I would say avoid this place on a solo business trip in the cold months. It feels more depressing than funky, with its old, slightly tattered furniture, low-rent bathrooms and sad throw-back vibe. I can recommend it, however, to a couple who might want to delve into retro-California, or to a family with young kids who are looking for good... More

Only stayed one night as I'm in transit to Miami. I arrived before the normal check in time but they obliged and found a room for me. The rooms are large and comfortable although a bit tired with age! The two gentlemen I dealt with at the front desk were both very helpful and welcoming. Would certainly stay again.

My family of 4 stayed here for 1 night before travelling to the South Pacific in Nov 2015. I had read a mix of reviews and was a little skeptical of our stay. I was not one bit disappointed. Yes, the property is older (converted apartments), but the space is generous and comfortable. Having a full kitchen and dining room... More

Don't be put off by the mid-60's motel vibe as you enter the place; it is a bit dated as far as design and amenities are concerned. However the location is great, the staff very helpful and friendly, and the room was immaculately clean. Add to that the very reasonable rates and the on-site garage parking and you won't be... This was a fantastic hotel. The location is amazing. So much within walking distance. 2 blocks from the Santa Monica beach and priced very reasonably. I enjoyed the nearby Saturday Farmer's market, with fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, juices, flowers, French pastries and a food truck with the best Mexican food. It's right by a shopping area, if you're in the... More

We just spent 4 days in Santa Monica visiting family and stayed at the Cal Mar hotel. It was a very good choice and we would not hesitate to stay there again. The hotel was built in the 50's around a lovely courtyard garden with a pool. The rooms, although not updated, were very large with a nice size living... More

Cal Mar Hotel is a great place to stay and completely retro cool !!!!! It was built in the mid 50s (I think) and has not changed much since, which gives it an unique charm and makes it stand out from all other (big chain) hotels by a mile. You feel like you travelled location AND time! Some might say... More

My husband and I live in Berlin, Germany and frequently travel to California. When we are in Santa Monica, the Cal Mar is our place to stay. We were last there in September 2015 and were once again delighted to experience the welcoming, helpful and friendly people at the front desk. The Hotel Cal Mar has a charming California retro... I have just stayed at the Cal Mar for 4 nights at the end of a 3 week trip to the southwest. The location is perfect within one block of the ocean and one block from 3rd Street Promenade. The rooms are spacious and comfortable if staying for an extended period and the tariff is try reasonable considering the how... More

We had a very spacious room with lounge, separate bedroom and small kitchen. Decor was dated but the room was comfortable and would suit longer stays as well. Pool was very popular and a welcome feature for the kids. Wifi was expensive though!

Staying in Santa Monica

Neighborhood Profile
Santa Monica
Santa Monica is a coastal town that maintains a balance as a tourist destination and as an area with a thriving local culture. On the beach, bikers, roller-bladers, runners and walkers move along the famed bike path enjoying the beautiful Los Angeles weather. The solar-powered Ferris wheel at the Santa Monica pier spins high above the water, while park revelers scream with delight riding the roller coaster. Inland from the beach, Third Street Promenade bustles with shoppers and street performers, where every block seems to have a musical or acrobatic act drawing crowds giving Santa Monica both the feeling of a laid-back beach town and a major commercial hub.
