My sister and I planned a weekend trip to visit family in Sonora so I booked a 4 night stay at the Gunn House. The day before we were to fly out from Chicago my sister tested positive for COVID. I was also exposed. We immediately started cancelling hotel car rental and flight reservations. We were successfully refunded flight and car rental but to my dismay, Gary, at the Gunn House insisted on charging us 2 nights ( $298). Eventually he changed the charge to 1 night but that was still $159. I even asked if he could just put the $159 towards a credit for our future stay since we knew we would be making the trip in the near future but he said he does not do that. He insisted that their refund policy was clear and thats the way they run their business regardless of COVID and hung up on me. No where at any time when I made the reservation did I hear the no cancellation policy for COVID related issues . I guess I should have been wiser when I made the reservation and asked the question.…
There is no doubt this place use to embrace it's guest in the past. There is some lasting charm of the previous owners. The current staff/owners are very kind but the facility needs major TLC. Several of the outdoor lights do not work, tile in our bathroom is cracked and the porch is leaning (uncertain if it is safe to stand on) and that is just a small list of repairs needed. Cleanliness is questionable. When we arrived they raved about their breakfast but the breakfast casserole was subpar and not fully cooked. The rest of breakfast consisted of funfetti cake, strawberry cake, carrot cake and cold corn muffins. Along with cereal, breads and diluted orange juice. No refrigerator or access to microwaves but this was not advertised. Pool was nice but we had to scoop out leaves and bugs to get in. This place has so much potential but it really needs to renovated badly. If you are just looking for a place to rest your head and don't care about the ameneties and breakfast it will suffice. Otherwise I suggest staying elsewhere until some care is put into the property.…
The staff is great, rooms are cozy, beautiful old historical building. The breakfast room is beautifully decorated . The only issue I saw was; under the bed needs to be vacuumed also . The owner family was very friendly and helpful .
DO NOT STAY HERE! If I could give 0 stars I would! They charged me $250 for a room with a full size bed and a roll away bed which I had to pay an extra $35 for. The most ridiculous thing is that the hotel manager had me and my friend follow him around the property to find a roll away bed for 10 minutes with no avail. When the roll away bed was found WE the guests had to carry the bed to our room ourselves. This is completely unheard of to charge people extra money for a roll away and have the guests carry it to the room. To make matters worse the manager didn't provide us sheets or blankets to cover the roll away until being asked 3 times. We then had to set up the roll away bed ourselves while the manager simply stood there and watched and didn't offer a hand. Not only was the experience with the roll away bed horrible, but the room was even worse! The carpet was covered in this sticky and glossy substance and the cabinets were filled with trash, dirt and dust. Clearly hadn't been cleaned in months if not years. The restroom had a horrendously loud fan and the tiles above the shower were molding. The walls all around the room were also marked up with the paint chipping off. Finally, breakfast was promised at 7:30am the next day and that was the one thing we thought they couldn't screw up. Of course they managed to screw that up as well as when we arrived at 7:45am for breakfast we were told we had to wait another 15 minutes which we didn't have. The only reason we stayed at the place was because we just needed a place to crash for the night on New Years and other hotels were all fully booked and we didn't want to have to sleep in the car. Although after our stay it was probably a better option to sleep in the car and save $250.…
If you are going to Sonora, California or just need a night or longer to stay I recommend the Gun House Hotel. The rooms are clean, warm and very comfortable. Our shower had hot water amazingly fast. We stayed two nights and enjoyed our stay and the hotel is in walking distance to everything. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The morning breakfast is filling.
This property has some nice touches that you might not expect from an economy option. There is some historical decor on the lower level, nice verandah that wraps around the bulk of the property, a breakfast room and a small pool. Our room was a backside upper level (would recommend as the main street in front is extremely busy and often congested). It had a bit of decor, lots of blue. A "library theme". Yes it is true that while some of the vibe is an older / historic building - which is fine - some small updates are needed. A few cosmetic blemishes, knobs, etc. One thing that needed attention in our room was the bedside lamp which had no on or off switch, so we had to unplug it. But it's small stuff overall. They showed pride of property in the pool gardens and the historic lower level displays. so that was nice. I get the sense that the rooms are quite different here. Some appear as though they would be very dark as they are recessed or on the low level. Some are very open and bright. So do note your preferences if you book. Overall please recognize that in terms of Sonora this is maybe more of a budget option. But it is really pretty solid , and I would stay here again and recommend to others.…
We stopped here overnight on the way to the Eastern Sierra. Old and outdated, the rooms were nonetheless clean and comfortable. The pool was just with our kids needed, and breakfast Included a homemade cheesy egg dish and little muffins - a pleasant surprise! We will definitely stop here again.
I booked a "back queen" room, as shown in photo below. Room we got had no natural light, was damp, smelled liked mold, had exposed rough tile into the bathroom, stains on the carpet. Rattly air conditioner, darkened glass on door and windows allow no natural light through. Apparently they won't guarantee your room type if you book through their website. I was told that I should have called to guarantee that I'd get the type of room I booked. Luckily we were able to change rooms after one night, which made a huge difference, so it really depends on the room you get. Pool is nice and there's a nice breakfast every morning. It's difficult to reach any staff during the day--the office is unstaffed for hours at a time, no one answers the phone, even texting the manager gets no reply.
We've stayed at the Gunn House many times prior to this visit. This was our family's first stay at the hotel under its new ownership. Overall, it was adequate, but just that. Rooms and hallways really needed a good cleaning and some maintenance wouldn't hurt, either. (For example, we had one working light bulb in our bathroom.) One of the reasons to stay here was always the amazing breakfast of homemade pastries and an egg casserole prepared fresh each morning. The owners really need to put some more effort into this as, while they're trying to do something similar, it's just not the same. I'm sure if you checked into this place you'd probably think it was a fine continental breakfast when compared to other hotels. (Except you'd wonder what the deal is with the Funfetti cupcakes for breakfast.) I guess I'd really give the Gunn House 3.5 stars. Gary, one of the owners, was really nice and helpful and the place still maintains its funky historic charm. Some attention to detail and effort would really go a long way toward making this an amazing place again.…
I booked one night in a side room two weeks before a road trip my family was taking. When we arrived after traveling through the mountains with no solid reception, the hostess was friendly. The room she gave us (Room 11) was front and center, not what I had reserved. Had we gotten the room I had reserved perhaps my review would be better. The doorknob and lock on the door was janky. And loud, no way to quietly enter or exit the room while others tried to sleep if you wanted to sit on the porch. At first I couldn't even get in, afraid whatever I did would break the knob out of the door. I had to get her to show me how to jiggle the key while simultaneously turning the knob and pushing in the door. This is not historical charm; this is bad hardware. The shower pressure never went from bath tub mode to shower head even after turning the center knob all the way. It was a bath faucet "shower" for me. (We informed the hostess at breakfast that morning.) Again, not historic charm, just bad maintenance. The reservation had one price and my credit card bill after checking out had another, more expensive one. Was it because we got a different room than what I originally reserved and were quoted on? I put my young kid on the reservation but did they suddenly decide to charge me after the fact? (There were two beds in the room so nothing was brought in.) Is it a mandatory housekeeping tip (I left one in the room)? I don't know. I emailed the address on the reservation after seeing my bill and haven't heard back yet on the reason.…
