We have never done a safari before so we all thought it was a cool experience. I think that it is a little expensive but worth it to go at least once. We did not get to stay the night but we did eat at...More
You can hardly ask for anything more than what Safari West offers as far as glamping is concerned without actually turning it into a hotel. The only thing missing from the cabin that makes it a hotel room is that the walls are canvas, windows...More
We spent a whole day at Safari West in Santa Rosa. Staff was superb, facilities are complete and clean. Walking tour is very interesting with a close view of cheetah, a very elusive animal of the Big Five in wild safari in Africa. In my...More
Visited and camped overnight at Safari West a 400 acre wildlife preserve and home to 800 animals, featuring a tower of giraffes, a crash of rhinoceroses, a flamboyance of flamingos, and a dazzle of zebras. The African style tent cabins could successfully compete with 4...More

Hmmm . . . First of all your grandchildren will love Safari West. Just make sure you visit when the weather is neither too hot nor too cold. My guess is that most people spend one night and one day at Safari West. You can pretty much cover it in that amount of time. Be sure to book the dinner on the night you stay. To my knowledge there is no Amtrak nearby. I would drive and stop to visit other wonderful things along the way. Hearst Castle comes to mind. One of my favorite way offbeat places is a real working ranch near San Luis Obispo. They have limited guest facilities, I think it's called "Work Family Guest Ranch". If the kids are into horses they can go on a beautiful ride. Next stop could be San Francisco, lots of kid-related things to do there obviously depending on the ages. Then up to Safari West. Head home through Yosemite, well worth several nights, etc. Good luck with the planning
