Detailed Reviews
Spent one night here in August and hope to return again for a longer stay in the future! Tom and Cindy who are the hosts, make you feel welcome from the time you arrive until your heading home. The location is very convenient as you can walk down to the river or into town with both being about the same time. Our room was very comfortable with access from the porch and interior of the house. There is a free happy hour provided along with musical entertainment from the very talented owner Tom. We didn't get to have the hot breakfast as we left early, but the continental breakfast was plenty and amazing!

We have stayed a number of places in Ouray and so far the Black Bear Manor is our favorite. We booked the King Suite and loved our room. Plenty of room but also a wonderful cozy feel. This place is located on a dead end street so it is very quiet and a great place to relax. Tom and Cindy made us feel very welcome. We happened to be the only visitors on the weekend we went (boy did some folks miss out!) but they still went all out for our breakfast the two mornings we were there. We had omelettes the one day and delicious lemon poppy seed pancakes the next with home made raspberry sauce! They also let us peek into some of there other rooms that were unoccupied so we could see what options there are for future stays. All are nice but some are quite a bit smaller than the suite but certainly still functional and comfortable.

We actually stayed here in April 2018 and the stay was so great that my wife and I still refer to it as the best place we've ever stayed and we frequently talk about the most comfortable bed and tastiest breakfast we ever witnessed. Only looking through the reviews now, 2 years later, did I notice that I never wrote a review (we were on a long honeymoon starting in Vegas and still had plenty of travelling to do after staying here).
I selected to stay here because of the great reviews and because of the name (we had a pet called 'Black Bear', hence my username)
Unfortunately I was quite ill with a bad cough but Tom and Cindy were perfect hosts, even providing a humidifier to try moisten the dry mountain air in the room. Speaking of the room, we were upgraded to the best room and it was amazing! It had it's own private entrance, a big bath, and a steam room. The bed was the best bed we've ever slept in. It was like laying on a cloud.
For breakfast we were asked the night before what we'd like so, apart from the fantastic cooked food, we were also provided with carrot cake muffins and cinabon swirls.
On one day we were hit by a huge snowstorm and found ourselves trapped in the room. Tom kindly provided us with his extensive DVD collection so we could just lie in bed watching movies. It was a great way to relax
If we ever find ourselves back in Colorado, this will be the first accommodation we will look to book.

Change of owners in the last year has effected the quality of their breakfasts. We had breakfast twice and the first one consisted of fried egg, cheese, and choice of bacon or sausage sandwich served with a potato pattie and grapes. The next day we were each given 2 slices of French toast stuffed with a little cream cheese and blueberries, a few of slices kielbasa, and grapes. My French toast was so crispy that i couldn't even cut it with a knife. Their coffee was delicious and fresh and served with choices of creamers and syrups. Previous owners did a much better job of breakfast and snacks. Otherwise our room was small but comfortable and clean. We could have used another chair as it only had one chair but the size of the room wouldn't allow for more furniture. Also our closet size bathroom had a folding plastic accordion door for privacy and the shower faucet was secured with masking tape. This was our fourth visit to the Black Bear Manor. It's nice and cozy but not what it used to be.

The location of this B&B was quiet and relaxing, and within easy walking distance to the main street area. Our room (#2) was very clean and well-appointed, and had two very comfortable beds. On the downside, there was a noticeable sewer-smell in the room and especially bathroom, which the manager indicated was likely coming from the tub drain. Apparently, her room (#1, next to ours) had the same smell. Our room also had a door that opened directly to the outside area where the hot tub was situated. Fortunately, we had no issues regarding any light or noise as no one used the hot tub after dinner time during our stay. Breakfast was fine but basic – nothing special. However, there were operational challenges during our stay in having one person try to serve 11 people at one sitting (the 8 AM one). Food and beverages tended to come out slowly, spread over 40 min. or so, and a bit disjointed. Not what we would have expected for the price, and not what we have experienced at other B&Bs during this and other trips around the US.

