The Freehand Miami is the PERFECT hostel and place to stay in Miami. Before arriving I was hesitant to stay in a hostel as it would be my first American hostel. Well I have to tell you - it has pretty much everything you could need. Check-in was a breeze, they provide a daily parking pass for street parking for $11 a day (good until the following day until 11am), there was plenty of street parking, it's on a quiet block right near a beautiful canal. The rooms had lockers (although mine couldn't lock) and each bunk had sheets, a blanket, a pillow and a little cubby with a light and outlet to charge your phone at night. There were little chairs and tables with storage for your things and a little walk in closet to hang clothes and change (although a privacy curtain would have been nice). There was a TV and AC in the room. The bathroom was fully stocked with (really nice) shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, and hand soap and there was a hair dryer. There was also a couple of toilets down the hall in case your bathroom was occupied and you had to go.

The pool is really cute, I didn't have to, but I think they loan beach/pool towels, they sell bottles of water at the reception desk, looked like they sold flip flops and beach bags, there are about 7 bicycles that you can take out for 2 hours at a time ($5 per hour after that).

The location is great - a couple blocks from the boardwalk and beach (like 2 blocks literally) about a 10 minute walk from restaurants and about 15 minutes to the main drag on Collins.

Suffice to say I showed up with WAY more than I needed to and Freehand has everything you need. HIGHLY recommend.

Short version: great restaurant, great bar(s), great location. Skip staying here overnight and just get drinks and food. ESPECIALLY if you're a light sleeper.

I think this place markets itself inaccurately, but if it changed its marketing, could be great. Their site makes it seem like a glam trendy hotel (with $$$ private room prices to match.) It's really a nice hostel with a few private rooms. I can't speak to the shared/dorm room experience, but the private king room was underwhelming (especially for the price I paid).

I had originally requested a quiet room since I'm a light sleeper and they said they were happy to accommodate. When I arrived, I reminded the man checking me in about the quiet room request. He then checked me into LITERALLY the loudest room on the entire property (maybe out of spite?) The window looked out directly on to the patio bar and was directly above a speaker that plays loud music 24/7. It also shared a wall with the bar's women's restroom.

Once I realized how loud it was, I asked the front desk if there were any quieter rooms, and got a really rude response. They laughed at me and said none of the rooms were quiet, but offered to show me a room in a different part of the property to see if it would be quieter. Lo and behold, it was! I couldn't hear any of the outside noise and that night I slept like a baby. I'm not sure why they didn't book me in this room in the first place, but was happy that they were able to accommodate me once I said something. I did not appreciate the rudeness though.

Both king private rooms were dirty (the floor looked like it hadn't been cleaned and when I walked in I stepped on a pair of broken sunglasses on the floor.) Air conditioners are LOUD but I appreciate that they have them. No coffee machines in the rooms, but there's a shared kitchen where you can get hot water, etc. Bed and linens were comfortable.

Location of the property is perfect, and I had great experiences at the restaurant and bar with excellent service and hospitality. Would not recommend staying here unless you don't mind a lot of noise and dirty rooms, but would definitely recommend for drinks and a bite to eat.

Thank you so much for staying with us, and for taking the time to leave your feedback. I am so sorry that you didn't have a better experience with your guest room, and that your initial request for a quiet room had not been honored. Enjoyed this hotel, had a private room that was comfortable and quiet. It was on the second floor but there were no lights on in the stairway at night... kinda scary going up and down the stairs in the dark. Check in was REALLY SLOW. Only one guy at the desk and a long line to check in. I asked what we should do with our car and was told we had to park on the metered street, for three days! That night another guest at the hotel told me that I could get a parking pass for the lot around the corner for $10 for 24 hours. What! Why didn't the guy at the desk tell me that. Honestly felt that it was one more thing for him to have to do so he couldn't bother. The staff was really friendly though and very accommodating. The bartenders were super friendly and fun. We ate at the restaurant, very small portions but the place was pretty and the staff very friendly. Fun pool scene, but they could have had servers coming around to see if guests wanted drinks or snacks. Loved that they had a communal kitchen where you could store food and drinks. Overall a great place, just needs some service upgrades.

Tried to pay the remaining room balance in cash when I arrived but they didn't have change. They asked if I was ok to not get the $70 back in change I was owed.  What????

2 TVs in the room neither of which worked. No outlets in the bathroom

You can easily see right into the rooms through the side of the curtains so beware of peepers.

Sat out by the poolside one night where there is a bar and lounge area. One of the staff came and told us that we needed to leave. We told them that we were guest staying. The staff proceeded to ask for our room number which we gave then. Then they said they would need to see our room card to verify that we were indeed guest.

Waitstaff at the restaurant could have cared less and were inattentive to guests. Happy hour was not happening as advertised online and in the lobby due to an event in Miami beach. It took so long for the waitstaff to come with menus that I went to the bar and ordered all the food and drinks myself.

No such thing are quiet hours. 2 drunk staff members sat outside our room yelling and carrying on until 6am after getting off work.

