We drove up to Makakatana from Durban in about 2.5 hours and had no trouble finding the lodge with wonderful directions, passing warthogs, wildebeests and rhinos along the way. We were greeted with homemade lemonade and shown our rooms. We had 2 rooms with 2 adults and 1 child in each room. The rooms were very spacious with beautiful decks... More

My husband and I stayed for 2 nights last month and during our stay over 140 cms of much needed rain fell. Despite the weather we had a wonderful stay. The staff were amazing (especially Stephanie), the food delicious, our room was of a very high standard and we saw and heard a number of animals from our verandah. Our... More

It is amazing how happy people attract happy experiences! Often the rain dampens an experience, however we were so appreciative of positive attitudes which always ends up with laughter and love! The wetlands certainly came alive after the rains with so much new life and celebrations. Thank you for staying with us and sharing your wonderful energy! More

I had no idea what to expect from Makakatana Lodge when it was offered to me through a silent auction bid for a charity. I design one- of- a- kind custom safari adventures in every country in Africa, but until this trip (which was a personal one), I was unfamiliar with the St. Lucia, Zulu Nyala area of So. Africa.... The fact that you absorbed your moments with us and cherished your time with us means a lot. We look forward to welcoming your clients... More

The one thing you don't want when visiting a safari lodge is building work and unfortunately on arrival this place had a lot of it going on. At the very least we should have been aware of it so we could have been prepared (or more likely booked somewhere else). After one night we threatened to abandon our stay but... More

Dear Peter, We do appreciate your response and again apologise for the noise on your day of arrival. We are very grateful that you accepted our apologies and gave us a chance to sort it out. You should not have been exposed to this and this should not have slipped through our watch. Our two new rooms will be completed... More

Just finished a four day stay. Great accommodations and dining. The staff is very helpful and adapted immediately to several changes we had to make in our itinerary. Great wildlife drives day and night.

We spent three days at Makakatana in April and had a great and relaxed time. Makakatana was the second stop on a 4 week African safari experience through four countries. The lodge is the only one in a very large reserve. Each of the separate cabins have porches with views across the wetlands - a great place to sit with... More

We had a very nice short break in an excellent Lodge. Fantastic game rides and boat trip. Friendly staff. Game came right up to our balcony. Knowledgeable game ranger. Good kitchen and good facilities. Wifi needs improving.

From the time you arrive at the lodge, and are welcomed by their friendly and hospitable staff you realize you are in a special place. This is confirmed when you are taken along the walkway to your secluded room. Room 5 has a great view of the bay (look out for passing wildlife). The meals were varied and well presented,... More

The second lodge of our holiday and a lovely lay out with a huge welcoming lounge/dining/meeting area and roundels along little pathways hidden in the trees as the accommodation. I highly recommend the Makakatana Bay Lodge. Hugh, the owner and all of the staff make sure their guests are well taken care of. The cabins are spacious and well kept.
