Nestled amidst scenic grounds, the Plantation Resort on Crystal River has been lauded for its Old Florida charm and prime location, which guests find ideal for nearby activities. However, the resort receives mixed feedback; some visitors commend the clean, comfortable accommodations and enjoyable pool area, while numerous reviews point out the rooms' cleanliness shortcomings and maintenance issues. At first arrival, the Plantation fits it's name with a beautiful curb appeal. We parked under the porte-cochere behind a Tahoe. I say that only because it was still there 20 minutes later after I'd checked in (Jennifer was fantastic) and after I'd booked our Manatee tour in the gift shop (Jackie was sweet and very helpful). I came out and we had been blocked in by the Tahoe and now the golf cart driven by one of the chefs. We had to ask for someone to move the cart, which they did and then parked it back in the same spot for someone else to get blocked in.
The rooms were clean and at first glance appeared to have been updated, but forgot to move into this century by providing USB ports anywhere in the room or a desk lamp that worked. The bathroom, though thoroughly clean, looked like it hadn't been updated in many years.
We had dinner in the restaurant. I recommend making reservations if you can, it is the only way to be seated by the windows. My husband ordered the seafood platter, which was quite yummy but was more of a lunch portion than a dinner portion. I ordered the prime rib and baked potato. I understand trying to "present" a meal but laying the prime rib on top of the baked potato was not pretty nor was it functional. The prime rib was tasty!! They do have horseradish sauce and au jus but you'll need to request it as it does not come "with" the meal. The restaurant wasn't particularly busy, so I didn't really see a reason for the incredibly slow service. The bus boy (I wish I'd gotten his name) seemed to be the only one staying on top of things and the only one who was pleasant to us.Everyone else acted as though we were an imposition.
Lastly, breakfast. Meh. Seriously, the food was nothing more than what you'd get at a basic "breakfast included" hotel and at almost $30 for 2 of us, was definitely NOT worth the price. As for the service.....after waiting for way too long, my husband had to go into the kitchen to find the waitress. She seated us. I asked for cream for my coffee, specifically heavy cream. She just snapped at me when I asked and said NO! We only have half and half! After we'd gotten our food and sat down a different waitress, Barbara, came to our table. What a treat! Pleasant! Outgoing! Kind! She asked if there was anything we needed and I said that she'd be my new best friend if she could find Heavy Cream for my coffee. She was back in just a few minutes with it! The fact that she took the time to look for some was much appreciated. Her attitude and effort makes her an absolute GEM (and my new best friend)!!
Bottom line, Jackie, Jennifer and Barbara were the stars of our weekend.
P.S. The walls are super thin! You can hear everything in the halls, the surrounding rooms and outside.

This is not your usual American chain hotel. It has character and style. The impression as you enter the drive is of a southern states plantation mansion. This image continues in the reception area with it sweeping staircase up to the next floor. There are numerous activities on site for both children and adults. From the back of the hotel there are good view towards the many water channels which are typical of this area. Just after we arrived three manatees swam past within feet of us. The room we occupied was spacious and clean. The beds were very comfortable and despite the hotel being very full we got a good night's sleep in quiet conditions. The hotel has a restaurant which served some lovely meals at a good price and catered for children as well. Breakfast could either be cooked or continental and there was a good choice for both. Also a reasonable price. We thought this hotel was a real find and wouldn't hesitate to stay there again.

We booked a “waterfront patio room,” and paid a premium price at $350 for a weekend at Crystal River. Having never been to this area, we weren’t sure what to expect, but certainly expected more. First, the “patio” was not a patio. It was a FILTHY, narrow area with garbage and dirty plastic chairs - see photos. Second, the room was disgustingly filthy, as if it hadn’t been cleaned at all except to make the bed. There was a mildew smell, which was very concerning because it seemed like there was mold in the shower. Also, during a time when cleanliness and sanitization are critical, we were concerned that this hotel was clearly not following health guidelines in the common areas, such as pool, restaurants, and lobby. The carpets were also very dirty and clearly hallways and other areas aren’t being regularly cleaned (visible, prominent dust, fingerprints, cobwebs). There was also a large party adjacent to us the night before that went until 3am... no, I didn’t call to complain. Rather, just tried to go back to sleep. I figured shouldn’t they have security, which would take care of this?

