I booked reservations in July 2022 for two nights in May 2023. Fortunately I had a printed confirmation as when I arrived at the hotel Friday at 3:30 p.m.the computers were down and I was told I did not have a reservation. I presented my printed confirmation and was reluctantly given a key by the manager and was told to return later that evening to sign the check-in papers. The room was deplorable! Lamps were not working, wallpaper was ripped and hanging from the wall next to the air conditioner, there was a big black chip in the bathub, a double towel rack was missing the bottom rack but the hardware was in the wall, paint was chipped and there were large white spots in many places that should have been painted orange. Fortunately the bed checked out though I would not walk barefoot on the rugs. When I returned later in the evening I was given papers to sign but was not given a copy. Breakfast both mornings was missing fruit and cream cheese and when I ask the attendant she was very apologetic and said they had had no deliveries in two days. I returned to my room about 5:00 Saturday evening to find that my room had not been cleaned. I met a maintenance man in the hallway who though said it was not his job, he cared about the guests and wanted to make sure everyone was satisfied, He came into the room, collected the trash and dirty towels and brought me clean ones. He also told me that the rooms are only cleaned every three days unless requested daily as there were only three housekeepers in the entire hotel. Evidently this information was in the check-in papers which I did not have and there were no signs in the room or elsewhere on the property indicating this policy. As he was leaving he directed the night manager to my room. He, too, was very apologetic and was going down to the front desk to have them give me a discount. Check-out time on Sunday was a disaster. The front desk clerk was very nasty, did not know anything about a discount and asked me why I thought I should get a discount. I asked for the manager and was told he was not there and I got his name. An email was sent directly to the manager, Brian Moore, including a hard copy mailed that same day. It is now two weeks since contact was made and I have not heard from him. Do not under any circumstances stay at this hotel ! I paid almost $400 for two nights at a below standard hotel. My next contact is to the Choice Hotels Corporate Office. The Clarion Hotel and Suites is an insult and embarrassment to the chain.

We booked this on Expedia and everything was incorrect! The rooms were filthy, hairs in the tub and floor and furniture in bad shape. We asked for our rooms to be cleaned but they told us they have a 3 day policy and only 2 housekeepers. We especially requested it and they promised, but never did our 3 nights. They list it with daily housekeeping. It is dirty and save your money for a better place. Choice Hotels are independently run and franchised and quality is lacking. I will never stay at this one again.

We stayed at this hotel for one night because my son had some friends from college over and we gave them space. We searched for hotels with pools and spas. This one claimed to have one but when we checked in, the pool was out of order. In fact, it has been out of order for months. So they claim it as an amenity but based on the rest of the hotel, it os cheaper to just let it be broken. The rest of the hotel smells musty and the floors are sticky. Lower floor rooms have inside and outside doors but the doors to the outside do not close well. The single pull down curtain does not close the light from the parking lot out of the room. Our tv is broken and a man has been in and out of our room for an hour trying to get it to work. It has been a terrible experience and we are only 2 hours in. Pray for us.

So, the staff were friendly and competent, and I did sleep fine in the bed. But there's a good reason this hotel was the least expensive in the area: they couldn't get people to stay if it weren't. * The remote control for the AC/Heat unit was SUPER fancy, but it didn't come with instructions and it obviously had defeated the last guest. Though set for 85, the room was only in the low 50's when I arrived. It took me about 15 minutes to figure out how to set it to a reasonable temp. * All the shades on the lamps had rips. The electrical outlets in their bases didn't work. * There was a curtain covering a glass wall to the hallway, but it didn't block all the light. Likewise, for no reason I could see, there was a narrow window to the outdoors high up on the wall next to the bathroom. It had venetian blinds that couldn't be properly closed, so bright morning light fell through RIGHT where my eyes were when in the bed. * No safety bar in the proper place for the shower, and no non-slip anything. * No telephone in the room, so if I wanted to speak to the front desk, I had to go there. * The room wasn't cleaned and the bed wasn't made after my first night (of two).

