The Boardman House is architecturally stunning and beautifully appointed (and very clean!!!) I travel frequently for work and always prefer boutique places over chain hotel (much more homey). I was so pleased the inn matched its photos and positive reviews. The heated floors and towel warmer in the bathroom were an unexpected treat! I have read the reviews about the proprietor not being available or responsive...I texted Mia and within minutes she was downstairs to meet me. She is an absolutely lovely woman and we had a wonderful conversation; we hugged when I left. I have stayed at many B&Bs throughout New England and I would rate this as my favorite. As far as no longer serving breakfast, it is stated on the website, and for me a non issue. This is a family run business (for over 20 years) and Mia and her husband do most of work, which I imagine is far from easy. I plan to return when in the area for work and plan to come for fun too. Highly recommend. I stayed in the Corner Room (as on a corporate budget), which was quiet and private.…
My daughter and I enjoyed this stay very much! We had a business meeting in Chester for two days and it was the perfect location which allowed for us to travel around the area easily! we so much appreciated the historic nature of the building and the preservation thereof. It is in a very small quaint community due to Covid some restaurants were not in operation which was disappointing but I think things are starting to improve. I thought the rooms were very well appointed and the owner was meticulous in making sure everything matched the period of the property. My only one suggestion would be even though it is Covid I think since the property is advertised as a bed-and-breakfast they could’ve put out at least some pastries or some easy to pick up snacks in the morning I think that would’ve really topped off our stay!…
Property is in pristine condition. Our suite was very clean and comfortable. The front porch was quite enjoyable to sit on and relax. The location is perfect as it is close to charming local towns and the Connecticut shoreline.
My gosh! Where do we begin! This place is an absolute gem! The gardens? Stunning. The management? Gets back to you within seconds! We are planning on coming for an entire weekend, just because of the beautiful stay- the cleanliness, the quality of the grounds- just beautiful. If you are looking for a romantic getaway, look no more!
My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Boardman House. Our room, the Garden suite, was spacious and comfortable. The service was wonderful, all our needs were met, and we also loved the location near the Connecticut River, state parks, and an easy drive to the shore. We highly recommend!
This is an elegant, historic home that used to be a Bed and Breakfast, but breakfast is no longer served. There is a small breakfast place called Higher Grounds that is about a 10-minute walk but we cannot recommend it. Two Wrasslin' Cats is a short drive and is much better for breakfast/lunch; it is not walkable. If you prefer to drink your meals, Swing Bridge Liquors is directly across the street from the House and is excellent. We stayed in the Boardman Room which is in the front of the house, thus subject to considerable traffic noise, especially during morning "rush hours." The room is clean, large, and well-appointed and has 3 chairs, a desk, and a king bed. The mattress was too soft/lumpy for us. The closet has those much-despised hotel-style, anti-theft hangers. Do East Haddam visitors steal that many wooden clothes hangers? The modern bathroom with shower is spacious and perfect. The parlor off the main entrance to the House has a small refrigerator for guest use, but is devoid of snacks/water/juice. A pitcher of room-temperature water sits on a nearby table. Only one bottle of water is provided in the guest room. Free parking is down a steep hill adjacent to the House. It is very difficult to safely exit both the side street from the parking lot and the carriage driveway in front of the house, as hedges block views of oncoming traffic. Strongly recommend that the owner install driveway mirrors in both places. She lives on the top floor of the House. Goodspeed Opera House is a short walk, as is a good ice cream shop. Nearby Gelston House for dinner was a big disappointment, so get in the car and head to Chester, CT for an excellent meal at River Tavern. Definitely worth the 15-minute drive.…
Beautiful place to stay in the quaint town of East Haddam. My wife and I chose the Garden Suite for our anniversary and we had a great stay! The check-in process was convenient, the room was luxurious, and there were plenty of places in the area for breakfast. Mia was kind and helpful when we had questions. Overall, we were very impressed and couldn't be happier that we chose to stay here during our special weekend. Highly recommend to those who prefer privacy and want a getaway in a stunning mansion!
I recently wrote a review about my dissatisfaction with my stay at the Boardman House. Not only was I contacted by the Host regarding my experience via email, but my review was removed from Trip Advisor. I did not contact the Host regarding the problems with my stay due to the negative feedback previous guests noted from their stay. I was so disappointed in this stay. I had an exciting weekend ahead of me. Previous guests noted lack of return phone calls and/or a hassle. It is interesting to note that negative reviews have been removed from Trip Advisor. I will again say this is a bed with no hospitality. This is definitely not a 4.5 rating.
We stayed 2 nights in the Corner Room. We arrived just after check-in at 3:30 PM. No one was there to greet us. We found an envelope taped to the front door in which a key and pre-printed instructions were enclosed. The room had a strange odor. There was a switch in the (very tiny and cramped) bathroom but we never learned what it was for. The bathroom though located on an outside wall, had no exhaust fan, which was, perhaps, the reason for the room’s odor. The room was furnished badly, 2 small side tables beside each side of the bed and a useless desk on the wall opposite the bed. Other than the tiny drawers on the side tables (which were not large enough to hold any items of clothing, there was nothing other than the tiny closet with 6 “you can’t steal these” hangars in which to place our clothes. We lived out of our suitcase which was placed on the floor as there was no other place to put it. This place is milking COVID for all its worth. It no longer serves breakfast. In fact, it serves nothing. We did not see a single staff person over the 2 days we were there. The room was not cleaned while we were there. The living room was utterly bare. No books, movies, magazines, tourist info. There was a pitcher of water and a coffee maker. No afternoon snacks like cookies or cheese and crackers like all the other inns serve. The dining room was a useless appendage with no chairs around a table with a worn tablecloth. The room was not air conditioned and the windows could not be opened. They had no screens either. This is no place to stay during the summer, notwithstanding the fan in the room. I would not recommend this place to anyone. Frankly, a chain motel would have been better and a lot less expensive.…
There wasn't anyone on-site during our stay, and when I email'd as instructed to request decaf pods since only caffeinated was on the keurig table, the response was "Unfortunately we are out of decaf pods. They are on order, but have not arrived yet. So sorry for the inconvenience." Especially at the high-end cost of the room I felt that answer was unacceptable and replied as much and requested that decaf somehow be made available. The next response was, "It seems you are not satisfied with your accommodations and we would be happy to refund you for the second night ($269+tax) if you check out before 11:00 AM." When I declined to check out early, the next response I got was, "No where does it say that we have decaf pods in the rooms, so if that is a requirement, you should have asked before making your reservation." Very snarky! Also, not only no decaf, no tea either, the ceiling-mounted heat lamp in the bathroom doesn't work and the wi-fi failed consistently when we tried to connect 2 iphones at the same time. Good luck if you book this place. There are other choices for staying near Goodspeed Opera House.…
