Nestled close to the beach and bustling Ocean Drive, Essex House by Clevelander offers guests a prime location for exploring South Beach. Many guests praise the hotel's cleanliness and friendly service, though its rooms receive mixed reviews, with some finding them comfortably modern and others outdated.
While the hotel's amenities, including beach chairs, are a hit, there are mentions of underutilization and additional fees. The vibrant atmosphere is noted, but the enjoyment may be tempered by loud music into the night.

Detailed Reviews
We stayed here prior to going on a cruise. The hotel is in a good location, close to shops and restaurants and of course, Ocean Drive and Miami Beach. There is a great breakfast place attached to the hotel, Bacon Bitch, where you get a complimentary croissant and coffee, each morning. There is also an extensive and good value menu, if you want more than the complimentary offer.
Rooms are fairly basic and in need of some updating, however the beds and pillows were very comfortable and the room was clean. Having been completed in 1939, the main fabric of the building has stood the course of time well
Although you are on the main drag of Collins Avenue, we had a great nights sleep, (we had a side room).
All the staff we came into contact with, were very friendly, helpful and accommodating and couldn’t do enough to make your stay enjoyable.
A couple of things would make the use of the room better, a non slip mat in the bath and a plug. I’m sure if we’d asked they would have supplied them, but believe these items should be standard.
Overall a very pleasant stay

Great stay at vintageEssex House hotel in South Beach Miami, even with renovation of the outside of the hotel going on, visible caution signs were throughout keeping guest safe while enjoying the hotel. All hotel staff were pleasant and helpful. Special honorable mention to front desk employee, “Victoria” was professionally pleasant and accommodating to me on my milestone birthday stay at Essex House, Victoria made sure I had a nice top floor beautiful ocean view room during my birthday stay, offered great day tour excursions that made my trip all the more enjoyable. Victoria was oh so patient teaching me how to use my key card to access front door after hours, I was having a learning curve moment lol The work need more people like Victoria. Essex House should be proud to employ such wonderful talent. Special shout out to “Juan Carlos” on my last day at checkout was also pleasant and accommodating he allowed me store my luggage and belongings at the hotel while I went to the beach one last time until my late afternoon flight. I appreciated his professionalism and good customer service.
I will be returning in the months to come and will stay at Essex House hotel South Beach!
Chef kiss until next time🤌🏾

We stayed at the Clevelander Hotel for a quick girls’ getaway for the Usher concert, and it turned out to be the perfect choice!
Location: You absolutely can’t beat it. The hotel is right in the heart of South Beach, steps from the ocean and surrounded by restaurants, shops, and nightlife. It made exploring super convenient, especially for our girls’ trip vibe.
Rooms: We booked a standard room, and while the space was on the smaller side (typical for South Beach), it was clean, comfortable, and well-maintained. No more than 2 people per room though. Honestly, we weren’t in the room much anyway—there’s too much fun to be had!
Service: The front desk staff was amazing! A huge shoutout to Victoria and Carlos who went above and beyond to make our stay special. They were so friendly and attentive, answering questions, helping with recommendations, and ensuring we were taken care of.
Overall Atmosphere: The Clevelander has that fun, energetic vibe you want in Miami. It’s great for travelers looking for a lively environment—perfect for a girls’ trip!
If you’re looking for a spot that’s fun, convenient, and clean, with outstanding staff and a prime South Beach location, the Clevelander is it. We’ll definitely be back next time we’re in Miami!

The hotel says it has a swimming pool, which is not true, it is 1 block away and it is a bar so it doesn't have lounge chairs, I sat down and they just wanted to sell me something, I felt very uncomfortable, so I got up and didn't come back concur.
When the reception shifts change, even if the next person is not there, the one who is there leaves, leaving the reception alone.
They tell you beach towel service, but you have to use the one in your room, because they don't have them, and they don't have them to replace you either.
The toilet is correct.
They don't have a hot water dispenser, every time I needed water for tea or mate I had to go to the next building to ask for it.
Only one of the receptionists was in charge of translating what I wanted to tell me, the rest just said I don't speak Spanish, and didn't try to help me.
They do not have a refrigerator in the room, nor a washing machine in the building.
The location is very good.
Although Miami is noisy, the room is VERY noisy, it has the air conditioning on but it seems like there is an engine inside, a lot of noise.

The location on Miami Beach is absolutely right. However, don't bring a car here. The hotel can park it for you, only costs $50+ per night. Parking garage next door costs $40 cash a night, but it's a bit shady and it always remains to be seen how to get out of here.
The hotel is very much in need of renovation. The elevator didn't work, and it didn't seem like it was going to be fixed. In the 4 days we were there, I did not see any work done on it. Carpet was worn and full of stains.
Person is friendly and well cleaned. The music from the hotel terrace was always at maximum volume and the smell of weed was everywhere.
We're not coming back here.