After 8 days of traveling around southwest Colorado, we spent our last night at Black Bear before heading to the airport. We felt that a b&b stay would fit well with the quaint surroundings of this small town. First the positive notes. Our room was easily accessible both through the lobby as well as through the sliding glass door to the outdoor hot tub and to load and unload the car. The king-sized bed was very comfortable with crisp sheets and overall the room was clean. Location was ideal as just a two block walk to Main St for all shops and restaurants. When we stay at a b&b, we have come accustomed to being greeted at check-in by the host(s), able to engage in conversation regarding the area and generally feeling welcome. Upon our arrival just after the 4pm check-in time, we arrived to an empty foyer with a piece of paper on a clipboard to sign up for a breakfast time and to advise that our key was left in our room. Which room is ours? We found an employee who was able to look up our name on his phone and advise that we were in Room #4. No “welcome”, “do you need anything”, etc., just basically self serve. Breakfast the next morning was the biggest disappointment. We easily could have gone to a restaurant in town but look forward to another opportunity to converse with the host and meet other guests. What we experienced was what appeared to be the barely awake maintenance man in sweats and a hoodie pulled over his head serving us what could best be described as a child’s plate. One wedge of a thin breakfast quiche, a spoonful of cubed potatoes and a slice of an orange for color. Again, no “good morning”, “how was your evening?”, “thanks for staying with us”. We did not partake in the beer and wine 30 minute happy half hour the night prior, but expect that it was more of the same. For the $300+ we paid for our one night in Ouray, we could have found a more hospitable host venue.

Spent Five nights in late June/early July. We decided to go on short notice, so our options were limited. Check-in was a. breeze and Tom Made us feel very welcome. The room was small but nice and very clean. Others have pointed out that there is no A/C, but that was not a big issue. We had a floor fan, a ceiling fan, and a screen door to the room and we were quite comfortable. Breakfast was wonderful every day, but it was late normal B&B practice (9am). If there is any thing I think made the stay less than perfect, this was it. By the time you were finished with breakfast, it was late in the day to start your activities. The happy hour on the deck every afternoon was a great added benefit and the live music was a real treat. Easy walking distance to many great restaurants and right on the river through town. I think we would stay again if we go back.

We had a great experience during our stay at the Black Bear Manor B&B. Our hosts Tom & Cyndi were really friendly and helpful. Had really nice full breakfasts each morning. We had a choice of an early continental breakfast or a later full hot breakfast. The building is in a quiet area by the river within easy walking distance of the main shopping street in Ouray. The nightly happy hour was a lot of fun. Tom played his guitar and sang. Would definitely stay here again.

We stayed here during recent visit to Ouray. Our room was clean and cozy and breakfast was excellent. Hosts Tom and Cyndi are warm and welcoming and even provide a complimentary happy hour every afternoon complete with musical entertainment. One thing to keep in mind- rooms can get pretty warm. A fan was provided which did help. Overall, we would definitely stay here again when traveling to Ouray.

Black Manor B&B was a great experience. Room was quiet and roomy. The location off Main Street was an easy to walk to restaurants and hiking. The options for a continental breakfast or full breakfast was wonderful if you wanted to get up early or lounge in bed awhile longer. Tom provided music for us nightly at their happy hour time. I would definitely visit again.

That would be up to the new owners to communicate what changes, if any, will be made.
The guests all did. The 2 hosts not, and they will let you know that upon checkin.the indoor common area us smallish w ppl rarely around. Nonone hangs there. The outdoor patio areas is where most ppl gather.
In the dining area -- which when weather is nice is only for loading up buffet or happy hour, as all go outside patio areas for seating -- everyone wears facegear. I dont recall if the serving hosts did.
I hope this helps.
I would contact Phil at the Black Bear Manor (thru the website) for most of your questions. As for routing, the time of year might matter. Google maps might be your best bet for any delays or weather obstacles. Once you get to Colorado it will be a beautiful drive.
