The Bar Lazy J continues to be absolutely amazing. It is everything that you would want in a guest ranch experience and more. Located on the banks of one of Colorado's premier fly fishing streams, the main attraction is horseback riding. However, there are a ton of other activities (axe throwing anyone?) The staff is uniformly friendly and professional. You can drop your kids with the counselors after breakfast and not see them again until dinner. They will have the time of their lives.Speaking of which, the food is excellent. Even if you do not ride, you should go to the breakfast ride feast. Every evening there is a different activity - so you always wanted to learn to line dance - well this is your opportunity. A caveat - part of the philosopy of the ranch is "leave technology behind." The cabins are very comfortable, but rustic - no electronics of any kind. And cell phone use is discouraged. All in all a wonderful experience.…
Bar Lazy J is an all inclusive working guest ranch with just the right amount of "away from it all ranch life" combined with important comforts such as comfortable beds and soft linens and cabins big enough for a family to spread out. There is wifi available at the lodge which is a great way to gets kids, teens, AND us parents off of our devices and more present in the moments and memory making that happened here. All staff were friendly, outgoing and willing to do anything asked of them. Wrangler's were professional and confident and very good at working with those of us who weren't very familiar with horses. They took us from never riding a horse before to loping and exploring the adventurous rides. A family vacation like none we have been on before and many touches of *magic* throughout the week. A few magical moments were... seeing our 17 year old smile and talk to people that began the week as strangers, but who ended up being good friends by the end of our time at BLJ. Watching out 11 year old daughter who had never ridden a horse attend the kids club and become a confident and happy rider. Experiencing many "firsts" with our 13 year old who was old enough to do more adult activities - he tried trap shooting, zip-lining, archery, axe throwing, and riding a horse for the first time all in one week! We love to travel as a family and talk often about making lasting memories. We all agree that this trip was one that we will relive and tell stories from for many, many years to come. Our trip was with extended family that consisted of 6 adults and 6 kids ranging in age from 4-17.…
A ranch that made your vacation everything you want it to be. The owners are always involved and the staff was top shelf! The food was outstanding. I had dietary needs and they treated it so easily it really made a difference. The cabin I had was everything I would ever need and a porch that over looked the river. Clean, comfy and place to call home for the week. I really have nothing negative to say. Out this ranch from the the moment I checked in till when I left it was nothing but a positive vacation! Thank You BarLazyJ
I have dreamed of going to a dude ranch since I was a little girl. Well, I finally made it just before my 75th birthday and I couldn’t have been more pleased with my experience at the Bar Lazy J. The owners Cheri and Jerry are great people as are the whole staff. They are so accommodating to everyone and didn’t leave you wanting for anything. My 3 best friends and I had such a great time and when it was time to leave I felt as if I was leaving family. BarbN.
I traveled to the Bar Lazy J Ranch in June of 2020 with my two teenage sons and their friend. Seriously, we are seasoned travelers and I mean it when I say it just does not get any better than this. When you arrive at the ranch, you will somehow believe that you have been transported to the magic of the Old West and yet, with modern amenities the like of which you have never seen. The cabins are > 100 years old but modernized to make even the pickiest of travelers comfortable. The food is beyond delicious (and this from a NY foodie) and Chef Eddie doubles as a jewelry designer. Suffice it to say that the gift shop thrived while we were there. Cheri and Jerry (owners) invite you in and treat you like family for the duration. Ask for it and they make it happen. Everyone there (and I am only not naming other names because I will inadvertently leave someone out) is professional, pleasant, warm, and inviting. The horses and all the critters (donkeys, goats, sheep, zebu, dogs) are family too and their health and welfare is greatly valued by their human companions. The rides are tailored to your skill level but also adjusted when your skill level improves throughout the week. The extras are there precisely when you need them - massages, trap shooting, music, ziplining, and river activities. I can literally think of nothing that could be done to make this place more magical and magnificent!! We have already booked for next year!!!!…