I don’t enjoy leaving bad reviews but with so many places to choose from, do yourself a favor…stay elsewhere. I wasn’t expecting much from a boutique hotel near the beach, I paid for location I get that. But here were the issues 1. No refrigerator (ok can deal with that, asked for ice multiple times, still waiting for it and I’m home a week later) 2. Speaking of waiting…room service? Rang for 10 min so I called the front desk who told me try again they are there, this time it rang 30 min, so I left it ringing while I went to the Diner on 11th street, ate, came back and it was still ringing. What a joke that was. 3. The rooms are attached by a door to other rooms, so if you want a free high get ready for weed to fill your room on weekends for sure. Good luck sleeping at any reasonable time like 4am because your partying with the neighbor like it or not. 4. Service? What service? 5. Safety…now this was my favorite, people fighting in the hallways, asking me for $ as I try to get to my room, love when homeless people are in my hotel hitting me up for change. As I said, I hate leaving bad reviews but for $250-$400 a night you and I can stay at a chain hotel, lose a little in location but be safe, have a fridge, ice, don’t have to party w the neighbors and ensure at least average customer service.
The pros: location, water pressure except the sink, you could spit in your hand faster, AC worked.

My husband and I booked the Essex House for one night on our honeymoon before we left for our cruise the next day. Our flight was delayed several times and we didn’t arrive at the hotel until after 1am. Upon arrival, we were told that we were staying at the other property, the Clevelander. (I checked the booking when we got to our room and we had indeed booked the Essex House) We walked down the street to it, and there was a nightclub on the patio. The music was extremely loud and played until past 4am. We asked if we could have late checkout because our flight was delayed so much, we didn’t have to be at the cruise port until 1pm, and it was our honeymoon. They did not offer anything to us, despite moving us to the other hotel. The room we were given was very much not as nice as the room we had booked at the Essex House. It had two beds instead of one, no carpet, and was very small. We were very uncomfortable and couldn’t get to sleep because of the music, and it wasn’t what we wanted or had booked at all. The staff told us upon checkout that we had been given a “free upgrade” but the experience we had was horrible and not what we were looking for. We also were required to pay a “resort fee” at the Clevelander for things like free beach chairs, bikes, entrance to the nightclub, etc- none of which we used because it was so late when we got there and they required us to leave by 11am. So despite already paying for a nicer room and getting moved to this hotel, we still had to pay a fee for things we didn’t use. All in all, it was a horridly stressful and uncomfortable experience. I would NEVER book the Essex House or the Clevelander again. I wish I could leave zero stars.

This place is the worst it started when we arrived to check in. I booked through Expedia the app showed one price owed but the hotel had all kind of hidden Fees that added an additional 400 plus to what I was expecting to pay. I get to room it's very basic for a suite. I must mention the lighting in the room is very poor some lights work others did not. The shower did not work called to report they never sent any one to check it out. The bathroom had a used bar of soap on sink when we arrived. The roll of tissue had been used it was almost gone the spare roll on the back of the toilet was another used roll. The garbage can in the bathroom had not been emptied it had used Tampon papers in it. The room never got cleaned while we were there from Friday until Monday. The pillows or old and worn really soft. The bed made all kind of noise when tried to lay down. FYI the parking is not as stated on site it's 53 plus dollars a night. The internet is very crappie. There's no pool in the hotel itself you have to go to Sister hotel if you would like to swim. I could go on and on about this place but I'm sure you get the picture stay away from this place.

for the money you pay u get a much nicer hotel in the same area.. starting from the staff, not very polite and quite unfriendly, the front dest guy seemed to be too busy playing computer games rather than helping customers out.. never have i ever stayed in the room with such dirty floors. im from europe so wearing shoes on the inside is not a thing im used to , i mean you could atleast vacuum the floors from time to time? not once in our 5 days were the floors cleaned or vacuumed.. there was no hot water from the tap.so washing your face with cold water was fun. shower products were "rituals" bottles filled with god knows what..i was looking forward to taking a bath but there were no bath plug.. so bring your own. the walls are paper thin.. and paying 35 dollars daily for the resort fee .. for pretty much just a towel.. when we booked we were told we get a free drink and there will be coffee and a pastries in the morning.. none of that. atlest the front desk guy didnt say anything about that.. room cleaning.. as in somebody who makes your bed and thats all.. that was done like after 3 pm.. or some days they didnt clean the room at all... overall very unpleasant and unfriendly place to visit..

So reading some previous reviews I was worried about the room but was pleasantly surprised. The room was clean and a lot more spacious than I thought. 2 lovely full length mirrors to get ready with and a spacious area for clothes / en-suite also within a great location to nearby places. Unfortunately that’s as far as the positives get I think as there is NO hot water!! My family kept telling me (we were spread out over 4 bedrooms) that I had to just run it for longer as they experienced the same but the longest I tried was about a full 9 minutes with no temperature change so just had a very cold shower to freshen up after arrival. I did not think this would change and can’t justify running a shower for more than 15 minutes with no indication the temperature is getting warmer?
I was expecting noise as let’s face it we are in Miami and in a great central location but this was pretty ridiculous. The night club next door was so loud you could hear everything. There is no way in hell these rooms are sound proof as stated as not only did the windows seem to let every bit of noise from the pavements, roads and buildings surrounding us but I could actually hear guests next door speaking when I was in bed which is just crazy.
Think you have to judge for yourself and weigh up pro’s and cons

Idk about the flight credit, but I booked thru the hotel website and selected other "credits". It said I would receive email info 1 day prior to my check in, but never received any emails from them. I not referring to the Essex, but the third party associated with the offer.
The pool is small and not many loungers.
Boucher brothers have the monopoly on the sunloungers etc and they do not give discounts to Essex House hotel as we asked!
Hope this helps
