The Goodwin story began in 1881, when two brothers, James J. Goodwin and Rev. Francis Goodwin, developed this classic structure as a landmark apartment building. Originally developed as an upscale apartment building and later converted to a hotel, The Goodwin was a classic and prestigious address from the start. With a star-studded history, characters like J.P. Morgan resided there during visits to his hometown, and it has retained its sophistication and appeal ever since. The hotel was converted in the late 1980s in conjunction with the Goodwin Square project, its façade was preserved from the apartment building, and has become an iconic Hartford landmark. For its 2017 rebirth, The Goodwin will exude a vibrant City style, while retaining elements of its history, heritage and tradition to demonstrate the authentic character that makes it so special. Guest rooms have been re-imagined. Interior spaces have been thoughtfully designed as welcoming gathering areas. Original fireplaces remain, built-in wood closets restored. The entire staff has been classically trained in the lost art of service and hospitality. And a world-class brasserie adds to the unmistakable Goodwin experience. Cosmopolitan and urban-chic…yet grounded in a timeless and rich history. Welcome to the only boutique hotel in Hartford.

Not very please, over charged. Subpar room. Will not return. Paint peeling off the bathroom ceiling. No view. Could hear every sound from the hallways, to the other rooms. Very disappointed with the quality for the price.

We just enjoyed two peaceful, luxurious nights at The Goodwin while on a college visit road trip. The historic building in downtown Hartford is gorgeous and convenient to a number of great dining options. Rooms are clean and beautifully appointed with contemporary furniture, fittings and art. (Goodwin-branded toiletries were lovely, too.) As a boutique hotel, The Goodwin does not have vending machines in the hall (thank goodness), but the staff can provide any coffee, waters, snacks, etc., you need. They were all incredibly friendly ... and after two rough nights on the road here, they greeted us with the best phrase ever, “quiet hours are between 11 and 7.” They needn’t have warned us, though; hotel was blissfully quiet the whole time. Can’t recommend more. Hope to return soon!

I was very excited to stay here after 9 months of being cooped up because of the pandemic but it was a letdown. The front desk staff were nice enough and the room was clean and the decor was fine but it was really not a 4 or 5 star experience. That was the reason I paid almost 2x the rate of other hotels, I wanted to treat myself. However, it was a 3 star at best. There are a lot of amenities and features listed that I wasn't offered or experienced and shouldn't be listed as amenities on tripadvisor. There was no shuttlebus from the airport, no doorperson, no offer of a newspaper, no minibar or snacks, no fireplace, and no breakfast. It seems easy enough to make all those things COVID safe e.g. provide prepackaged baked goods that guests could pick up and take back to their rooms, tell guests they are entitled to 2 bottles of water and snacks each day but they have to pick it up from the front desk, and mandate masks on the shuttlebus. I understand the restaurant being closed due to COVID but there was also no microwave in the room. How are you supposed to heat up food during a pandemic? It is not very convenient especially if you are staying for more than a day. You can't buy food to store, you have to keep ordering out if you want hot food. All they provided was a fridge which didn't even have water in it. A case of water from walmart or costco costs very little and water is just such a basic need. I called the front desk but was just told I could buy an Evian for $5. My room faced a wall so I didn't have a view of the city unfortunately. While the room was nice enough and clean it didn't have the high end luxury touches I would expect from a 4/5 star hotel. They didn't make everything all white like most hotels but the addition of color was really the main difference. Staff never really asked why I was there or sought out any other information to make sure I was super comfortable. They did bring me a cosy blanket as the room was too cold for me and they cap their heat at 75 degrees. My stay was without mishap but I've honestly gotten much more luxury experiences at 3 star hotels and even some European hostels I've stayed at where they really try to understand why you are there, the experience you are seeking, and anticipate what will make the experience great for you. It didn't seem worth the markup at all based on the experience I thought I was paying for.

Such a unique room and hotel. Really beautiful furniture and the ceilings were a wonderful blue. Food was DELICIOUS. Would highly recommend having your dinner at the Goodwin. Bathrooms are spacious and bright.

It was a beautiful hotel room. I loved the stay at the hotel and the friendliness of the workers. My only issue was that annoying garage. We were locked in at 8:30pm and couldn’t get out to get to our reservation at a restaurant so we had to get an Uber to the restaurant and when we were leaving the restaurant we couldn’t find an Uber back to the hotel and had to ask the waiter to give us a ride to the hotel. It was insane. But I did enjoy the stay at the hotel. Just don’t park in the garage if you plan on leaving during your stay
