Detailed Reviews
We recently took an "ad hoc" trip up the Mendocino Coast and visited the tiny village of Westport. To our pleasant surprise we were able to get a room at the Westport Hotel. If you are looking for a place to stay on the Mendocino Coast I highly recommend this beautiful place! More reasonable than Mendocino or Fort Bragg, and more quaint by far. The restaurant is superb, the bar is fun and the rooms are perfection. We had our own private balcony overlooking the headlands. Recently renovated, this hotel has it all. We wore our bathrobes and slippers thoughtfully provided in our room to walk a couple of doors down the hallway to a sauna. Fantastic heat and plenty of space. It allows you to have a sauna in private with a "Occupied" sign to place on the door. Early morning we were treated to coffee and home made blueberry scones with fresh fruit in our room. Between 9 and 10 they serve breakfast to order in the charming dining area. Windows look out on the ocean everywhere. Frankie the cat stays outside and is incredibly friendly. The manager is charming and extremely helpful. We felt welcomed and pampered. It was truly the perfect B&B experience. Can't wait to get back there! And we own a B&B. We couldn't have done it any better. Thank you for a wonderful time.

My stay at Westport Hotel was wonderful. The Lodge manager Kayla was so welcoming and treated me like family. The homemade hot scones and coffee (delivered on a silver tray to my room) were the perfect way to start my day followed by a delicious big breakfast downstairs in the charming dining room. Kayla suggested a morning hike along the bluffs that had gorgeous views of the Pacific Ocean. That night I had perfectly grilled fish tacos and a lovely local wine in the pub. There was live music and a great atmosphere. Later that night I watched a spectacular meteor shower from my balcony. This hotel is a gem and I will definitely come back. Five stars!

+1
The Westport Hotel was our base for our getaway to the northern California Coast. We stayed in the hotel on nights when the Old Abalone Pub was open, so the hotel met all our needs. A tray of tea and scones and fruit was left outside our room at 8 am, and then there was a full breakfast (omelette and potatoes or quiche) offered downstairs in the dining area. The Pub menu offered vegetarian options and local wines, which we appreciated. There was information at the desk about many nearby hikes on the coast and it was enjoyable just to walk on the headlands above the beach at sunset (blackberries were ripe!). We had an amazing sunny day and a clear night so that we could see a sky full of stars - before the fog returned. Hotel is quaint and rooms are charming. Staff is very attentive and friendly.

Westport is a beautiful remote place on the North Coast. It feels much more remote than it really is. (three and a half hours from the Bay Area via Laytonville). This section of the coast, located 45 minutes north of Mendocino, just before the Lost Coast, gets light traffic.
In the middle of this little town is the beautifully renovated Westport Hotel. We have stayed here a few times over the last few years, and this is simply our favorite hotel. It is very elegant, small (only six rooms),immaculately clean and comfortable, breakfast downstairs (after scones and coffee have been delivered earlier to your door) is delicious, and the staff and owners are really kind and friendly.Oh, and no TV or phones either. You wont want them there, and if you do, you may not be in the right place.
The steps down to the beach and ocean with its huge rocks and arches are a hundred yards from the hotel. Beautiful hikes, rivers and beaches are close by. Just hanging out at the hotel, if fogged or rained in is pretty nice too.
The restaurant, (which used to be great) had not yet reopened when we were there at the end of June, but they were getting there. That would be great as otherwise you have to drive to Fort Bragg to get a sit down dinner.
This is a very romantic location and a very romantic hotel. When you need to get away from it all for a few days, this is a great place to go.

My husband and I wanted to get away for two nights. He loves Mendocino, so I was game to go. Hubby was in charge of getting the room. We thought he had reserved two nights at the Westport Hotel. I had read a brief blurb about it in a recent Sunset magazine and it sounded like an interesting alternative to Mendocino, and just a little further up the coast. When we arrived at the hotel, it turned out that hubby had made an error, our reservation was not at the Westport Hotel.
Not to worry- we had the most incredibly gracious assistance from Talerra (sp?), who we had interrupted from preparing the rooms for that day. Talerra spent at least 20 minutes phoning all over the area, trying to figure out where our reservation was held. She never once pushed that we stay at the Westport, but did inform us that they had a room for that night, but not for the next. Talerra handled everything so smoothly that she was one of the main reasons that we wanted to stay at the Westport Hotel. So we booked one night and were so glad that we did.
Our room wasn't ready yet, so hubby and I took a walk up the highway and looked at the ocean. The boulders on the beach below us were quite interesting formations. (The next morning we took a run where we had walked- quite invigorating.) When we were settled in our room it was a little early to eat, so we sat in the parlor room in front of the gas fireplace and read. It was completely relaxing to sit and do nothing but enjoy our surroundings with no phone or t.v. to interrupt.
We stayed in room #4, which had a queen bed, bathtub and deck with ocean views. The room was pristine in cleanliness. In fact, I don't believe I've ever stayed anywhere that was as clean as this room. The walls were painted a soft sage green, the comforter was white and fluffy, the room decor included a minimum of furniture, but what was there was lovely: an antique armoire, side table and two chairs with a shared footrest. The darker green carpeting looked new, and I think I could have eaten off of the bathroom floor tiles- everything was new, fresh and sparkling clean.
For dinner, we ate pub grub at the adjoining restaurant. Our starters were delicious crab cakes (really, they were crab balls) and a spring roll, both tasty and not at all greasy. We were served by three, excellent waitstaff who saw to our needs but were unobtrusive. Instead of the main entrees, we decided to go for fish and chips. The fish was the most tender I've ever had in a fish and chips combo. Dessert was a concoction of ice cream over a macaroon, drizzled with chocolate sauce...yum!
Two pieces of chocolate from the Mendocino chocolate company were at our bedside, one milk and one dark. The following morning we had homemade scones, tea, coffee and fruit left outside our room, pre-breakfast. When we came down for breakfast, we were served juice, a homemade biscuit, fruit and an omelet. I'm amazed we still had room to eat, after the scones.
This is a place that is tended with loving care by everyone who owns/works here. It really shows that the people of the Westport Hotel want you to have a completely relaxing experience, very different from the everyday hustle and bustle. If you want to "check out" of a busy urban life...the Westport Hotel is the place to go and do nothing for a little while. I don't think you'll be disappointed- we weren't!

