Nestled near the beach and Santa Monica's attractions, Viceroy Santa Monica garners praise for its convenient location and modern, chic ambiance. While travelers appreciate the availability of bike rentals and commend the hotel's cleanliness, there is dissatisfaction regarding in-room amenities, with a lack of coffee makers and water replenishment drawing criticism. Some guests have experienced disturbances from noise, and the additional costs for amenities and early check-in have led to mixed feelings about the hotel's overall value. Despite this, the attentive service and stylish decor often leave a positive impression on visitors.

So much to like about this hotel. Great location, close to the beach and to the centre of Santa Monica, stylish and elegant rooms, the place feels a bit like an oasis.

Still, a few things that feel a little petty or stand in the way of being great. Despite a hefty resort fee, the hotel has no coffee machines in rooms and no water provided. No ice machine either though you can ask for some at the restaurant. Inclusive breakfast works as a credit but there are some exclusions and you are not told about them. Everything is also an occasion to charge - charge for early check in or late check out, charge full price rather than happy hour price if you want to take what you buy for happy hour to your room rather than having it in the restaurant itself.

If this hotel remembers to treat customers as guests rather than as potential lines on the bill, it has the potential of being absolutely excellent.

Our recent family 5 night stay at the Viceroy surpassed our expectations.
From our early arrival and being able to store our luggage until check in. To the complementary upgrade our family of 4 - all in one room - were wowed and made to feel extremely welcome and right at home.
Great location. Quiet room. Comfy beds. Spacious well appointed and luxurious bathroom. Windows that actually open to get some fresh air! It had all we could ask for and more!

This is our 2nd time staying at Viceroy. Our family (includes teens) LOVES this hotel. The hotel exudes chill/cool/unpretentious and modern— the rooms, the lobby, patio, the pool, the Sugar Palm restaurant (and is also delicious). Rooms are clean and spacious, love to sit next to the patio door—so great to have the patio door open when sleeping at night!

The staff are warm and welcoming. BJ was the BEST, he was so helpful getting us situated and making sure we had everything we needed when we set out each day (car valet, bikes, water, towels etc)

Location is fantastic, steps to the beach and restaurants (we love cha cha chicken and the Backyard ) but yet not in the total fray. Nice walk to Main Street shopping and restaurants.

Santa Monica has become our go to summer vacation and staying at the Viceroy is a must!

I recently stayed at the Viceroy Santa Monica for two days and had a mixed experience. The hotel's facilities are impressive, with some standout features, but the lack of polish in other areas made my stay less than ideal, especially considering the high cost.

Additional Observations:

Elevator Issues: On the second day, one of the elevators was out of service for the entire day, causing inconvenience for guests.
Bath Robe Size: The bath robes provided were too small, particularly for those with larger builds. This is a surprising oversight for a luxury hotel.
Ocean View Upgrade: While I was upgraded to a full ocean view room, the view was obstructed by a large garage and was not significantly better than the partial ocean view.
Bicycle Rental: The bicycle rental service was convenient, but the bikes were not properly prepared. The seat was not adjusted, and the tires were underinflated.
Late Checkout Challenges: The late checkout process was cumbersome. I had to wake up early to request a late checkout and was later locked out of my room before the agreed-upon time.
Reception Slowness: The reception staff was slow to serve guests, with wait times of 5-10 minutes per person.
Trolley Policy: The hotel's policy prohibiting guests from moving their own trolleys effectively ensures that guests must tip for trolley service.
Private Event: A private event was scheduled during my stay, limiting access to the pool and outdoor areas. While this was communicated, it would have been helpful to be informed of this when checking in.
Positive Aspects:

Gorgeous Bathroom: The bathroom was beautifully designed and featured a luxurious shower with excellent water pressure.
Comfortable Furniture: The furniture in the room was comfortable and well-appointed, contributing to a relaxing stay.
Excellent TV: The television provided clear picture quality and a variety of channels.
Overall:

While the Viceroy Santa Monica offers impressive facilities, the numerous issues I encountered, such as the elevator problems, bath robe size, and late checkout challenges, made my stay less enjoyable and not worth the high price. However, the hotel's positive aspects, such as the beautiful bathroom and comfortable furniture, were notable.

Quite expensive for what you get. Wifi doesn’t work, you have to pay to use the amenities on top of your room rate even in winter. Room cleaners knock on your door at 8am. Rooms we booked 6 months ago weren’t available yet they tried to charge us the same price for the lesser rooms. Also didn’t get breakfast credit even though breakfast was supposed to be included in our room rate. Very disappointed. Only thing that was nice was the room except no soap, shower caps, or the small toiletries that you usually get when staying at a nice hotel.

I stayed at the Viceroy shortly before the pandemic and felt that it was a bit too 'upmarket' for me at the time. Nevertheless, I returned in February 2023 because I know that it is ideally located, close to the beach and the pier, and I just wanted to relax and enjoy down time. It had changed quite a lot and felt much more like a 'regular' hotel.

