Detailed Reviews
This ranch, its people and its horses are just wonderful and hard to beat. Very well organized, great hospitality, best and safe horses ever, committed and inspiring cowboys, good food and accommodation in a gorgeous landscape.
This was real cowboy and girls work every day- a lot of riding, finding and pushing cows - real adventure.
I will be coming back !

My husband and I booked for next year before we left for home at the end of our week at McGarry Ranches. Amazing people, gorgeous countryside and wonderful horses. This was an authentic cowboy/ranch experience.
We can’t wait to come back!!!

This is an excellent working cattle ranch. The food is great and plenty of it. Theron and Jean and their ranch hands really take care of the guests. Cabins are very clean and so is the shower house. All the equipment and horses are top notch. I had a great week chasings cows.
Theron and Dirk are pros at selecting the right horses. I say horses because you will ride 2-3 different ones during the week. The riding can challenging at times but it is a great experience. They only take up to ten guests for the week so you get a lot of help if you need it. The only drawback is that if you are a solo traveler you might have to share a room with another guest.

To be fair up front I will say this is not a review of the experience this ranch has to offer because I never made it there so I'll explain the low review. I contacted them the end of last year (21) asking about openings for summer of 22, and asked several specific questions about the ranch and the kind of riding they had to offer and general questions about the experience. I was put off a bit because it took over a month to hear anything back and the tone of the response was unfriendly bordering rude. I was informed they could not take our group in 22 but I could talk to them next year about a visit in 23. None of my questions were answered or acknowledged and the tone of the email was very curt. I could get over that because everyone has days they are rushed or distracted but I would have thought someone wanting you to give them business would be eager to give as much information as they could. But my real problem comes later. Early this year I got a letter about the owners of this ranch that talked about how the husband is cheating on the wife with a guest and how people saw them around the city and at the ranch doing "private" things together and how the owners are trying to cover it up. It was written by someone who saw the husband and girlfriend going into a hotel for a tryst and they sent copies of messages they had sent the wife and their children and other guests and the girlfriend. When I first started reading it I didn't know who it was talking about and thought maybe I had received it by mistake but as I read through it I saw the name of the ranch mentioned and realized it was one of the ones I had emailed about visiting. The huge problem I have is that for someone to have sent me this letter they had to have access to my name and information and the only way that could happen is if someone got into the ranches email since that was the only way I was in contact with them. I don't feel comfortable knowing my information is so accessible and it seems they don't protect information or take their clients privacy seriously. Unless it was written by an employee that had the right to have access to the email. Whatever the case I'm just extremely glad I wasn't to the point of giving out my credit card number because then my financial information could have been at risk too. I would be careful in any communication with them because your information may not be kept secure and private. I also don't like the thought of guests being approached and used like that by an owner and I don't have tolerance for cheating or those who allow it so maybe it's for the best we were unable to schedule here. It doesn't sound like the kind of environment I want to be involved with and I'm extremely uncomfortable about my information being left insecure like that.

I've done many ranch vacations and this was the best so far. That is if you want the real thing and not just a "dude ranch" with a couple of hours riding each day. Nothing fancy here but good clean comfortable facilities and a really warm and friendly welcome. They look after each guests individual requirements as far as the riding goes and offer as much (or little) help as you require. Great horses, great scenery, great people. I hope to return again next year.

I can't put into words how much I enjoyed my time on the ranch.
The whole family are so welcoming from the hug as you arrive through to the kids teaching me to rope (well, they tried to teach me...) Theron, Jean, Derk, Tina, Val and the extended family will go out of their way to make sure you have the best time.
They match riders to horses well and depending on how confident you feel you can get as involved with rounding up and moving cows as you like but trust me, even if you're a little hesitant on day one by the end of the week you'll be getting into the middle of the action!
The scenery is amazing, the accommodation clean and comfortable and the food is great - all good home cooked, hearty meals which you're definitely in need of by the end of the day.
I loved my time here so much that I really didn't want to leave and I booked to come back this year straight away. To stress how extraordinary that is, I've travelled a lot (Brazil, Thailand, Maldives, Australia, all over Europe and the USA) and never usually go back to the same place twice on the basis that there's so much more of the world to see but I've made an exception in this case. I've even coordinated to meet back up with some of the other guests. That's the amazing thing about this place, by the time you leave, even the other guests feel like family.
If anyone reading this is thinking about visiting McGarry Ranches then don't think any more, just give them a call and get it booked!
If you want to ask any questions about what to expect or pack then just drop me a line :-)
Also, I don't know "97140Traveler" but read their review too - I'd agree with every word of it.

