Travelers' Choice
Once described as perhaps the finest home in all of Florida, the stunning Major Sherman Conant house is now a magnificent Bed & Breakfast. Circa 1884, this 3 story, 8 bedroom, 6.5 bath home is an extraordinary example of Queen Anne architecture by famed New England architect Rufus Sargent. With twelve foot ceilings, a grand staircase and a sweeping veranda, guests luxuriate in rooms steeped in American history. One block to the St. Johns River, 30 minutes to St. Augustine and 45 minutes to Gainesville. Rent one of our individual rooms on a nightly basis or rent the entire INN! Yes, that's right. On the nights that no other guests have reserved rooms, you may rent the entire INN. See our website for details. When renting the entire Inn, guests have full use of the kitchen and dining areas so "breakfast" is not served by the Inn keepers.

What a gem! My husband and I LOVE staying at B&Bs and in 35 years, I cannot even count how many we have stayed at, from Napa Valley, Hawaii, and even in Ireland, plus many places in between! Our son was getting married, so we made arrangements to rent the entire home for all of our out of town guests. In preparing for our son's wedding in Palatka, our daughter and I drove down from Destin for the bridal shower two weeks prior and asked to stay there then as well. Tate and Jessie were amazing, as was Rocky, the cutest pup we have ever seen!! We felt like old friends from the first time we met. When they said to make yourself at home, we had already felt that we were home. In this day of COVID and the worries that staying in a hotel brings, the thought never crossed our mind that there would be an issue. The place, although very period correct and lots of lovely furniture, draperies, etc. just felt and was, clean. The breakfasts were made to order and delicious! Both Tate and Jessie are very outgoing and friendly and Tate puts on a wonderful tour of this spectacular home! He is so informative and the story of the home is amazing! Palatka is a beautiful small town in Florida, not far from St Augustine, Gainsville, and Jacksonville. Well worth getting out of the city, driving a few extra miles, and enjoying a walk along the banks of the historical St Johns river. A must stay in my opinion!!

We arrived after dark and you could see the house from a distance because of the lights. This house and the antiques are beautiful, the room comfortable, breakfast tasty. We enjoyed the rocking chairs on the porch. The breakfast attendant/cook very nice and helpful. Kept me in coffee! The inn and innkeepers are known in this small town, with good reputations. If you are able take the tour offered in the morning of the house. Very enlightening. The rooms were clean, comfortable.

What a find. I am so, so glad we found this place. It just popped up while trawling Google for things to do between St Augustine and Crystal River. We had the most gorgeous stay, wonderfully looked after by the family, and best of all, the tour! Wow! Hearing about the mysterious history of the house and listening to Tate tell, as he says, “the narrative of the house,” was so special. We are history buffs with particular interest in social history and architecture so it was perfect. I feel a little emotional to be honest as I remember Tate’s obvious passion for his home and his commitment to being a part of the gradual restoration of the town of Palatka after a long period of economic difficulty. The whole nearby Florida historic district is worth a stroll thru during the day as well. Tate also recommended some great local shops to visit such as Elsie Belle’s antiques. May good things come to all at the Grand Gables, and thanks for showing us Aussie’s such a great time.

Thank you so very much for your kind and gracious review! We thoroughly enjoyed meeting and speaking with you while you were at the Inn. It is meeting travelers like you that makes inn-keeping such a wonderful experience, and an equally great experience for our other guests. I was especially impressed with your depth of knowledge of American history and culture. We wish you all the best! Safe travels and keep in touch. Tate

Stayed two nights for business. Compared this place to the decent hotel options in town & it was a no-brainer to pick Grand Gables. Breakfast was very good. Coffee on the veranda was a nice touch. There was even a resident cat to make sure all of my porch needs were being met as I sat out enjoying some perfect fall weather.
