I cannot say enough fabulous things about our recent stay at the proper . The hotel is beautiful, the staff is above and beyond anything we've ever experienced here or out of country. It was amazing to me , to experience this level of excellence. It makes me want to return soon.! I have stayed in Santa Monica several times at three or four different hotels over the past 10 years and this property takes the cake. The room was insanely comfortable with all the amenities you could hope for, we had such good meals. We didn't even leave the property for 3 Days .

The Fitness Center also was a highlight with a huge variety of equipment and immaculate. The best part though was the incredible staff and that goes from Reception to any server we encountered
In the restaurant, and really anyone we came across that worked for the hotel. I'm not someone who usually stopped to write reviews, but I thought I had to.!

Chris Rock once said "the hardest working man is...the short man". Proper Hotel is kind of like the "short man" of hotels. They don't have the pristine surrounding location but it doesn't stop the Proper Hotel from providing a "proper" hotel getaway experience.

Their service is impeccable and the property and decor are first class. My partner and I stayed here recently when we were in between moving apartments. It was a welcome reprieve from all the chaos that moving entails. From the arrival at the valet service to check-in at the front desk, we felt 5-star caliber attention to detail. The staff was attentive and were very quick to respond to our needs. One night we spilled our drinks on the bed and within minutes, the house keeping crew came and replaced the beddings. We called for last minute reservations for the rooftop dining and they happily accommodated even though it was full. Restaurant and bar staff, food, and ambiance were all on point. Our favorite part was the hotel itself and its Kelly Wearstler designed interior. Who knew tan monotones could be so chic and inviting. All the details mattered!

I recently stayed at Santa Monica Proper and was left quite disappointed by the experience.
Firstly, the room sizes were surprisingly small. While the design appeared quite striking in pictures, the reality didn't quite match up. The overall look and feel of the rooms, amenities, and services were more akin to what one would expect from a 4-star hotel, not the higher standard I anticipated.

Service quality was a significant concern during our stay at the hotel. From the front desk to housekeeping and the restaurant, the level of service was consistently below average. The minibar has not been cleaned or refilled, a basic expectation for any quality hotel. Furthermore, the absence of standard amenities like hotel slippers, or tea in the room, was noticeable. Our breakfast experience was far from satisfactory. The meal arrived completely cold, and after a complaint was lodged, the wait for a replacement was excessively long, taking up to an hour. This was not the level of service we expected from a hotel associated with the Marriott brand.

As Marriott Bonvoy Titanium members, we were surprised and inconvenienced by the lack of recognition of our status, which usually includes perks like room upgrades and complimentary breakfast. Our request for an upgrade was initially rejected due to alleged unavailability, a claim contradicted by available rooms we found online. Even after readdressing this with the front desk, the proposed 'upgrade' to an even smaller room (albeit with a balcony) was unappealing, and we declined.

The room temperature was another significant issue. Our room was uncomfortably cold upon arrival and took a considerable amount of time to warm up. This was compounded by the hotel's architectural design, where all floors are open without proper walls or doors, allowing the cold from outside to easily seep into the room.

In summary, our stay at the Proper was marked by a series of disappointments and service shortcomings, significantly detracting from the overall experience. I hope this feedback is taken constructively to improve future guest experiences.

Mediocre at best: Room advertised a king bed, but according to staff it’s a European king - not the same thing. This was very disappointing as it’s not what was advertised.
The bed however was quite comfortable.

Balcony door was broken, wouldn’t stay shut and let in cold air and a lot of noise. I requested 3 times to have it fixed and it was never fixed. Each day I returned to my room after it had been serviced the balcony door was open.

Black out blinds are not black out and let in too much light. This was very challenging to navigate day time naps with our 10 month old baby

Disappointed that there’s no one to open the heavy doors at the entrance and valet. I travelled with my 10 month old son, and it’s very hard to open the doors when holding a 25lb child. Not once did anyone open the door for me.

Valet staff very rude, for $70/night ! Big rip off.

Location is good, however a lot of sketchy individuals hang out at the 7 eleven across the street.

Reservations were very complicated, the promotions they had didn’t make sense and made it very challenging to book a 6 night stay

Everything you'd need in a truly modern hotel.
Room was well designed and thoughtfully laid out, I appreciated that there was both an iron and a handheld steamer provided in the closet, as well as the thoughtfully chosen bathrobes from Parachute and toiletries from Aesop.
The gym was also extremely comprehensive complete with a recovery plunge pool which afforded me amazing workouts everyday. Guest services and concierge was attentive and warm. Truly everything a modern traveller needs.

We stayed here in mid-February as a gift to my husband for his 50th birthday. The interior design is breathtaking, the staff is genuinely warm and friendly, and the housekeeping team had incredible attention to detail in our room. Housekeeping isn't something I normally think about beyond "did they make the bed and give us fresh towels", but seeing how they went the extra mile made us feel even more cared for and pampered as a guest. The rooms are expensive, but the value is there and more. I can't wait to go back.

We stayed here for 3 nights in March when visiting rom NYC.

The hotel itself is absolutely beautiful from a design perspective—from the lobby to the rooms to the roof, the vibe was welcoming, chic, creative, and playful. We stayed in a room in the newer building and really liked it, the room had a very comfortable bed, walk in shower, clothing shelving and even a mini couch. I loved how open air everything is and sitting by the pool was very pleasant.

We took advantage of both bars and the rooftop restaurant. The view was beautiful and food was good too.

The staff at the hotel was very kind (although sometimes confused about who was a guest and who was just there for drinks).

The location is great—close to the beach and lots of other fun Santa Monica spots.

Valet parking is extremely pricey (not out of the norm for this area) but we actually street parked our car and that worked out totally fine too.

Breakfast at Palma was delicious,
Hotel location is fantastic,
But…we were disappointed about:
hundreds of dollars of extra food charges billed to my credit card after checkout; calls to fix it were not able to resolve issue; I am still waiting for a comprehensible explanation
-lunch reservation at Calabra turned into bait and switch… we were “offered” the “lounge” or the pool (literally to sit in the pool area) in lieu of our reserved table. When we balked at this the manager actually pulled up our reservation saying “oh there’s nothing specified here”…does one need to specify that a restaurant reservation is for a table …in the restaurant??
And finally, the striking workers woke us up bright and early.

Design, service, ambiance…has it all. As soon you step into hotel you feel so calm. The service is superb and the food is delicious. The hotel has literally thought of everything in its design. Our room was quite quiet. You won’t hear any noise from PCH as it’s a few blocks away.

Hi - hotel guests are of course allowed to bring outside guests to our restaurant calabra (our front office or our restaurant team would be more than happy to help you make a reservation). We are asking outside guests to make reservations on open table for dining at calabra and in our lobby lounge Palma. Thank you