Around 30 minutes after my late night arrival the hotel's wifi went down, so I went to sleep. Due to time zone difference, I awoke at 04:30am on my first morning and discovered there was no coffee machine in the room. Outside, there was torrential rain, so I cold not go and look for coffee. As there was no internet, I couldn't search for anything. I went downstairs and, after ten minutes, was given a cup of coffee by the staff.

A few hours later I ordered room service and this was great. The omelette was fantastic, the lady who delivered the meal was very friendly, kind, and considerate.

I went for a walk to the pier as the sun started breaking through the clouds and was reminded of the hotel's great location. When I returned, the internet was still down and, as there was no coffee in the room, I left again and went out to have lunch. The internet finally returned around one hour after I returned from lunch (but requires that you log in again each morning , which was a slight pain for me as I had taken my apple TV).

I went to the bar a couple of times and it was pleasant, with a friendly atmosphere and staff. I recommend the wings, but not the octopus.
I also sat at the pool for a while, with my feet in the water, the pools were crystal clear, warm, and inviting.

The cleaning staff came every day and were lovely to talk to, they were very professional and courteous.

The staff also helped me tremendously on my final day when I was absolute soaked after a 2 hour walk in the rain, I had already checked out of my room, and they gave me plastic bags for my wet clothes.

The hotel is very good, but, for the lack of coffee alone, I will try a different hotel when I return to Santa Monica in the coming months.

I really enjoyed my recent 2 night stay with my sister at the Viceroy. I checked prices at Shutters on the Beach and a few other higher end accommodations but landed on the Viceroy. Although it isn’t cheap (especially when you add in taxes, valet parking and fees), it was definitely less expensive. I like to visit my sister in Ventura but we often spend a few nights in the LA area after she picks me up at LAX. The Viceroy is just a block or so from Shutters which is right on the beach path so you have a good location. The decor has a relaxed CA vibe and is well maintained. The lobby has a good amount of seating. The pool is small but private with a nice outdoor area. The Sugar Palm serves all 3 meals and has a bar. We did spend $7 each on morning carryout cappuccinos but as my sister says “after all, this is LA”. We had a basic 2 queen bed room and paid a little extra for prime ocean view -plus we luckily got placed on the top floor. I stay at a lot of high end places when traveling with the husband and I felt the Viceroy was a really nice hotel although it isn’t considered at the top of the Santa Monica “food chain”. I would stay there again. Special shout out to John at the front desk and BJ at the valet stand. Every employee we encountered was polite and helpful. I’m giving it 5 stars because it was a very good experience and value for “LA $”.

4++++! We used Viceroy for the wedding block for my daughter’s May 2024 wedding at Bel Air Bay Club, and it was a great choice! You cannot beat the location across from the beach, and the understated cool vibe was perfect for our bicoastal crowd. While the price was a bit high, it was on point when compared to other area hotels. The rooms and backyard area are gorgeous and all of the staff were so kind. The bar area is perfect for groups hanging out- wish it were open later!

Special 5 star shout out to event coordinator, Desiree Ferrer, who was with us every step of the way from set up to check in ! Also the entire valet staff who could not have been kinder and more accommodating to all the various wedding needs.

Viceroy could easily be a 5 star group experience if they would remedy two small things 1. A dedicated reservation link for the block. The one the hotel provided showed all rates available, not just the block, which resulted in guest booking confusion.
2. Free morning coffee- there was no in room coffee makers, nor free guest coffee. The coffee bar at the restaurant was slow and expensive, and while they did bring a machine to the room when requested, it only worked the first day:(

To spite these minor hassles, Viceroy was in all a great experience I would recommend to all families planning a local wedding.

We were disappointed overall with the Viceroy and annoyed by several things. Probably the worst was we had a room right next to the service elevator that made a really annoying noise in our room and since the second guest elevator was broken they were using the service elevator a lot (at least they shut it down during the night). The bathroom was poorly designed with one tiny sink that dripped water all over the floor every time we used it and a not-so-great shower. No coffee maker in the room and no complimentary coffee in the lobby so you had to buy their $6 per cup mediocre coffee. The common areas were kept freezing cold - especially in the area waiting for the elevator which took forever because there was only one operational. But the gym was kept too warm. Service at the restaurant was pretty bad - having to request things multiple times and getting orders wrong in addition to some fairly rude waiters. Food was ok but nothing special and some of the portions were small. Several other small things which just added to the annoyance factor.

Recently renovated hotel is a delight. It is only located 2 short blocks from beach, 3 blocks from iconic bar/restaurant Chez Jay, and 5-6 blocks from Santa Monica Pier. Needed location closest to beach and only hotels closer are 5-star hotels that are at least double the price. Service was impeccable, but at this rate level, it should be expected. Provided housekeeping services each day, which isn’t a given in California. Only knocks were for pillows that didn’t suit me and lack of in-room coffee and jacuzzi on property. If you want beach views, you will pay more, but the proximity is much more important to me. Property is safe and secure and located in safe area of SM. They will provide beach items if needed and rent bikes if you want. We had high expectations and Viceroy exceeded them.