We write this review with tears in our eyes reliving our recent adult week stay at BLJ. Having never been to a guest ranch before but always wanting to taste ranch life and horseback riding, we chose BLJ after 2 years of research. We couldn't have chosen a better place! BLJ is an authentic ranch, no Disneyland Amusement Park replica. It's the real deal oozing with hospitality and one of the most beautiful ranches on earth. Cheri & Jerry (Owners)...well they are charming, hospitable and caring from the moment you arrive until the moment you leave. Every day they eat with you, they participate with you,and get to know all their guests by first name. Always accommodating and never a negative word or can't do or won't do attitude. Tammy & Chad (Ranch Managers) have been there many years, live on the ranch with their beautiful children and take care of everything you need or want. If the daily schedule of things to do--ride, zipline, hike, fish,etc.--was not exactly what you felt like doing, the staff were flexible and made sure you were able to do what you wanted on any given day. The horses are absolutely beautiful and well cared for. Each and every one of the wranglers are real "cowboys and cowgirls" and totally committed to you, your horse, and your experience. The ranch crew and Chef Eddie were amazing. Fabulous meals with MORE than you could ever want and a Cookie Box that never goes empty. A favorite was the Breakfast Ride which we will never forget. Out to the high country, crossing the Colorado River, and sitting down to a real outdoor western breakfast in the mountains, by the river, with your horse, your new found friends, while listening to Wrangler Joseph play the guitar. You try to comprehend how Chef Eddie and the whole crew puts it all together so perfectly. The scenery is some of the best in the west. Spectacular high country, mountains, river and plateaus. Many guests have described their visit to BLJ as wonderful, fun, awesome, a great place to visit--which it is. It's hard to find the right words to describe it. We feel it has to be experienced. BLJ is a classic, one-of-a-kind, western ranch full of tradition cared for by the most wonderful people; Cheri, Jerry, Tammy, Chad, Chef Eddie, Christina, and each one of the entire staff (you know who you are). We think it's like no other place on earth. We LOVED our time with you, miss all of you, and look forward to our next visit.…
We stayed at the end of the family season and had a great time. Our daughter really enjoyed the kids program, which lets the kids go off together (with awesome wranglers) and allows you to decide how much freedom to give your kid. The kids had a great time. They rode (including loping), played games, fed the animals in the petting zoo, and swam. The adult program pairs you with a horse for the week and allows you to choose how often you want to ride, and how adventurous you want your ride to be. They allow a lot of loping for competent riders. They were also very flexible in accommodating special requests. We arranged a family ride with our daughter simply by asking (thanks Jasmine!). The accommodations are rustic but exactly what you’d want at a ranch. The cabins are western themed and clean and comfy. The main house is also a nice place to hang out and if you need WiFi, the only place to get it (enjoy the Internet prison). The owners and staff are all fantastic. We didn’t meet a single person who wasn’t friendly and helpful. They offer a variety of activities included in the price, and a few others at extra cost. There’s pretty much always something to do, but it’s perfectly acceptable to pull up a book by the river and do nothing. My daughter is already plotting her next visit. …
We just loved our week here. My husband and I visited for the first adult only week of the season and had just the best time - in many ways it exceeded our expectations. Gerry and Sherri who own the ranch are very hands on and really genuine and kind people who give a lot of support to their staff and the community. They have created a unique and ambience so that you really do feel part of a ranch family for a week. Typically there are around 28 guests in adults week which makes for a very warm and sociable environment. You also know that you are in very capable hands as Gerry and Sherri are also on the Board of the Dude Ranch Association and have been heavily involved in developing standards and policies for dude ranches. They also carry out quality inspections of other ranches. The riding, in wonderful scenery, is excellent with a choice of rides each day (including breakfast and lunch rides) to suit all abilities with opportunities for individual lopes for competent riders. With over 100 horses their is one to suit everyone and my allocated horse for the week was a star (which also happened to be her name!). They are extremely well cared for, responsive and in great shape. For those who don't want to ride all the time the ranch also offers guided hikes, fishing, zip lining and skeet shooting as part of the inclusive price. Rafting can also be arranged at extra cost. The ranch itself is over 100 years old with cabins overlooking the Colorado River. It's rustic but comfortable with lots of horsey stuff and just as you would imagine a ranch to be. There is a nice small pool on site with a few loungers, hot tub, gift shop, free laundry facilities, wemassage available certain days of the week and WiFi in the main lodge. I also, even as an adult, loved the petting farm, especially the miniature donkey. We also enjoyed the evening entertainment programme, which many ranches don't offer, from wagon rides to campfires, line dancing and saloon night with a faux casino. Food is good home style cooking and plentiful. Expect to put on a pound or two! BYO alcohol although you can buy reasonably priced bottles of beer or wine at the ranch. This is a very special place that really has it all and we hope we might get to go back again in the not too distant future.…
There is so much to offer, horse riding and white water rafting being a tiny part of what they do. They allow you to work with your horse, and play with other animals. They are all loving and caring and are always open to questions. They love to have fun. They love playing with kids and the adults can have their beverages. You can just relax or have an exciting day. There are endless memories and so much fun out here. Its worth the money and trip. Food is amazing. This place has pretty views. It really is heaven on earth.