In this case, even though we didn’t pay a higher rate I still expected it a little bit more. The room (room 328) was very dated. The carpeting was soiled , my bedside table had a big burn/bubbled up area that was about 2 inches wide. There was rust around the bathroom door frame and near parts of the tub. A little paint and a little caulking would’ve made the room look a lot better. There was also a funny antiseptic smell; almost as if they were trying to cover up odor that was embedded in the walls or carpeting. Another guest who is staying at the motel long-term due to a fire told us that we had the room worst room in the building and it had a spider infestation. I took what he said with a grain of salt until the next morning when I noticed two spiders on the bathroom vanity. We did not complain as we were only there for the night. The location was good as it was close to Route 15 and New Haven. On a positive note the breakfast was very yummy.

The bed was old and broken down, rug was dirty, the AC unit couldn't cool the whole room due to a wall in front of it and the shower tube had mold around it. One of the worst hotels we've ever been in. We checked out after 45 minutes and drove all the way home.

I could write about what others have before from my family’s own experience over Memorial Day weekend 2022: the rusty metal door frames, the water-damaged and peeling ceilings, the “interesting stains” on the rugs, the filth behind and under furniture, even that the hotel claims to be entirely smoke-free yet reeks incredibly like a 1990s bar of both stale and fresh cigarette smoke. Everywhere. But no, I’ll write instead of actual violations of safety, health, and building and fire codes. *USDA and FDA food refrigeration guidelines state that refrigerators shall be kept at or below 40-deg (F). By law, Grade A milk must be maintained at a temperature of 45 °F or below. On Monday, 5/30/2022, 8:34am, the refrigerator in the common breakfast area where hotel guests access milk, yogurts, and other perishables was observed to be at 54-deg (F) during the entire time present in the breakfast area (~45min), even rising to 55-deg (F). *The door of Room 204 did not close and latch on it’s own. CT Fire Code: 29.3.6.2.3 “Doors that open onto exit access corridors shall be self-closing and self-latching.” Failure to keep or maintain such doors exposes the hotel to liability for a “Class C immediately hazardous violation” in violation of NFPA 80: Standard for Fire Doors *While not necessarily in violation of CT Building Codes, the initial assigned room door did not have a fully functional security swing bar lock, with half of the hardware completely missing. While checking out the following morning, the front desk employee inquired how our stay was. I replied “Less than ideal”. When prompted by her question asking specifics, I brought up the cigarette smoke issue, as well as the above mentioned violations. As I continued describing these issues, the front desk employee’s demeanor changed as she began to develop a snide and snarky snarl across her face. Her only response was to say “Have a nice day”. I do not recommend this Clarion Hotel and Suites in Hamden, CT. At all. It is unhealthy, unsafe, and in clear violation of various health, safety, and building fire codes.

I just want to know how this place has three stars???HOW??? Everything about this experience was substandard. EVERYTHING! The room smelled like the 1970s - cigarette ash, weed, and general staleness. All of the breakfast food was freezer burnt and tasted gross. Finding a working ice machine was an entire adventure because only the one on the ground floor worked. I felt every spring in the mattress. I barely slept because was so afraid there might be bed bugs (there weren’t but still). Although the room was “clean”, it just felt GROSS. They severely need to update.

Staff were nice, but we were shocked by how little we got for the price we paid. One reason we booked here was for the pool and hot tub, which we weren’t told in advance was closed indefinitely. Towel rods and hair dryer holders were coming off the walls in the bathroom or missing completely. One of the beds was broken, and when my friends sat on the foot of the bed the whole thing tipped up and dumped them on the floor. When my cousins first arrived they were put in a room in the basement with no windows. The whole place just seemed sort of grungy too. It looks like it was nice at one time but the owners stopped keeping it up and are just running it into the ground.

Worst hotel experience I’ve ever had. The entire place reeks of pot, cigarettes, dirty. There are residents staying there who are scary. We’ve complained before and owner has no interest in improving it. We will never stay there again. Stay away!