From the second I was picked up by Theron at Idaho Falls airport to the round of tearful goodbyes on the following Sunday morning, I felt like I had found a home away from home. I've been to a few dude ranches and resorts before, but nothing, and I mean nothing, even comes close to this place in terms of hospitality and true familial warmth. McGarry Ranches is very unique in that it truly envelops you in a home like environment where you are literally treated as a member of their family. I mean, I'm in a picture on their kitchen wall that's labeled as their "extended family"! Where else are you going to find that?!
Hailing from just outside NYC and having never been out West before, McGarry's was an eye-opener to just how much country is still present in the US. It's quiet here. Peaceful. Serene. The people are genuine; they step aside for you and cater to your needs without want of a reward. They're hardworking Americans just trying to make a living off the land. Most of the area is farmland out here, and with an elevation of just around a mile high in most places, the air is crisp and clear with low humidity. You can spread your arms, take in the scenery, and breathe out here.
From the time you wake up to the time you collapse in your bed every night, your day is jammed with adventure, laughs, and memories. You start off with one hell of a breakfast to give you energy for the day ahead, cooked by the world's most marvelous woman on Earth, Jean. Then Derk (the cowboy with an endless sense of humor) along with Val (the world's strongest, toughest, and hardworking woman) get the horses ready to be haltered and match you with a horse suitable to your riding abilities. You saddle on up, hitch the horses in the trailer, and drive up to the mountains to begin the day of herding cattle. And every day is different. Sometimes you hunt all morning just to find one pair, other times they're sitting on the side of the road just waiting to be rounded up. And you can do as much or as little as you want. You want to ride off in the trees to get a lost calf? Go for it! Once done with the day, you take the best shower of your life, eat an amazing dinner again cooked by Jean (with the help of her family), chat, and fall asleep at the kitchen table because you're so wiped out.
All in all, words don't do justice in praise of McGarry Ranches. It was the best experience of my life to be a part of their family for a week, and I can't wait to go back and do it all again soon enough. A HUGE thank you to all of the family for making me feel like one of your own :)

I have been to many ranches throughout the US - not one compares top Mcgarry ranches. There are MULTIPLE reasons. 1. The horses are the best I've ever ridden, and the ranch owners take such good care of them. I've been to the ranch multiple times and every single horse I've ridden has been literally outstanding. 2. The people - these wonderful ranch family members are the most hospitable, caring, kind, exceptional people - they are such hard workers and they give this ranch, and the guests, their all so that every single person leaves smiling (as well as devastated to be leaving). The food - they have the most wonderful chef, Paulina, who could actually work in a five star restaurant - I have never tasted food this good!!! The setting - riding in the gorgeous idaho mountains, along the snake river and among gorgeous trees and wildflowers - there's no better place to be, or to ride, in all of the US. The riding - because the horses are so outstanding, and there is plenty of cattle work to be done - this is a thrilling one-of-a kind riding experience, perfect for very advanced riders, or for people who like to hang back and take in the exceptional scenery. I have never written a review before - but because this family goes out of their way to foster the most wonderful ranch experience, I felt it was finally time for me to express myself with a post. The only problem with McGarry ranch - for all of the reasons I've listed, among others, it's impossible to motivate to go to other ranches once one has been here - because any other ranch experience would seem truly disappointing. Thank you to the McGarry family for enhancing my life in the way you have.

The best thing about the Ranch was the people! The McGarry Family is amazing. So welcoming and friendly! All meals were homemade & delicious. The bathrooms are a few steps across the yard to the mess hall. My husband & I were assigned a bathroom that was used just by us for the week. Very clean, great shower, heater warmed the bathroom quickly on cool mornings. My husband loves the "adrenalin rush" of chasing cattle through the brush on horseback. I am a novice rider & though I learned & became somewhat more confident as the week progressed, an experienced rider would have a much better time. Everyone was very patient and kind with me, my heart was in it buy my skills were not. The staff & other guests were delightful, we would readily do this trip again!
