The dorm room was on a kind of rooftop with a good breeze coming through, which kept it cool in the hot weather. Really nice layout and good place to meet other travellers. The staff at Tanzanite were some of the nicest I've ever come across - really genuinely friendly! My phone broke and one of the members of staff managed to fix it somehow and didn't even charge me, which was amazing :)
The hostel is cheap, clean, sociable and in a great location however two of the girls I've been travelling with had a bad experience when getting a "full body massage." I was hesitant to post this review because I didn't want to cause damage to this business but I have already emailed the hostel and received no reply so thought this was the best way to raise awareness for any future female guests who might enquire about getting a massage here. The girls I am travelling with waited for their appointment but were not informed that their massage would be from a male (one of which was the manager of the hostel) nor aware they would not be in the same room. Both of the girls felt very uncomfortable with the manner of the massage due to inappropriate touching but felt too awkward to discuss it with the men afterwards. I'm not sure if the men working at this hostel got confused with the meaning of a full body massage and took it quite literally, but I wanted to inform them now that the first thing you must do is make sure that you tell girls if it is a male that will be massaging her firstly and make sure she is comfortable. Secondly, if she does agree you must be very respectful and look out for any signs or indication that she is uncomfortable. I don't want to put anyone off staying at this hostel because the accommodation is a completely separate matter and I know many people staying there would not have this problem as not everyone gets a full body massage. However, I felt the best way to address this issue was to leave this review to raise awareness and hopefully inform the men working here when they see this that the massages were not appropriate, and warn any future customers of experiencing the same problem. …
Clean rooms and genuinely kind staff. It is located conveniently next to many restaurants and markets and the beach is just across the street. It is neighboring Club Tropicana if you feel going dancing in the evenings.
Definitely a place you should visit if you are in Arugam bay! The food is delicious and well prepared. It is also good value for money. The kitchen is the first thing you pass when you enter the restaurant, so you can follow the cooking while you wait for you meal. The staff is very friendly and inviting. We also went there the next morning, to grab some rotti for our bus trip to Trincomalee. Here we ended having a long conversation with the chef - a really friendly man!
