Quant inn with original old wooden floors. Bathroom was very nice and the room, although not real big is clean and nice. No TV in the room, you go to a common area in another building to watch. The people are very nice and try to help in any way they can. The bar, wine room and restaurant area are... More

INNKEEPER’S FAVORITE REVIEW
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 16, 2016 via mobile

Having the surname "Griswold" piqued our curiosity about this accommodation and the Essex, CT area. We visited for 2 nights and were simply amazed by the The Griswold Inn itself and the town that surrounds it. Visiting the Inn is like stepping back 240 years in time but with a modern twist. The Inn has managed to preserve the flavor... More

Stayed in the Hayden House for a recent wedding and everything about the Griswold Inn was superb! Rooms were spacious and comfy. Just the right amount of historical ambiance mixed with everything you would need for the modern times. Grounds are beautiful! The town is very friendly. Highly recommend staying here! The wine bar had different entertainment every night and... More

The History Makes it Great. The taproom on the weekends and Mondays... is the best! Artwork and smell of history. The food is average... no matter how hard they try it is average to boring. The rooms do not have TVs due to thin walls, ok anyway... nice to disconnect. I enjoy staying in the historic rooms. My only beef... More

I love eating a meal in an historic location, and the Griswold Inn certainly fits the bill. It is very interesting just to walk around the inside of the restaurant simply to view all the historic memorabilia, books, etc. on display. Atmosphere is pleasing; we were there at lunch so there were actually not very many people, therefore no noise... More

** My review is the restaurant only, not the hotel ** Winter here is just magnificent, but this trip, we ate outdoors on their patio. As much as I don't like cars driving by so close to our table, the food is what we came for. Reservations are recommended on weekends because this is a tourist attraction. I love the... More

My wife and I had talked about staying at the Inn for quite some time and finally had the time to visit Essex and book a room. My expectations were high as we have staid in many historic properties - I was a bit let down. I thought we were going to be in the Inn itself but were placed... More

We're sorry your recent visit was a bit disappointing. Now that you've been here, you probably understand the "lay of the land" but to clarify for others that may read this review...We refer to our property as a "campus": we have the Main Inn which houses our spirited Tap Room, our five historic dining rooms, our Wine Bar, and our... We enjoyed our stay at the Griswold Inn. The hotel offers a nice restaurant with good service. You can take a sailboat ride close by. The rooms are clean and they offer a sitting area if you would like to relax with a drink or tea. It is one of the oldest hotels in the country and offers a lot... More

Spent a night here with friends while seeing "sign of the Times" at the Terris Theater in Chester. The "Gris" has 32 rooms. We were in the Annex (Room 20). The room looked to be very recently renovated. It was on the small side with a nice but very small bathroom. It was fine for a night but could get... More

Having visited Essex and finding it a quaint waterside town, we decided to bring our friends from England here to enjoy it's charm. It seems this is one of the few places where the British enjoyed a victory. They have several buildings and we stayed in the main inn. It was quiet, clean, comfortable and charming. The beds most comfortable.... More
