Villa Santai is a comfortable and relaxing holiday experience where you feel like part of the family. A small group of guests generally are generally surfing or fishing enthusiasts, who share the magic of their experiences on Rote Island. The accommodation is meticulously clean and comfortable. Dino, Sanchi, Jousef and all the staff are friendly, attentive and capable at this owner-managed resort.

Just returned from epic trip staying at Villa Santai. Its been a long time since I’ve been back to Rote and instead of staying at my usual place I tried Villa Santai. I’ve been all across Indonesia and nowhere has every box been ticked like this place. Breakfast lunch and Dinner were perfect served by Chef Sanchy. Communal style and delicious fusion of Western and Indonesian. I stayed in the Boa Bungalow. Had the best nights sleep in months. Mosquitoes haunt me in Indo and Santai gave me respite for my stay. The clever lay out means all guests have privacy and the best bar in Indo (I’m serious they should do Corona commercials there) is out the front if you’re feeling social and like a drink with your beautiful sunset. Bar attendant Orbit the Rote local proved himself adept at any drink and on a few nights people from all the other villas and hotels dropped in for his classic margaritas. My favourite place was the Gazebo. Shady and perfect for reading a book, sleeping or just staring at the beach, reef and distant surf. The gardens are immaculate with blooms of colour compared to some other places along the beach that look tired and unloved. The Host Deano brings over a decade of experience in this last frontier to make your stay seamless and I’m used to the difficulties travelling outside Bali (Sumatra, Java, Sumba,Flores) but somehow Deano’s experience helps you forget you’re actually in a remote part of Indonesia and the stress that entails. Did I mention the Surf?

Dino’s knowledge of the surf breaks, tides, wind etc makes sure your in the right place at the right time. Dino, Sharon & there staff always make you feel at home and it is never easy leaving. Great surf, food and bar with awesome sunsets, what more could you ask for. I’ll be back next year for sure. Fitzy

From the start to the end this 10 day surf trip was hard to fault. The info pre flight spot on and connections from Perth easy and Xfers sorted. The Villa was as depicted - clean, airy and spacious- and serviced twice a day. The food was mostly local with the odd steak burger for when we ate at the bar during the AFL games. The beer was always cold and plentiful and the staff and management go all out to make your trip amazing. Now the surf! T Land was smoking when we arrived at about 6ft throwing in the odd 7-8ft set - glassy mornings with solid offshore building through the day. This wave never stopped for 10 days but slowly dropped in size holding usually 3-4 ft before kicking again 8 days later to upwards of the 8ft mark. Options aplenty were presented to our group from the solid right at suckies, the fast and shallow tubes of Do’o, the glassy dark blue shacks of Boa and the double barrelled beauty of N’Dana’s mirrored breaks being the Jewel in the Crown. We had access 24/7 to scooters with board racks and two boats including the big rig to get us in the spots. With everything we experienced at Villa Santai, the indisputable advantage of staying here above all others is the local knowledge available to get you on the waves. Any resort can run the boat out the front but when the swell pumps the wind swings and the tide drains having Dino pull you from the lineup from one wave and put you in another miles away is epic. I was recommended to stay here by mates and will be doing the same to multiple more. Get amongst Villa Santai - the Jewel in the Nemberala and Besialu Crown! Dave - Australia
