I've been coming to Sanibel Island for 44 years. I always drive by these cottages and say how cute they look and one day I want to stay there. So this week we finally did. But to my disappointment, the cottages were Not what I hoped for.. They need a fresh update. Room was warm even though it had 2window ac units. The decor looked like the 80's. If these cottages were remodeled, they would be adorable. But they are stuck in the last century. It's not that they weren't clean, just uninviting. Our bedroom had one wall that looked like someone kicked their foot Into it. That should have been repaired. The shower was so tiny that I don't know how a larger person could shower in it. I'm a small woman, and I felt claustrophobic I also was disappointed in the location. I thought the cottage would be on the beach, but it was actually across the street. That's my bad bcuz it probably said it somewhere in the reservations. We got a pool view since the ocean view was not available. But there was no pool view. It was across the parking lot from our room and up above ground so you could not even see it from the room. For $255 a night, I just expected more. We were there with another couple that had never been to Sanibel before. They said they loved Sanibel and would definitely come back. Just would not choose to stay there again. I agree..

I stayed here last weekend and as was extremely disappointed in the conditions of the room for the money I was charged for a one-night stay ($300). The bathroom walls and other walls in the room were dirty and worn. The chairs in the room were dirty. The shower had 2 shower heads in it one on each side – one ran lukewarm and one ran cold – there was no place to set your shampoo or soap except on the floor. Additionally, I had worms crawly on the curtains above my head in bed. The pillows are old and flat and need to be replaced. When I asked if there any better rooms, I was told to look online, which I found humorous, as I looked online for this room and this was not what I expected. Strongly recommend against wasting your money for these motel accommodations. I contacted the Castaway in an email expressing my concerns and sent them photos of all my concerns and had no response from them.

The web site advertises “ Old Florida Charm with the wants and needs for today's travelers for comfort, style and amenities''. The pictures shared on their web site do not accurately reflect the current state of Castaway's . We definitely experienced " old" Florida ,but it was not charming and no where near what I would classify as a resort. In the first 2 hours of our arrival we met and spoke to 2 couples who had spent time in the past at Castaways. The first couple were there to spread their parents ashes in the bay. They told my husband that they were in for 24 hours and out, their goal was to complete what the parents had requested and leave, " the place is really run down" not like it used to be. The second couple said they used to vacation at Castaways but started going to Costa Rica instead. It was only because of COVID that they were back at Castaways again they commented - " the place is not what it used to be". That was a heck of a way to start our stay at Castaways. Sadly it got worse, we arrived on Tuesday the pool bottom was full of sand and in bad need of being cleaned - it was finally on Thursday that my husband saw a gentleman cleaning the pool. I realize it's hard to keep a pool clean that's opposite a road and across from the gulf, but don't advertise the establishment as a resort with a dirty pool. One way to keep the pool clean is to have a shower that is not full of sand. The shower located at the pool is full of vegetation overgrowth and sand. Removal of the vegetation and the addition of a small platform could clearly help cut down the amount of sand going into your pool. The pool also had a yellow safety ribbon around the ladder at the deep end - it looked like it had been there for weeks. The umbrella broke, the grounds were unkept and the plants looked neglected. The chairs in the laundry were filthy as were the washers. There was dirt in the cabinets of our efficiency. The furniture in our efficiency was stained, I had to cover the cushions with towels from the pool area to feel comfortable enough to sit down. The place overall looks nasty. We will not be returning to the Castaways Beach and Bay Cottages.

I know we are all glad to get back outside after Covid but what i saw at the Castaways Cottages was upsetting, people are pigs, food left out on the tables in the courtyard to the pool towels and Trash left all around the grounds of the resort without any one to supervise or cleanup the area. we could not use the tables because of the litter left everywhere. It was Easter weekend and the place was booked up. But that's no excuse not to have a staff member trying to clean up after these people. Come on we paid good money to use the pool and patio area and couldn't and wouldn't. And now the Cottages on the east side of the road were very Clean but the sofa and fridge should be on the curb for the next trash pickup. Covered the sofa with a blanket because of the dirt. and fridge was old, loud, and scary, could be replaced with a new dorm fridge for a few hundred dollars. Resort is located in the best spot for shelling and great beach access. Hopefully you use this review to make your resort a cleaner and more user friendly to us all. Thank You

We are spoiled. Stayed in cabins across the road many times in the last 12 years. Stayed in Cabin 2 this summer on the beach and loved it. The cabin needs care and this Christmas we stayed there again. The sliding glass door needs to be replaced as does the porch screen door. We had a roach problem but they came and sprayed.
