Travelers' Choice
Nestled on the unspoilt island of Falhumaafushi in Gaafu Alifu atoll, one of the largest and deepest atolls in the world, this 94 beach-front and over-water villa resort is an intimate retreat. The beauty of the island’s house reef and its resident sharks and turtles is accessible right from the over-water villa deck. Designed to complement its tropical surroundings and provide a sense of place, the villas have been created using natural materials and are decorated with local artefacts. The Spa by Clarins on both Falhumaafushi and sister resort on adjacent Dhigurah island is exclusive to The Residence in the Maldives and offers a range of treatments created exclusively for the resort – an ideal place to escape as it sits directly on the lagoon. The resort boasts three restaurants and four bars, water sports, a fitness centre, kids club and excursions to nearby islands. The romantic Falhumaa restaurant is located at the end of a 230m jetty, right on the reef facing the Indian Ocean. The diving surrounding the hotel is exceptional and the hotel’s PADI 5* Dive Centre offers all level of snorkellers and scuba-divers the opportunity to discover the un-spoilt coral reefs and rich marine life.

We’ve been to some great hotels over the years and the Residence Maldives is certainly up there so much so that this is the first review I’ve written whilst still on vacation. The internal flight and speedboat was straight forward with residence staff on hand all the way. Check in was a breeze. Travelling around both islands is fun on the bikes and buggies always available when you don’t fancy the cycle. Availability of restaurants is good and the fine dining options are a class above. Quality of food is great. The beach bar is our favourite haunt and the cocktails on offer is extensive and good quality. Mounesh, Deepak, Raja etc. are always on hand and nothing is too much trouble. We also enjoyed the ‘Just the two of us’ package at the spa which was excellent. Mia and Sungay were so professional and we walked out of there so relaxed. Highly recommended. Snorkelling from the beach is great too. Within our first few days we seen turtles, black tip sharks and also a leopard shark (very lucky). We will be sad to leave this gem of a place.

This is a beautiful family resort. I like the fact that you have two islands with two different pools, restaurants, etc to explore. You are given bicycles at your room so it helps get around the property and helps get you to the other island, Dhiguri. Alexandra was our host when we arrived at the resort. We upgraded to the all-inclusive plan, which I thought was a little expensive for what was offered, but still felt it was better for us to have the AI. Alexandra was so super helpful to us the entire time we were there. She is definitely top-notch and does her job very well! We spent New Year's Eve at the resort. They had a special reception, dinner, then of course fireworks and music to ring in the new year. It was all done very nicely and we definitely enjoyed ourselves! The next day, we took the Dolphin cruise and were lucky enough to see dolphins as well as an amazing sunset. In the dining room, Aishath greeted us with a warm welcome every morning! She quickly learned our room number as well as what we wanted to drink with our meals. Our waitstaff was all amazing, but a special shout out to Jaavid, Naail and Dhiyam who went out of their way to accommodate us. After asking questions about their culture, Jaavid actually spoke with the chef and had prepared for us a traditional Maldivian breakfast one morning! It was amazing and we are so grateful for his kindness. It is always nice to experience other cultures and we got to have a small glimpse of what real Maldivian food was! While there we did a Maldivian cooking class which I thoroughly enjoyed. The chef was very informative and taught us how to make Mas Huni, A fish curry, and a banana dessert that was to die for. We went to the spa twice. We had a sixty-minute couples massage, then a ninety-minute couples massage. They were simply amazing! I think it was traditional Balinese massage techniques, but I felt super relaxed when I left. Definitely one of my top massages ever! We snorkeled around our villa and I came face to face with an eagle ray that apparently lives in the lagoon. He was beautiful and scary all at the same time! Lots of fish to drink my morning tea with and that bathroom... WOW! The sunsets were amazing each night. We did the wine dinner at Falumaa one night, and also ate there for lunch as well as regular dinner one night. Amazing food and there are plenty of sharks that hang around in the waters near the restaurant. They had beautiful floating flower arrangements wherever you went and it added such a nice touch to the decor. Our main bartender, Maunish, was always super helpful and remembered what we drank and our room numbers. Those little things go a long way! He always had a smile on his face and made a very good old-fashioned! This was an amazing trip to celebrate my 50th birthday! The rooms and beds were nice and super comfortable. The bikes were a nice touch to allow you to get around a little easier. There was lots of jungle areas and shady trails to ride your bike through and so many beautiful flowers all around. On Falumaafushi, they have a nice pool, but a larger beach area. On Dhiguri, they have a larger pool area and very little beach. Castaway Island, which lies between Falumaafushi and Dhiguri is pristine beach with beautiful blue water. You can lie on the hammocks, lounge in the sun or snorkel off the beach. They also have a small bar there so you can get refreshments. A very beautiful resort in the Maldives with extremely helpful staff! Wonderful place to visit!

We booked this hotel directly on the basis that we could cancel free of charge as long as 7 days' notice was provided. We booked during the Covid-19 Pandemic and were assured by the Residence that our booking could be cancelled, if necessary and all monies refunded. We contacted the Residence in December 2021 to cancel our booking for March 2022. Save for asking us the reason for cancellation, they have failed to engage. We wrote to them again 7 days ago asking for confirmation of a full refund but we have not received a response, nor an acknowledgment. We have been met with complete radio silence which is deeply frustrating! This is wholly unprofessional and not the service that we expected. We are incredibly disappointed and would not book this hotel in the Maldives or any other part of the world.

Thanks! For a perfect vacation. It seems impossible that nothing could be better than living in paradise for 10 days. But the most impressive thing is that "The Residence" surprises above any other concept, for the exquisite, familiar, close and honest treatment of its workers. They are not helpful by trade, they are by nature. Thanks Raja, Ritesh, Nail, Shina !! And so many others who have been able with their daily task to make us feel at home. Hard to forget New Years Eve 2021-22. It is impossible to reflect the lived experience in photographs or in words. If you can afford it, do not hesitate for a moment to visit the Maldives. If the budget allows it, "The Residence" will not disappoint you at all. In a corner of the world and with the Indian Ocean at your feet, you can only let yourself be carried away by the sunset, the hospitality and the gastronomy of Falhumaafushi. Fishing trips, dolphins, a massage at the Clarins SPA, a romantic bike ride over the bridge ... Everything has been recorded in our retina. Thanks for everything! Laura and Jordi. We start saving today so we can return ...