Upon checkout in the morning, I asked for the manager and was approached by Guest Services Manager, Sandra Whitesell. I calmly and amicably explained the issues - the unclean room, the mildew smell, the garbage on the patio, the party. She listened impassively and then simply said “well, you already prepaid.” And, then proceeded to tell me that it was my fault for not calling security and not asking for the garbage to be cleaned off the patio or asking for my room to be cleaned when we checked in. She said it was scallop season, and unfortunately “we are very busy and some guests just don’t know how to behave.” When I said “is that it?” she just said “yes.” No apology, no acknowledgement, no responsibility. Not even a smile. It was clear this hotel doesn’t care if we ever come back.

This is an aged, dirty hotel with terrible service. Most importantly, I would be concerned about cleanliness, health, and safety/security. They have a nice location on the water, but that’s about it. It is very run down, and has the feel of a set of cheap apartments. If you’re planning to go to this area and don’t prefer a low cost chain hotel, you might think this is a more upscale option. It’s not. Try a private house rental or stay a little farther away at a trusted hotel brand. You’ll have to drive over to the river anyway.

We stayed here for two nights. It’s difficult to review this hotel because it is a tale of two cities. The restaurant is attractive, if noisy, with good good and great staff. (Looking at you, Laura!). The pool is large and beautiful and they are installing a kids’ splash pad that looks like a lot of fun. There is lots to do—bikes, golf, spa, paddle boards, and pontoon boats. I highly recommend the pontoon afternoon cruise. This is an area that is best seen from the water and we saw several manatees.
But our room....It was very large and the bed was very comfortable. However, it was very dated otherwise. We booked it as a “river view” but it overlooks a canal that you can’t see unless you stand at the window. The couch was exceptionally hard and the fabric felt like plastic. The bathroom was sorely in need of updating and Clorox. The television was ridiculously small, especially given how inexpensive TVs are these days.
The front desk and housekeeping staff were very quick to address a concern I had on checking in.
On the whole the hotel was a fair value for the money, but feels like a throwback to an earlier time.

This hotel is very dated, poorly maintained, and it's obvious that Choice chain and management is not interested in making this property more than a 2 star. Some of our observations are many that soured our stay. Old appliances including refrigerator, telephone, lamps. TV is a 20" model. No trash can in bathroom, plastic cups, peeling paint in bathroom, old caulking, bathtub cosmetic sealant was pealing showing off real age. Chair was frayed. Non existent sound proofing disturbing us frequently. Hallway, staircase, elevator carpets are seriously in need of change. No vacuuming of carpeting. Housekeeping uses towels laid on door jam and nasty carpet to keep doors open to clean. Never saw this before and is tacky. Restaurant is blah, mainly tiki bar fare. We only ate there once. I'm not normally someone apt to complain on the internet, but we expected so much more from a so called resort.

My husband and I love to fish. We regularly watch Captain Jimmy Nelson on You Tube to find new places to visit for fishing trips. We’ve seen episodes where he has stayed at The Plantation and it always looked so pristine on tv so we thought we’d give it a try.

On arrival we were surprised to see how much exterior maintenance the facility lacked. Check-in was great, but we noticed none of the staff wearing, including restaurant staff which was a bit concerning. Just to be safe and prevent possible COVID19 exposure, I planned to wipe all knobs and surfaces we would touch in our room with disinfectant. When I started cleaning I found the lamps were dusty, food and smudged fingerprints on mini fridge, hair in shower, and a tip envelope for the housekeeper was stained with what I think was red sauce.

