the blackened peel off them . If you are planning to visit Mt Paektu, this is the only tourist hotel around. You will be in for an experience with the journey from the airport to the hotel with the unpaved roads. At least they had western style toilets.

OK rooms, very large, clean, thin mattress and thin pillows. No lift, stairs only, 4 stories high. No running water at all, water turned on for one hour (8pm and then 7am), but it ran out in the morning. Hot water given to you in a large thermos (we used it for coffee/tea in room). Thermos was just ‘warm’ in the morning. Fill up a bucket /or the bath with cold water to be able to flush the loo – gravity style! No electricity until 8pm (and only when the larger tour groups turned up, this seemed the routine, electricity for when the last group arrives, not the first). Hotel was very dark and gloomy. It was cold also. Lots of different tour groups here when we stayed, as we all came off the same domestic flight from Pyongyang. Dinner (served via candlelight!) was a bit average here (due to the weather /growing conditions in this mountainous area – that’s what they said anyway). Cold fish, potato, potato, potato, cold rice, kimchi, egg omelette, a frankfurt sausage thing, soup, cold noodle dish with minimal pork, and of course - warm local beer. The hotel shop sold mostly bottles of ‘a red grape grappa’ wine or clear spirits, no beer, but soft drinks (all warm as electricity runs sparingly). A tour group of Russian tourists downed many bottles of this red grape wine and they did not seem very cheerful the next morning (apparently it keeps you warm!?). Breakfast offering was white bread, fried egg, small coffee (or tea), jam, tomato and onion. You’ll visit Mt. Paekdu (it really wasn’t that amazing) Chonji Lake, Rimyongsu Falls, Kim Jong II’s Native Home, Lake Samji and monuments in Samjiyon. Hint: bring a head torch / torch, card games.

The hotel is very nice. I was impressed by the rooms. Very big and full of appliances! (TV, fridge, radio, many lights etc...). Too bad that usually there's not electricity in this province. I was amazed by the fact that, on top of the big room, there was also a very large living rooms with a desk and two comfy chairs. The bathroom is nice and big, with expensive Toto fixtures. Too bad that when there's no electricity there's also no running water... (but the staff fills the tub with water and gives you a bucket). The big bar on the second floor is amazing. Spending the evening over there with all the areas lit by candles is a wonderful experience.
