My wife and I found this gem about 10 years ago before we were married. Our last visit was during the summer when we were able to enjoy the spectacular gardens. We waited too long to return. This time we came with our little fur baby who was welcomed with open arms. Originally built in 1833 this home is filled with the warmth and charm you would expect from a national landmarked mansion. Yes, the dining room, parlor and kitchen areas are filled with collections from around the world making this a very unique B&B. Amazing gourmet breakfasts prepared by your gracious host Evan. We stayed in the spacious Veranda which is the same room we stayed in 10 years ago. Each guest room has its own assigned parking space. You’ll also be greeted by the resident Dixie who is Evans fur baby. Dixie is warm and gentle. We hope to return this summer to enjoy the beautiful gardens and swimming pool.

The mansion is fully stocked with eclectic artifacts and the historical connections to Mystic create a nostalgic vibe unmatched to any other.
Evan has a warm welcoming soul that made us feel at home throughout our stay.
We stayed in the Cupola room, fully equipped with a fireplace, jetted tub and of course private access to the cupola. The complimentary sherry was an unexpected stroke of elegant hospitality.
We will be back again once the pool opens up and Im sure we’ll enjoy our next stay even more.

My sister, friend, and I spent one night at House of 1833 and couldn't be more happy with our choice. My second time in a B&B and my friend's first. We had an amazing time and really didn't want to leave. Evan, the owner, is a wonderful chef and the waffles and blueberry muffins were delicious!! He was so accommodating and was more than happy to give us suggestions on where to eat for dinner. Mr. Dixie and Sushi (adorably sweet dogs) were added bonuses! The Oak room was very comfortable, and despite being fully booked, we didn't hear any noise. The gardens provide ample opportunities for quiet solitude. I've also never seen such a clean swimming pool. The house itself is filled with antiques and curiosities - your eyes wander to every detail and wonder what story lies with each item. Look around and you will appreciate being surrounded by history and memories. The house exudes a warmth and sentiment that you can't find in any commercial lodge. We will definitely be returning. Thank you Evan!

My husband & I were planning a short stay in Mystic/Stonington, CT for the first time, and then on to RI. After comparing places to stay, based on my internet research, The House of 1833 appeared to be the perfect historical place to stay. Unfortunately, we did not enjoy the same positive experience as others who have posted here. Perhaps it was because Mid Sept is when bookings are suddenly slow where there was no time for the owners to have everything in tip top shape for us, as we were the only guests there at the time. I can only be politely honest & upfront by telling you that both the outside & inside of this historic building are in dire need of major TLC, as well as the overcrowded, unkept, weed infested grounds. The front parlor & following dining room, though very historic, were dark & gloomy with a clutter of furnishings & fixtures, too claustrophobic for us to enjoy. We were put in the first floor Peach Room (the only guest room on that floor) which was very small, cluttered with excessive amounts of asian fixtures using 5 surge protectors (possible fire hazard) for lamps to bring some kind of light into the room. The bathroom - though sizable, was also overly decorated with eerie looking asian decor, the shower drain kept clogging, and the bathtub jets didn't work. With various Covid requirements, I was surprised to see an old glass carafe of sherry in our guestroom, as well as uncovered drinking cups in the bathroom. The one place to put our clothes was a smelly armoire, where we chose to keep our clothes in our suitcases. The flat screen tv was smaller than my laptop, and the channels kept fizzling every day. Though free WiFi is provided, we still had trouble using our cell phones there. Seeing a slightly opened door in the dining room, I found a spare room that faces front (on the other side of the staircase). Hoping it would be a relaxing library/spare room to enjoy, I was shocked to see it being used as a storage room, filled with more clutter, and smelled horribly. Storm doors appeared dirty, and I even feel awkward to say that the one owner wore the same dirty looking clothing every day. The one positive thing is that the owners are very nice, where the one was there every day to have coffee ready early, and to prepare & even spoil us with a tasty breakfast, as well as engaging in great conversations! Unless the cow-owners are able to put some $ & effort into revitalizing this once beautiful historic inn, for now sadly, I cannot offer a good rating at all here.

Response from Evan Nickles, Owner at House of 1833
Responded Sep 24, 2020
How does one respond to such a cascade. We are so very sad you did not discover the magic of the House of 1833 experience...where you are immersed in Mystic's rich maritime history; filled with original and authentic artifacts from Mystic's 19th century 'China Trade' and museum quality archives of its proud whaling ship history...nor dazzled by the singular serenity of our effusive English 'fantasy-meadow' gardens where strategically planted perennials create a garden architecture to support mid-summer to early fall blossoming vines and passion flowers. Finally, we send heartfelt wishes for 'happy trails' wherever life's adventures take you and hopes for a wonderful autumn that extends summer's warmth a little longer...and best wishes for a blessed holiday season.

If you are looking for a quiet friendly historic B&B this is the place. Situated very close to all attractions and restaurants in Mystic this place provides the peace and relaxation you’re looking for. Evan the host and his faithful dog Mr. Dixie are welcoming and friendly. Evan shows you around and then the place is yours. Ice ,water ,seltzer ,coffee and treats are available thru out the day and Evan serves a spectacular and tasty breakfast in the A.M.
The rooms are spacious and comfy. We stayed in the Cupola room which had stairs up to the Cupola sitting room with 360 views. The rooms are pet friendly so next time we will be bringing our pup.

My husband & I stayed 2 nights at this lovely bed & breakfast! The biggest plus was, we could bring our golden doodle with us!! House of 1833 has a lot to offer in terms of furnishings ( mostly antique ) Christmas decorations & very festive breakfast room!! The highlight of the stay was Evans hospitality. He is an amazing chef & prepares very good breakfast. The blueberry muffins with fresh whipped cream was a topper. Evans Dog Dixie is a sweetheart & v.mellow. Mystic downtown is less than a 10 min ride in the car. All in all, it felt like home away from home & from the verandah room, I had access to the kitchen & microwave, and the drawer with all kinds of exotic tea bags. We will definitely love to go there in summer & enjoy the pool area & gardens.

The lodging is comfortable and attractive. The grounds are lovely and have a lot to offer. The decorations are fascinating. The host is interesting, personable and very quirky. He is also very flexible and accommodating and helpful and knowledgeable.

But what made our stay truly memorable was the incredibly high quality of the breakfast.

The only downside is that you are a few miles from the restaurants and attractions of Mystic, so if convenience is your main concern, you may want to select one of the many options downtown. But this place is very quiet and peaceful and, as I said, very interesting. And it is a gorgeous, historical building and property.

Hands down the BEST Breakfast EVER! Evan is a Phenomenal chef. He catered to everyone's needs and had a variety of freshly made breakfast options. The room was very comfortable and quiet, even with a full house.
Thanks for a wonderful start to our vacation!

While definitely a bit quirky, the inn is a treasure trove of objects and antiques. Evan is an amazing host and we thorough enjoyed our stay. We were only there for one night, but the pool is lovely and Evan even recommended a band to see after dinner which was fun. We had the most amazing breakfast the following morning, met some delightful people and you can tell he puts a lot of effort into the inn. So much more fun than your "regular" hotel room. Would definitely return!

The room was splendid with a large hot tub right near a wood fireplace (Duraflames provided for easy lighting). The furniture was truly from another era and the bathroom was large enough to have a settee. The host staff were truly gracious and accommodating with breakfasts each morning that told a story. There were many curious paintings and historical knickknacks to learn from. The country store, Mistick Village and main street Mystic were just a short jaunt away. Would visit again - especially in warmer weather.
