When my wife's family booked this trip to Marble Mountain Ranch I was skeptical. I'm a beach guy and July is prime time for surfing and lounging at the beach. Heading off to Nor Cal and the heat wasn't my idea of fun. Also, I'm not really a horse guy. They're fun to pet. I don't mind admiring them from afar, but I'm not all that interested in them. With all this in mind, Marble Mountain Ranch was an absolute blast. Doug and Heidi Cole and their family having been running this ranch for decades and they've got the whole system wired. There are plenty of planned activities to keep everyone busy, but not such a hectic pace that you're looking forward to a vacation from your vacation. Mornings included horseback riding activities and shooting lessons. Afternoons were spent white water rafting. My family opted for individual kayaks, and it was great! I'd always wanted to try white water stuff and I'm glad I did (it's still not as fun as surfing, but it is a blast). The meals were delicious and the food was plentiful. I'm a pretty big guy (too big to ride a horse, in fact, hehe) and there was always enough to eat. While my review in recapping the activities and meals is pretty similar to others I've read here, I did want to comment on what I think makes Marble Mountain a special place to vacation. You can ride horses at lots of places. You can ride down a river at lots of places. What made Marble Mountain memorable for me was getting to know the Cole family, the staff, and the other guests. Perhaps we just got lucky, but everyone really seemed to get along and enjoy each other. There are plenty of opportunities to get to know folks during the week. Doug sets up a campfire each evening and there are numerous Adirondack chairs set out in a circle. All you had to do was grab a chair and start a conversation. Obviously a different group of guests might have changed my experience some, but the Cole family and the staff were awesome and I loved all the different chances I had to chat with them over the course of the week. I have a distinct memory of many conversations with everyone at the Ranch, but my quick favorites were Heidi being surprised that I was a philosophy teacher, not a contractor, Taylor talking about going off to college in a few weeks, Caroline training her horse and what it takes to be a great barrel racer, and Mignon telling me about the small place in Arizona that she grew up in. The most special conversation I had was when Lauren came up to me at Karaoke night, after singing a 3rd song and acting like a fool, and told me that I had a really fun family. That really meant a lot to me (and I thanked her for it) and I'm still happily enjoying the memory of that comment. I wish Doug and Heidi and the whole family the best and thank them and the staff for a wonderful, restful vacation. If you've read this far into the review, book a week and enjoy! P.S. I'm proud that I'll always be the first guest (one of 2) that Taylor rowed through the Dragon's Tooth rapid! You did great, Taylor! Good luck in college!

Earlier this month, we did a family vacation to Marble Mountain Guest Ranch in Northern California. The owners, Doug & Heidi Cole have been entertaining families at their facility for over thirty years, and I don't exaggerate when I state they have this down pat. Some of our family learned how to horseback ride with expert training from their staff, and enjoyed riding every day we were there. We also enjoyed white water rafting three days, with each day increasing in rafting difficulty. Other activities included target and skeet shooting, hatchet throwing, archery, and ATV riding. Their staff welcomes those with little to no skill levels in these activities, and are great teachers that make participants feel confident in attempting these activities. The peace and serenity of the property lends to a most enjoyable time. The facilities are well maintained, and the food is excellent. we got three square meals daily, planned and prepared by Doug & Heidi. Totally recommend this weeklong experience for anyone wishing to "get away" from the chaotic world were living in.

If you are looking for a western themed summer vacation for the whole family, you have found it at the Marble Mountain Ranch. From the ranch buildings and cabins, to the activities, food and staff, everything is top notch. Located off the grid in a remote mountainous area of northwest California near the Oregon border and the town of Happy Camp, the 55 acre ranch has the scenic Klamath River as its front door, allowing it to offer white water rafting along with its horse program. It was hour long horse rides and lessons, and gun education, in the morning, and river rafting and kayaking (3 days) and ATV riding (1 day) in the afternoons. Activities were geared for all ages, and with a limited number of guests, it allowed the friendly staff to get to know you during the five night, six day stay. In between activities, it was delicious ranch style meals, camp fires and quiet moments among the trees and mountains. Be prepared for hot days, cool mornings and mosquitoes. Don’t expect the ritz, but the lodging and main lodge are up to date and stylish, and in the western theme. Heidi and Doug Cole, who have been doing this for 30 years plus, appear to have hit on a good model for all ages of the family; from grandparents down to grandkids. There is never a dull moment, but you could lay back and relax at any time at their pool or in your air conditioned cabin or house. Heidi prides herself (deservedly so) on her breakfasts, dinners and desserts, served buffet style, using many items from her garden in her dishes, as well as making many from scratch. Doug barbeques and keeps most the activities moving during the day and evening hours. My wife and I took our eight year old granddaughter, and all three of us had fun and a wonderful time.