Wednesday and Thursday nights were fantastic and peaceful. But then Friday came and so did the party people. The walls of the hotel are paper thin and not sound proof at all. We had to call twice because the people next to us were blasting their music so loud we couldn’t sleep.

Saturday night there was a boat with a very impressive sound system blasting NWA and Young Money until midnight (you could hear all about NWA’s b*****s and hoes right through our wall). Men openly peeing off the side of the hotel sea wall and not even trying to cover themselves when we walk by. Children running around until 1am because their drunk parents were too intoxicated to tell them to be quiet because people are sleeping. I’m surprised hotel security did not break up this rowdy group.

One positive of the hotel is it is centrally located and it has a sea wall you can keep your boat moored to. Keep in mind boat slips are first come first served. It does get so crowded on Friday and Saturday night so if you don’t call it a day on the water by mid afternoon then you won’t be able to find a spot on the wall.

We won’t be staying again. Next time we’ll rent a slip from a marina and stay at a different hotel.

My wife and I stayed two nights here. If they hadn’t been gifted to us by friends we would have demanded a refund and gone somewhere else.
Upon arrival at 3:32pm, we were told our room would not be ready to 4:00pm. My thought was surely it’s ready by now. Guess not. At 4:10 we checked back in and we’re given our door key. As we entered the room we noticed there was mop water still puddled on the floor as well as the door locking system didn’t work properly. The room was right next to an outside door that was extremely loud as people open and let it slam. I knew we’d not sleep through that sound. I asked for another room and the manager offered a room in another building three buildings down the way. Not the nicest building either but was dirty!
The room we entered had dirty floors, HAIR IN THE BATHTUB, gum in the trash bag, and very small beds. (Too small for two people to sleep in)
The hot tub was broken which was a huge let down and the heated pool was heated to about 60 degrees. ( I’m not a penguin)
The second day I requested a roll of toilet paper and a box of tissues that call took place at 6:17pm. I waited an hour and called back three times before someone answered. At 7:52pm we finally received the toilet paper from the front desk worker. She was less than happy to deliver it.
It was not a great experience but what do you expect from a place called The Plantation. Lol. I expected more.

My husband and I were in town visiting family and decided to stay at this hotel. We typically choose Choice hotels when we travel and are accustomed to what they offer. We were BLOWN AWAY by the Plantation on Crystal River! The customer service alone will keep us coming back every time we are in town. The rooms were spotless and there are so many options on things to do that you never really have to leave the property. Ordering dinner was easy, fast and delicious. I highly recommend the bourbon glazed salmon. Next time we are flying in a day or two early so we can take full advantage of the spa and tours they offer.
It's obvious this team take customer service very serious. What an amazing experience.

We stayed three days trying to relax and enjoy seeing the manatees. The room itself was spacious and nice.No carpet yayyyy for my daughter who is allergic to everything. It was clean, had a mini fridge, a dehumidifier(we are in Florida) and a really small tv. I got a room racing the springs which I was little disappointed. Cause there in the view was residential homes. And the springs look like a canal..lol but this is my first time here. The restaurant would actually cook your fish, if you went fishing and caught something 😊.. They had sunset tours but no sunrise tours ☹ But I'm up at the crack of dawn cause of my leg. They had alot of amenities, which my daughters played yard chess while I just sat and watched. The kiddie pool look like it was being refurbished. The carpet in our hallway was filthy but overall. I would stay here again. My checkin was smooth as well as my checkout. All of the staff I came in contact with was very friendly and my housekeeper without asking left us extra tea cups, towels and soaps. She also helped me with the ac ours was locked. Froze my girls out but I'm a pole bear it was nice for me. The light in the bathroom blinked on and off and finally stayed off when we left. Some places around the resort you can see needs either new paint or power washing. I hate the resort fees these places put on. But over all it was a nice stay. We will be back.
