Absolutely loved this hotel! It was so sweet and charming. But by far the best part was how homey it felt. It was so nice that their kitchen is stocked with drinks, snacks and a yummy breakfast. I loved going in to get fresh brewed coffee in the morning and sitting in the "living room" to enjoy my coffee. The breakfast options were great for eating in or taking togo! Will definitely stay here again when I am back in town!

No expense was spared in the interior decor from the furnishings to the paintings to the light fixtures to the large over sized windows and 10 ft ceilings. Room 3 was very well cooled during the heat wave. Breakfast and coffee were good. Floors are well insulated because we did not hear anyone on third floor. King bed is comfortable if you prefer a softer bed. Waterfall shower was nice. Nice quiet location within walking distance of downtown.

Felt very accommodated during our stay. The room was so beautiful. We stayed in room 6 and absolutely loved the arrangement. The room had a complimentary bottle of wine when we arrived and adorable features like a towel just for face makeup in the bathroom. The manager was very helpful and kind. In the morning there was a breakfast available, buffet style. The food was AMAZING. My partner and I enjoyed our meal on the patio outside in the sunshine. I wish we could have stayed more than just the one night! Definitely will be returning. Loved every minute and everything about this boutique hotel.

First, the good. The house is a super cute renovated old Victorian mansion with amazing ambiance. Seriously, the architecture is just stunning, the furniture is cool and their front lobby area is awesome. The manager seemed pleasant and the rest of the staff seemed nice as well. The breakfast was really good continental style with some fresh made options (but staff are not wearing facial coverings or gloves FYI - eat at your own risk).
Unfortunately, the rest of our experience wasn’t so awesome. The room we booked (it was the last available on the dates we wanted and now I know why) was #6, the view from the top. It’s the attic of the house and the bathroom has no shower. That would have been ok, but the bed was HORRIBLE!! I’m youngish and in fairly good shape but this mattress was as hard as a rock and it made my legs go numb. I just could not sleep on this bed. Additionally, there were someone else’s hairs all over the comforter, yuck. My husband also had to kill a wasp that came into our room, since they are old house windows that have gaps in them when closed.
The crowning moment was the yelling match that happened outside the house on the street at 2am our second night. The house sits on one of the main roads in the area so drunken interactions like this are apparently common. It’s just not a quiet place at all, despite the house rules for quiet hours- it won’t matter if the people on the street are loud and disorderly.
No elevator, so pack light if you are staying on the 3rd floor!
Also, as we were leaving, there was a gentleman staying at the hotel who apparently had his car crashed into over night. There is only street parking at this establishment, so something else to consider, if you drive an expensive car.
I so badly wanted to love this hotel, and perhaps I would have if our room wasn’t so terrible. I recommend the hotel focus on overhauling this room completely or charge 25% less for it.

Response from Calie Wendlandt, Owner at Blackwell Boutique Hotel
Responded Jan 22, 2021
I am so sorry for the terrible experience. :-( I'll reach out to you this coming week and see how I can make this better. Again, I am so sorry! Room 6 is a little tough with just having the clawfoot tub without the shower. It's on our list of to-dos for renovating in the next year. As for the bed, we will look at other options as well. it's a sleep by number and sometimes can be confusing to use. As far as the screaming match outside...those can happen and unfortunately, 2 am seems to be the time. UGH! We have since made changes in regards to staff wearing masks full-time and wearing gloves when handling food. Hopefully, you will give us another try. Warmest regards, Calie

Consider your health and safety before staying at this hotel. We stayed here for one night in early October and despite the huge increase in COVID-19 cases in Idaho (Kootenai County in which this hotel is located was #4 on the list for most cases and deaths), the owner and manager were doing nothing to protect the safety of guests and even their own staff. We were the only ones wearing face coverings at the hotel (including others who were seniors), there was no sanitizer available, and breakfast was cooked with no face coverings or gloves. It made us wonder if the housekeeping staff were sanitizing rooms properly between guests, as is the norm for the large hotel chains right now. Particularly in a hotel establishment, with travelers/strangers passing through from near and far outside the area, safety measures should be a must. Other establishments in town, such as Bardenays Restaurant, were requiring face coverings and being respectful of people's health.

My husband and I stayed here on a weekend trip to the lake. The location is great (walking distance to downtown). The style of the B&B was very fun. The room was comfortable and had everything we needed and the breakfast was delicious. The only reason I am rating this as average is because of the hospitality. The guests are made to fill out a comprehensive check on online. You are then asked 3 times, 3 different ways if you want your room actually cleaned (answer yes all 3xs I am paying 250 a night please do your job). I also received multiple texts saying we couldn't check in early when I didn't even ask to check in early. It was overall a very mediocre experience because of those factors and this is why I may look to stay somewhere else if we come back.

We had two rooms on the topmost floor of this beautiful restored home. The rooms are small but very comfortable with semi-firm beds and perfect pillows (a MUST for me!) The shower/bathroom (located across the hall from my room) was so charming. They provided very nice shampoo, conditioner, and lotion, fluffy towels and cozy bathrobes. Our hostess, Brook, was kind and accommodating. Breakfasts were filling and delicious. Parking was sufficient. The lake is only a 5 minute drive down the street. Should we have the pleasure of visiting Couer d'Alene in the future, we will again book a stay at the Blackwell!

We stayed in one of the Carriage Houses. Very nice, neat, and clean. The only minor complaint was that the air conditioning unit was too noisy. The breakfast was marvelous on both mornings. Merridith, the manager, as well as the rest of the staff were very helpful, and always ready to meet our needs, however small. Parking is in a residential neighborhood and close to the downtown area as well as the Interstate. Bed and breakfast units are a little pricey, but when you consider not having to put up with the hotel environment the cost is not much more, and well worth it. I would highly recommend staying at the Black Boutique Hotel. J.

This is an old mansion converted to a hotel. So, each room is different than other. We stayed in the mansion fireplace suite for 1 night and our stay was very comfortable. The room was very cozy with all needed ameneties. The location of the hotel is very convenient to the Coeur D'Alene lake, restaurants etc. The customer service is Excellent. Although the check-in is during a limited window of time, they make sure that they provide detailed instructions for late check-ins etc. The service provided for breakfast was very nice and personal. Would highly recommend this place.

This was our third stay at the Blackwell. This time we booked 3 separate rooms and each one was different, but clean, cozy and beautiful. The bed mattress was exceptional. The breakfast included many choices and all of our adult children were happy. They even made us gluten free pancakes! There are late night snacks and easy access to refreshments too. The decor of the historic house was modern and it was fun to explore. Our adult kids really enjoyed the game/movie room downstairs and the towels for the hot tub were appreciated. We will definitely be back.

No, there is not a restaurant on site. However there are several wonderful restaurants a short walk from the Blackwell.
No we do not have an elevator but our staff are happy to assist in taking luggage to your room.
On a room by room basis. Ours had it although not needed.
