I keep reading the varying reviews, and I believe I see the problem. This is a classic old hotel. It is not so dissimilar from classic old pre-war hotels in NYC or Chicago. The property was built decades ago, and the structure shows it. If you are looking for a breezy, sunlit, high ceilinged hotel, this is not for you. However, if you are looking for something along the lines of a classic high end NYC pro-war hotel, or even the Coronado, this place is for you. Rooms were built smaller than they are now. Things were made from bricks and mortar, so changing floor plans is harder, etc. Someone co.mented that the shower seemed like it was from the 1920s. That's the point. If you want the giant glass enclosed shower with water jets coming at you from all angles, go elsewhere. The Chateu Marmont is ageless, but not for everyone. You pay for the the legend and service along with amenities, unlike answer hotel. I cannot speak for rude service, we have always had good service there, but we don't spend a lot of time in the room. Of course there are aberrations in the level of service, but that happens everywhere. I do agree it can be overpriced, especially some of the add-on services. And the room prices can vary wildly and often you can get rooms for much cheaper if you dig through some of the booking sites and play with your dates just a little.…
We’re Australian so are pretty relaxed travellers. We were in LA with friends from NYC doing a bit of shopping nearby and thought we’d pop in for drink at the hotel bar. We were greeted in the foyer by the most pretentious, rude women I’ve come across in almost 30 years of travel. We said we’d come for a drink and something to eat in the outdoor lounge. Our ‘hostess’ looked at us with some distain, rolled her eyes and physically sighed loudly saying ‘we don’t take walk ins’. Interesting as inside wasn’t busy. With more literal huffing and puffing from said ‘hostess’ she disappeared outside. On her return another person greeted us normally and we we’re shown to an outside table where very friendly staff actually made us welcome. Drinks were great and the hotel is worth a visit given it’s location and history but lose the attitude at the door blondie as you’re hurting your brand and look foolish in the process.…
Lovely meal and good value for money. Relaxed atmosphere where you can just chill and enjoy the foot and wine (both of which were excellent). Much smaller than I had imagined but a classic venue all the same with the glamour of old Hollywood. Would definitely recommend
I first stayed here 20 years ago and thought it was tired but cool....I have stayed in all the other Balazs properties and wrongly assumed that this place would have been brought up to standard..... WRONG. Service is non existent, whoa betide you if you have luggage. The restaurant and bar are cool , but that’s where it ends. The plumbing, heating and sound insulation would not be out of place in a 3 rd world country. How dare you charge $600 for this rubbish.
The CM is one of those places that is frozen in time but in a good way. I wanted to move in here. Every detail is full of care and it all so feels wonderfully nostalgic. Swimming at midnight, a fridge full of champagne, there is nothing like it.