I booked a Saturday night here for my husband's birthday after reading the reviews. We had a room with a shared deck that overlooked the ocean. The room itself was very nice with soft colors and was extremely clean. There is, however, a large electical line right in front of the deck which distracted from the view quite a bit in my opinion. But, my real disappointment was finding out Sunday morning that a hot breakfast is not included for Saturday night guests. I thought we were going to have a real bed and breakfast experience and after reading all the reviews about breakfast, I was really looking forward to that part of it. Come to find out, Sunday morning guests only get scones (which were dry and not that good). Bummer.

Fantastic hotel in a great location - across the road from the Pacific Ocean. Friendly staff, excellent food and views. Could not have been better. Highly recommended for couples. Better than it looks in the pictures

The Hotel itself is really nice, lovely and clean rooms, the staff is very friendly and the Food is simply outstanding for a small village. In fact i ate worse for far more money in "hip" Locations in large cities. The wine list is also quite nice given the size of westport.
Only downside is the noisy kitchen. The van is so loud, that your floor is going to vibrate. They turn the van off, when the restaurant closes though. But do yourself a favor and book a room with a distance from the kitchen, than it will be a true 5-star-experience.

We arrived about 5pm, (observing the request to arrive before 6pm, which had neccesitated not lingering on the way, which was disappointing as the coastline is so beautiful), looking forward to our afternoon tea after a long drive from Sausalito. There was a notice pinned to the door apologising that there would be nobody there to receive us and giving us instructions to gain access involving digits of phone number used for booking. The hotel was completely deserted, no staff, no other residents. It was a surreal experience. One of the downstairs exterior doors was unlocked. We were advised that teas were currently only served on a Saturday, the restaurant was currently closed and we could purchase food from the local store. The nearest restaurant was 15 miles away in the direction from which we had just driven. The staff who arrived the following morning were friendly and welcoming and served a delicious breakfast. We were told that the restaurant was closed until a chef of sufficient calibre was found. As other reviewers have noted the hotel has stunning views and the rooms are extremely well appointed but the basic rules of hospitality were not observed and for us it basically just did not live up to our expectations. The owner, Dorrine arrived as we were leaving but simply greeted my husband briefly but gave no apology or explanation.

Dear Guest, We would like to apologize for being unable to greet you upon arrival and that our self-check in procedure didn't make you feel properly welcomed. Unfortunately, every once in awhile we cannot staff our desk for a few hours. We look forward to being able to serve dinners in the next month and will be more accommodating to guest's evening arrival and dining needs. Thank you for your patronage and review.

We picked the Westport Hotel for an overnight stay primarily because it was about halfway on our itinerary from San Francisco to Bandon, Oregon. But what we got was so much more than a mere overnight stay. This is a *beautifully* redone old hotel, complete with interesting artwork, lovely garden, very nice hosts, and lots of little tasteful extras. The hosts offered offered us beverages when we arrived, and there were fresh flowers, a bottle of water and Mendocino chocolates waiting for us in our room. We had brought take-away salads with us for supper, and ate them on the balcony (room 4) facing the Pacific Ocean.
Breakfast at the Westport is in two stages: First is coffee, wonderful fruit and scones delivered to our room at 7am (usually at 8am, but we were on East Coast time and requested an earlier delivery, which Lee and Doreen cheerfully accommodated). Then, in the lovely dining area with great views of the garden, we got made-to-order omelets (amazing -- the best I've ever eaten), more coffee and juice.
The bathroom was spotless, the shower was great, and there was a little cellophane-wrapped loofa for us that we took when we left.
A really great plus was the location of the hotel -- directly across the road was a town property with a path to the beach with interesting sea stacks which were great for photographers.
