#3 of 3 B&Bs / Inns in Santa Rosa Beach
Travelers' Choice
WaterColor Inn, nestled on nearly 500 acres of sugar-white sand beach, is surrounded by 1,400 linear feet of beachfront and pine forests alongside Western Lake, the state’s second-largest naturally occurring coastal dune lake. The 60-room Inn offers deluxe accommodations designed by David Rockwell, each overlooking the Gulf of Mexico and donning a pair of Adirondack chairs on the patio (and on the first floor, a private outdoor cabana shower). Perfectly encapsulating the spirit of an intimate beach getaway—while providing the functionality necessary for a family vacation—the freshly redecorated beachfront rooms bring the outdoors in, mere footsteps from the sand. From the soft linens to the spa-inspired toiletries, every well-appointed room offers a relaxing and comfortable seaside oasis. Dining options include FOOW (formerly Fish Out of Water), a family-friendly restaurant serving fresh, locally-inspired Southern cuisine in a coastal-casual setting with stunning Gulf views and an expansive indoor/outdoor bar. At The Gathering Spot, located adjacent to the hotel lobby, guests can enjoy a casual meal in a laid back, beach-house setting, featuring inventive bowl-themed entrees and a Build-Your-Own Martini selection – providing guests the opportunity to experiment with flavors. At WaterColor Inn, all guests enjoy access to the new Camp WaterColor (completed Spring 2019), featuring a zero-entry pool with slide, a small children's pool with slide, a lazy river, playground and basketball court, as well as The Canteen Restaurant and Bar. Additionally, the newly expanded WaterColor Beach Club now boasts a new main pool with expanded seating and lounge areas, the new Rita Bar and a newly designed welcome reception area. When the final phase of the expansion is completed (anticipated to be Spring 2020), guests will also be able to enjoy a second pool deck with additional lounge seating and a third pool with zero-entry, in addition to an enlargement of the iconic WaterColor Grill and a brand-new casual fast-dining option, aptly named Beach Cow. Managed by St. Joe Hospitality, this distinctive hotel property affords guests access to a bevy of the private membership club’s amenities including complimentary use of bicycles, kayaks, canoes, discounted stand-up paddle board rentals, access to two nearby private golf clubs (Camp Creek & Shark's Tooth), and more.

We are staying here right now. I have to say the rooms are very nice and comfortable! Definitely go for a room on the 4th floor if you want a good view of the ocean. The pools are very nice & service good. The only problem I have with the hotel is the beach chairs and umbrellas! They say you need to rent these in advance. Don’t waste your money renting one of these if you care anything about social distancing! Your neighbor is right on top of you! You cannot adjust your shade at all! Other than that, I recommend this place! They leave cookies for you each night!

The location is wonderful but access to the Watercolor Beach Club is perfect. And if this hotel did not provide you access to that Beach Club, you would be very disappointed that you paid so much for staying here. We stayed here years ago and we thought it was a really 4-5 star experience. But this time, not so much. The dated lobby reminds one of an old Florida motel. The room, with the shower in the middle, was probably revolutionary at one time. Now it just looks weird. There is a wet bar in the room but big whip. Update everything instead. It's time for a major renovation. Don't get me wrong; the view of the gulf is beautiful, but for the price that you are paying, the room should match the view. The Beach Club that you have access to as a guest is the key and the only reason why we would stay here again. A beautiful pool with amenities such as clean bathrooms, shade and restaurant & bar along with direct access to the beach. If you have young kids, this place is for you. One thing the hotel will not tell you for first timers. You do NOT have to rent the pricy beach chairs. If you get there on the early side, you can go west of the chairs about 100 feet from the resort and place your own chair and umbrella saving you hundreds. You can get as close to the water as you like. If you want to be closer to the Beach Club with your own chair, then just park it behind the row or two of the resort's chairs. One more thing...they claim to be a luxury resort, but a luxury resort would not have their service door open constantly for all to see. Every time we went to our room, we had to look at their mess....see the picture. As far as service, it was uneven. The bell people were fabulous, front desk on and off but the people working at Fish Out of Water need to get some friendly Disney juice in them. It's like they hated their lives.

This was our 6 visit to the Watercolor Inn. We have been with our toddler, grandmothers, and this time as a quick couples getaway. We always enjoy our stay. The hotel is lovely and staff is great. Randy at the front desk was extremely helpful. It was busier than expected (for a Thursday night during Covid), but a great stay nonetheless.

I had high hopes going into this trip. I used to visit this area when there was nothing there, and I had heard how awesome everything is with all the development. The hotel itself is lovely. There is a strange atmosphere, but maybe that is due to COVID? The staff were friendly, and the bellman (who also parked my car for me) was very sweet and helpful. Lots of shops are within walking distance. There are a few restaurants within immediate walking distance and more within 3/4 mile. I'm fine to walk that far, but I know some people would not be OK with that in the heat of the gulf coast. Our room, on the ground floor, was well-appointed and very comfortable. The bed was comfortable, and the air conditioner worked great...very important. As for the pool and beach, I was put off. I had been bragging to my friends who accompanied us about the beautiful gulf beaches, but because they were so crowded at the inn's beach, you couldn't really tell how pretty the beach should have been. And the beach club pool? Get there early if you want a chair in summer, because people save chairs all day and come back when they want...management does nothing to discourage that. I was fine on the day we went, because we went early enough to get chairs, but we saw lots of disappointed folks. By 1:00, the whole pool deck was so crowded, we left. It just wasn't pleasant with that many people around. We ordered drinks, and after waiting 45 minutes, we canceled the order and went back to our rooms. I remember the days when this stretch of beach was lovely. Sadly, we won't return. I know lots of people love it, but if you don't love crowds everywhere you go, this is not the place for you. Also...the concept of traveling by bike all over the resort is a lovely concept, but it becomes annoying if you are walking. If you want a nice, pretty, quiet beach, do not go here. If you're up for the crowds, this might be your place. I gave it 4/5 rating simply because the inn itself is lovely, and our room was well-appointed. The staff was very sweet, as well. We rented a townhouse inside Watercolor Resort for a few days after being at the inn for a few days, and the resort area around the townhouse was quiet and less crowded, but since they all use the same amenities, the pool/beach situation was the same.

This was a great choice for a getaway for a couple of nights. We very much enjoyed a fourth floor ocean view room especially since it rained one day. We were quite content to sit on the balcony and watch the storm. This allowed us to see the beach over the dunes. All staff were helpful and quite careful with COVID precautions. Amenities provided were great. Well appointed room and bathroom. I look forward to going back another time.
