Over the years I always looked with great interest at the 1899 Inn when we drove through La Veta. This year decided to spend a few nights for our anniversary. Jill is a fabulous hostess and the La Veta room was exactly a perfect fit for a couple of days to relax and enjoy ourselves. The house is so solid and quiet we both fell asleep in no time. And if anyone likes old-fashioned Popovers...OMG!!! I live in Colorado and stopped trying to make finicky baked goods 20 years ago out of sheer frustration. I have had Popovers in higher end restaurants over the decades and, without a doubt, Jill's are the very best I have ever eaten. I highly recommend a stay here.
While on a leaf peek trip in southern Colorado we stayed at this B&B. Not only is the town A sweet location for the turning Aspen, the 1899 was a really nice place to stay. Clean, historic, quiet and charming this was the perfect place to lay over on the trip. You will not be disappointed.
Attention to detail is unsurpassed, fresh flowers, filtered local pure delicious water, individually hand ironed sheets, farm raised free range eggs, homemade muffins, cooked eggs great, wonderful discussions. I did not want to leave, will be returning many times over. Hostess was delightful Houston
We stayed in the cottage out back for 5 nights in September 2018. The house is historic; the cottage is not, but it does have decor to make it feel in character. We stayed out there to have more space and because we could have our dog. There is a large bedroom, a kitchen/eating/living area, and a bathroom with tub/shower. The kitchen has utensils, dish towels, etc. -- a very nice set up. Hosts offered to clean and straighten the entire cottage every day, just as if we were in the main house. The cottage had parking spot right next to it, off the street, which was a bonus. We ate breakfast every morning in the sunroom with guests from the main house. The meal and service at breakfast was excellent -- it varied every day with fresh offerings, and there was always plenty. The kitchen worked to accommodate visitors who requested special menus. The owner is a stained glass artist, and there are wonderful works in both the main house and cottage. We would definitely stay again and recommend this place to anyone who likes the personal, B&B experience. We also liked that it was right in town near all the attractions. La Veta is small enough that you can walk all over, but not all the streets are paved. Only caveats: There is no air conditioning, so be prepared for fans with open windows if the weather is warm. Also, there are no blackout blinds/curtains in the cottage, so the light will for sure wake you up when the days are long. The wi-fi works great in the main house, but it does not get through the stone walls to the cottage.…
I have now stayed at the 1899 Inn on two occasions. The Inn itself is a lovely historic stone building. The accommodations offered are rooms with a private bath, rooms with a shared bath and a sweet cottage with a bedroom, kitchen and sitting area. The Inn is located on Main Street in the center of the historic downtown. The proprietor, Jill, is lovely, accommodating, a great cook, and a great resource for local activities including hiking, biking and town events. The breakfasts are from locally grown foods and are freshly made and delicious. The common sitting areas are light, airy and comfortable.