Oh yeah, and then, construction started in the community kitchen at 7am in the morning. The community kitchen which was no longer available for guest utilization that we were informed of via a flyer upon arrival to our room

All in all a cool place aesthetically but if you appreciate a little bit of customer service and decent accommodations, look elsewhere.

I stayed in a private room for three nights. There's NO HOUSEKEEPING SERVICE, they never gave me fresh towels, they never replied my emails and the front desk lady ignored me when I asked for someone to clean the room. Totally unacceptable specially during Covid times.

Check in was smooth- there is a $51 resort fee
And $100 hold placed on your account for damages to be refunded when you leave. Our key cards didn’t work after 4 different exchanges and had to be escorted to the room for a day. Room itself was nice, even set on 66 the AC was doing all it could. Comfortable but not icicles like one would anticipate. Shampoo, conditioner and soap in the shower. Takes about 5+ min for the hot water to heat up, so turn it on and wait. Shower head was broken but functional. Bed comfortable, floor could be replaced. Very slippery, be careful with socks on. There is no coffee in the room or lobby, plan to outsource or bring your own. No cups for the sink or any kind of beverages in the fridge. The restaurant and bar were strongly reservation inclined, even as a guest of the hotel-dinner only, not open for breakfast. If you don’t have a reservation you can stand at the high top tables (no chairs) until further notice but you will be asked to move if you sit somewhere without reserving. 20% gratuities are included on your check as well no matter party size. Pool closes at dark. Multiple entrances but still have to use the main lobby. They do have towels, chairs and occasionally an umbrella but you must leave an ID or CC to reserve them. They’re a lot to carry (no wagon). One block to the beach, which is very nice. We did have a lot of noise early in the mornings-the doors of other rooms and the main door slam extremely loud so you’re going to be up early.

We stayed here hoping to enjoy the pool and bar, which our friend had recommended. But the bar doesn’t open while the pool is open, and then a big crowd of people from outside the hotel came with reservations at the bar and restaurant. As guests paying an expensive room rate (almost $400) we were not able to get a drink or any food except from room service, but then the room wasn’t very nice. There’s a cool vibe at this hotel and I wanted to like it, but wouldn’t recommend staying here. Stay somewhere else and make a reservation for the bar or restaurant instead.

My boyfriend and I booked a King Suite through Amex. We had both been here before 2020 and had nice stays. This hotel has gone severely downhill and I wouldn’t recommend you stay here unless you plan to spend minimal time at the “hotel.” I would personally call this a hostel. I think that would set more fair and accurate expectations. I found it hard to even enjoy the pool.
I’ll start with the lack of anything available to eat or drink in the early morning, no coffee or water. No ice coffee ever.
The bikes for rent are 2 hour maximum, then 30 bucks an hour. They were also rusted, one speed with no breaks.
Now let’s move onto the pool area. We woke up early when we were there and would find the place trashed with cigarette butts, garbage and broken bottles from the night before. It was gross. We stayed on a Saturday night and the pool was closed 3 hours early and off limits to guests for a private function. They made us walk through a dark alley to get to our room as to not disturb the private event.
The first day, no one came to clean our room. The second day, they tried coming in at 4:30pm after we had returned from the beach and were getting ready to go out for the night.

There were people staying in the dorms who were drunk and hanging out in the hallways and nooks and crannies of the place. When I was by the pool, I overheard some guests say this was a popular place for people to board and take a break from the streets, but because the hotel has a rule for a 14 night max stay they have to checkout for a night and then check back in.
The same people could be seen almost unconscious the two nights we got home from dinners. Did not seem like a state achievable by consumption of alcohol…If I was alone or in a group of women I would not feel safe staying here and navigating to my room safety.

This is the worse place I've ever stayed in. The rooms window were broken and it was freezing in the room. The beds have a white sheet and a small blanket that was not sufficient. The bathroom didn't even have a single outlet.
We had booked two nights and the hotel refused to refund us the second night, we left after one night and the still charged us for the second night and the resort fee. We went to the lobby at 130am to get help and no one was present and the rooms have no phones for you to get help. Don't stay here, the worse and I'm disappointed they would charge us a second night. I’ve attached photos of the window, they need to replace it completely.

Mildew room odor… pieces of food stuck in Lavabo drain visible while washing face and brushing teeth. A very unpleasant sight!!! Front desk attendant reacted, at first disinterested and only after my insistence to remove the food from drain, she told me housekeeping was not working but she could offer to move us to another room. Something a bit cumber after having unpacked the night before at our arrival…

It will probably be fine for you. If you booked all 8 bunks in the dorm with your party then outsiders shouldn't be an issue. If not then strangers may be sharing the dorm with you. I opted for a single room during my stay, because I can't sleep around strangers like that. The hotel received raved reviews from a friend of mine that stayed there before, but my actual experience was underwhelming. This hotel is not close to the South Beach hot spots. Plan on a nice long walk or drive to get to the popular South Beach attractions.
