Detailed Reviews
We wanted an RV spot close to our family in Buena Vista. This location was perfect. If you want the river and trees, reserve the lower campground. We had a trailer and rented the deluxe back in spot. It was great. Loved the night views! The bathrooms are good, but bring quarters for the showers.

This was our second stop here. You can't beat electricity right next to the creek. The trees are great if you're by the creek. Always friendly peeps. Though over time we've noticed lack of attention to maintenance...game shed was just shut down instead of replacing broken machines; swing chain was broken on our visit and while the employees offered to repair he said the owner was just going to remove it :(

Response from CCCManager, Owner at Chalk Creek Campground & RV Park
Responded Aug 14, 2018
Hi Keith, Thank you for staying with us and taking the time to post a review. We recently took over ownership at the end of January, and we appreciate feedback that we can learn and grow from. I believe that the issue with the swing was a misunderstanding. When the chain on the baby swing broke, our plan was to remove the chain, not the swing, until we could get the whole swing replaced with a safer bucket swing. I apologize that this was not resolved during your stay, and for any confusion we may have caused. As for the game shed, when we inherited the old, only partially working arcade games, we were faced with the difficult decision of what to do with them and with that building. To save our guests the frustration of putting quarters into a machine that doesn't work, we pulled them out of rotation and installed a projector and pull-down screen to show movies. We are hoping to do further renovations to utilize that building for other purposes as well. We are also looking into getting the arcade games working again, but so far finding repair people and parts is proving difficult. We do hope that you continue to visit and enjoy our creekside sites, and the changes and updates that we will continue to bring to the campground.

This RV park has two sections. One is pretty much a typical RV park. Gravel full hook-up sites, most without trees. The bath house in this section is fantastic although the showers are coin operated and they ran out of toilet paper late in the evening - the only negatives from my perspective. The views of the surrounding mountains are gorgeous. And the park is very clean and well maintained. There are three cabins. I didn't see the inside but each had a nice porch with a view of the mountains and a gas grill. The staff were friendly and helpful.
The lower campground section is exquisite, however, and this is where you want to be. This is where all the tent sites are but there are also electric hook ups for RVs. All sites are shady and some are right next to the lovely creek. So top off your water tanks and ask for a site in the lower campground! I know I will the next time I'm in this area.

If I could give this place negative stars I would, this was by far the worst experience I have ever had. First, you have to pay for a shower. No big deal, have had to do this before. But, they say you have to pay for a shower because it "helps them maintain cleaner facilities". Not the case, there were used bandages in the shower, the toilets were never flushed, there was never any toilet paper or soap in the dispensers.
Nothing was ever good enough for the owners...kids didn't play in the creek the right place....didn't park in the right place. I would not recommend this place to anyone but I especially would not recommend this place for anyone with kids.

We looked at this campground online and chose a "premium electric site" which appeared in their map to be along Chalk Creek (it was). What wasn't mentioned was
the fact that our site was about 100' beneath a very busy highway - Colorado 285 which has heavy traffic most of the day and into the evening hours. We would not
go back for this reason.

The scenery was beautiful. The facilities were clean. The coin-op showers taught the youth that they could shower in less than an hour. The campgrounds were close to everywhere we went in Buena Vista. Everyone was friendly and helpful the only downside, was that the camping spots were really close. I would recommend bringing a pair of earplugs the block out the sound and an eye mask to block out the light. So you enjoyed the basketball court, horseshoes, and checking out other athletic balls.

I am hoping that by you reading my review that you don't make the same mistake I did and stay at this campground. It is obvious that the owners are either not campers or only care about the almighty dollar and I think both. We just stayed here for a week July 2022 with 4 families so 4 different sites. The full hookup sites are just a gravel lot with basically railroad ties separating them and in the "lower campground" the sites are so tight together that with just a truck camper, I could not even have the picnic table on site and had to park half in the road. People were parking in the road due to no room to park. The lower campground bathrooms had been out of order for many weeks, I was told due to a pump being down...so they had a couple of porta potties....really?? if that had been the owner's method of bathroom facilities, I bet it would have been fixed in a couple of days tops! You have to pay to use the showers and get this, they charged $3.00 for a 5lb bag of ice....I didn't even know they made that small of a bag. I would never stay there again and would encourage you to pick somewhere else

Chalk Creek is a great private campground that we have stayed at twice now on our way from Craig to Pagosa. It has 2 levels, the upper generally for RV's and the lower one wooded and either on or close to the creek. The lower level is most definitely NOT the usual RV parking lot! They escorted our 35 foot MH down there with no problem, and we found the site impeccably groomed and ready for us. There is only power in the lower campground, but lack of sewer, water and TV was more than made up for with the peaceful babbling creek. There was easy access to the dump station up top on the way out. Management is super friendly and accommodating.

Just an FYI the management is not flexible in any way whatsoever regarding making changes to reservations. I made and paid for a reservation for last night and had an unexpected emergency to take care of so wanted to switch to tonight, the campground is half empty, i understood a no refund policy but allowing me a credit to stay the next night is pretty crappy. He got $45 from me, i I was there less than 15 minutes. This is not a big corporation it's a family business who had the Option to be accommodating they chose not to says a lot about a business to me. I will be choosing another campground next time.

This was the worst experience that I have had at a campground.
All of the people that work there were extremely rude. When myself and my family were talking late in the evening, the lady came down and said that our party had to leave. She was not in any way polite nor would she listen to any of my party speaking to her. In addition, she used the F*** word to a 7 year old child. I recommend that if you want a pleasant experience while camping that you stay away from this campground. I would recopmmend to this lady that she try to be polite and just ask people to quiet down if they are disturbing anyone else. My party had 6 RV's there, one's that she will never see again.