FULL value in time spent together. Thoughtfully planned daily schedule with variety of activities. Afternoons were spent river rafting and included kayaking and a canyon creek hike to a double waterfall. SO cool. Schedule also included trail riding, arena activities, a shooting range, and a variety of ways to spend the evening relaxing. Excellent food and an overall "at home" atmosphere in a beautiful mountain setting. The shooting range was packed with instruction, variety, humor and history. Guest capacity is ideal for personable and friendly engagement. Marble Mountain Ranch was a great place to connect, learn, adventure and relax.

Great vacation at MMR. Heidi and Doug are terrific hosts and the staff are excellent. We just returned from a 6 day stay on our annual family vacation. There were 11 of us ranging in age from 85 to 13. Everyone had a good time. We highly recommend staying at Marble Mountain Ranch. Horseback riding on trails, gymkhana in the arena, shooting 22s, shotguns and black powder guns, paint ball, white water river rafting, kayaking, ax throwing, archery are all available and many are suited for those with lots of proficiency in the sport or are taught to those with little to no proficiency. The food is great and plentiful. We brought extra snacks for my big appetite nephews and only used 1/2 of the extra snacks. If you participate in all of the activities you are very busy. However if you decide to opt out of an activity there are beautiful vistas around the property, from your front porch to sitting at the lodge and reading a book or enjoying the quiet and listening to the wind in the trees, the river or stream. Absolutely recommend you go and enjoy the Ranch.

All I can say is BOOK NOW!! This is more than a vacation, this is a life experience. I knew this would be a very special family trip, however our expectations were blown! You cannot recreate this vacation anywhere. Doug&Heidi and all of their staff are the best. The cabins are super clean and beds super comfortable (and I’m picky). It feels like you are joining their family or staying with your Aunt & Uncle for the week. Every day is packed & organized! All you have to do is show up on time. We’re an athletic family and they wore us out (and accommodated all ages and athletic levels). We had so much fun river rafting and hiking. We don’t even ride horses and enjoyed riding more than we expected. Gun safety, education, and activities were so well done. The food truly was amazing. None of the photos do this place justice. We traveled with two boys 9&7 and they were absolutely in heaven. I loved the very limited internet access. A great way to get off grid and reconnect as a family and with other guests. Forever Grateful.

Completely enjoyed a fun-filled week at the ranch. The hosts/owners, Doug and Heidi, have been nearly 30 years in this business and have every aspect down to a "T". Trail riding and arena fun; rafting the Klamath nearly every afternoon (saw a bear!); being introduced to clay pigeons and black powder (not in the same event); ATVing; sharing delicious meals courtesy of Heidi with the other guests (and new friends); campfires every night (play an instrument? bring it!)...all of it choreographed in a wonderful schedule that allows for time to rest on their beautiful property including the cleanest pool I've seen in a long time. You don't have to plan or think about anything, just show up and enjoy! The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, and have the enjoyment and safety of their guests foremost at every turn. The animals are well taken care of. Our cottage was comfortable and clean. We had the meal plan but was glad to see a fridge, stove, coffee pot and microwave in our room in case we wanted to stay in. Heidi and Doug and the staff provide a personal touch to everything they do. This was the summer camp I didn't do as a kid!

Our experience exceeded our expectations. This remote family run ranch is a special place to unplug, spend quality time with family, and have a variety of outdoor adventures. Each day has a range of scheduled activities -- horse riding (trail and arena), range shooting, archery, tomahawk throwing, white water rafting, and hiking. Each activity is expertly guided to help you explore new things but feel safe. Everyone who works there is friendly and helpful. And the meals are homemade and impressively delicious. We are a family of 6 with 4 teenage boys and each of us had a wonderful time.

You know that feeling you might have had as a kid coming home from sleep away camp? You're totally wiped out from all the activities...but you can't shut up about all your favorite ones? That's MMR. And the amazing part is that each family member will have a completely different set of favorites. That's because Doug, Heide, and crew have it down to a science. The fast moving morning sessions of trail riding, shooting, and arena activities ensure everyone cycles through their favorites. Then the slower afternoon rafting and kayaking gives you a chance to catch your breath between the handful of charged moments in the white water. All of this fueled by great meals, the comradery of the small number of other families, and fantastic caring crew. It's not your standard dude ranch. MMR is sleep away camp for the whole family. If everything goes well, you'll come back with just enough bumps, scratches, bug bites, and sore muscles to keep that feeling alive for longer. But you'll definitely come back with smiles, a ton of great memories, family stories you'll be telling for a long time, and an appreciation for the land, the horses, and the folks that put it all together.

My family of twelve and I, had an amazing week at the Marble Mountain Ranch! We had 4 generations that enjoyed everything from horseback riding, to white water rafting, riding atv’s or toasting s’mores by the campfire. There is truly something for everyone of any age! The location is beautiful and the staff is friendly, helpful and when necessary, encouraging. The food was delicious and creative. We did not expect to eat so well at a ranch!
