Spectacular views from beautiful rooms and a remarkably friendly and helpful staff made this weekend getaway feel like an episode from Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous. Waking up to an expansive views of Richmond bay and the Sausalito Marina made 3 nights there feel as refreshing as a week in Maui.

You know you're in for trouble when you walk into a hotel and the desk clerk looks at you as a cross between an annoyance and something that's beneath her (Ms. Bree, thanks for that). Reserved (and paid for) a Hillside Cottage. Watched the desk clerk tap and tap and tap. Nothing much happening. Clacking of fingernails on the counter, clackity, clackity, clack. Again, not usually a good sign. Finally she sighs and explains they have an "oversold" situation. We can't have our reserved Hillside Cottage (again, what's the point of taking the reservation if you don't keep the reservation). But they could offer a lower standard room (Courtyard, view of nothing). Offered me a bottle of wine (that I guess I'd be paying $80 for), or an $80 credit at a restaurant I wasn't planning on going to. Finally offered a credit of $40 per night. I wonder how they would feel if the credit card I gave them was "overlimit". Or if I didn't show up for the reservation but wanted my money back? When I signed the papers, I wrote in "owed a $80 credit for room downgrade" - she said I didn't need to do that and acted indignant (like they couldn't possibly make a mistake, like, uh, not having the room I reserved). In my experience, when a hotel does something like this to you, they try to make things up to you. In this case they grudgingly offer a credit with not even an apology. To really add insult to injury, as I am leaving the hotel to get my car parked out front, I am informed by the front desk clerk that they only allow 15 minute parking there (obviously angry with me because I will self park and avoid the $66 in extra charges they want to whack me with) - bear in mind, I've spent more than 20 minutes checking in and have a long walk to the room which in the back courtyard farthest from their slow elevators. Then, I am told as I leave the hotel to run errand, and as my spouse is in the shower/napping that they might have another room after all. So we get to play room bingo at 9pm. I guess they really didn't want to offer a credit after all. Would you like to be greeted poorly, treated as an annoyance, and told to get your car out of their parking area (where there were no other cars, I would add), as they "oversold" your room? I think calling this poor service is being generous. Really deserved to be treated better than this. Well, at least the room was nice (except for the non-view).

Casa Madrona is a great hotel in Sausalito. The location is unbeatable, you can walk all over the quaint town. It also faces the picturesque marina. We stayed in a remodeled room which was huge and very clean.

I choose Casa Madrona ,because I thought would be out of the ordinary, but I was disappointed! The place is beautiful, and a very pretty bay view and marina, the staff was friendly and polite, my room was clean and spacious, but the the pillows were stiff, bulk, what gave me a neck discomfort, make me sleep without them, the bed wasn't comfortable either, and around 1:00 am I woke up with the door to the veranda completed ajar!! I put the chairs outside to keep them close, with very little success, as I try to lock the, notice that the door had not any hardware to keep them close, I was at the 4th floor, and with the breeze is very hard to keep a door closed when isn't any type of locks ! I confess that the bed at the San Francisco Airport Marriott was far more comfortable than the one I slept at Casa Madrona! I did loved the view!
