I have stayed at this property multiple times, but this trip guaranteed I will never stay here again. Upon checking in, I went to my assigned room and found a smoking area to be directly outside the room. Everything in the room smelled like a 1980's Motel 6--the scent of cigarettes was baked into everything. I went to the lobby (not an easy task, seeing as you need to take two different elevator and/or stairwells to get there) and the staff was kind enough to move my room for me. I moved my luggage to the new room, which did not smell of smoke and left the hotel to have dinner in town. When I returned, I settled into the bed to watch a movie. There was something off about the smell, and I did sniff the sheets and pillowcase, but it seemed fine, and I chalked it up to my own brain. After all, I've been staying at Hiltons for years, and they generally seem good. Well, after my movie ended, I settled into bed to go to sleep, and my hand brushed something under the sheet. There was a TOENAIL clipping from a previous guest in the bed. I threw the toenail in disgust, and checked the floor around the bed. There were other clippings in the carpet. I was HORRIFIED. I called the front desk, and the woman was nice enough to switch my room again (she said they couldn't clean the room as the housekeeping staff at night didn't know how to change the beds... Not sure what that means), although she didn't seem particularly apologetic. They switched me back to the side of the hotel right by the smoking area. It was a higher floor, so the smell was not as bad, and there weren't people congregating directly outside the room, but the smell was still bad and my lungs are still raw from two nights in the room. I didn't want to complain again and switch to a 4th room, so I stuck it out. I considered calling Hilton directly to see about getting a whole different hotel in another part of Santa Cruz, but ended up staying at the Scott's Valley location. I will never, ever, ever stay at this property again.

Spent the weekend to visit family in Santa Cruz and brought along our 8 month old puppy. It was a great experience and loved the great location which is close to Scott’s Valley downtown and convenient to Santa Cruz.

Check-in was quick and easy. 2 waters provided for Hilton Honors membership. Friendly front desk staff and lobby bar staff. Hotel room was clean and two queen beds were comfortable. Curtains provided black out room, so that’s always good to have. Overall, nice hotel in line with the Hilton brand.

Very nice hilton tucked away from it all yet only 15 minutes from anything you want to do. Very friendly staff, clean well appointed rooms, great food! Pool and hot tub were great after long days hiking. We will definitely be going back.

We like this location because we have family nearby. The hotel is clean and comfortable. And the in-house restaurant is excellent. However, this "housekeeping on request" policy is extremely irritating. Completely uninformed, we returned to our room at the end of our first day and it hadn't been cleaned. Apparently they only clean the room every five days. My wife called for housekeeping service and was told, "they would try to fit us in". Which they did. Including, thankfully, replenishing the in-room coffee supplies. This “full service” hotel actually expects you to collect your own coffee supplies at the front desk every day. I have been travelling for business and pleasure for over 50 years and I have never encountered such lame service at a so-called “full-service" hotel. And to add insult to injury, they call this housekeeping service-on-demand “complimentary”, aka “free”. Funny, I thought I was paying for it. Yes, there are fine-print placards everywhere that explain the policy, but I just tune all that crap out. I especially don’t like being scolded to “conserver water” when the faucet provides almost no flow and it has to run for five minutes before you get any hot water. If they want us to conserve water, they should install a hot-water recirculation system, as many other “full-service” hotels have done. Yes, a hot-water recirculation system uses more energy in order to use less water. Pick your poison. There is no free lunch. Next irritant: Pool and spa hours. Inside the pool enclosure, there is a permanent professional metal sign that clearly says the pool hours are from 5:00 am to 10:00 pm. Very reasonable. However, on the locked gate, there is a hand-made paper sign that says 8:00 am to 10:00 pm. A pre-breakfast swim is thus not possible. Not reasonable. Again, this might be expected at a two-star hotel, but not here. Next irritant: Lousy maintenance. In the fifth-floor corridor, 50% of the overhead lights are either broken, missing their bulbs, or hanging down from their wires. Not very classy. Next (minor) irritant: No task lighting over the coffee prep area. As you prepare coffee, you are literally casting a shadow over the work area. And all the lights in the room are very dim. Finally, a note about security at the front desk. We did not initially go to the front desk to check in. We checked in online while enroute and used a “digital” key to go directly from the back parking lot to our room. Which is very convenient because it’s miles (and two elevator trips) from the fifth floor (back building) to the front desk. Later, when I waltzed up to the front desk and asked for my plastic keys, the nice lady handed them over, with a very nice smile. Without asking for ID. Not good; I could have been any random criminal. I certainly don’t blame the nice front desk lady for this obvious gap in management policy. In summary, I might stay here again in the future, but if I do, my expectations will be way lower next time.

As I write this review I’ve given myself lots of time to mull over my family’s most recent visit to this Hilton. Here goes, at just after 11:00 pm on a Friday night my wife and retriever arrive to wait to be checked in as the one clerk was helping another guest. The hotel clerk took my name, and credit card, and checked me in, although she didn’t initially bill me for the dog, as she stated “oh you have a pet?”. I said “yes does it not show this in the reservation? She said yes you are on the 5th floor, and asked me again to bill the pet fee, which is a cost of $100.00. Now I already learned this only after I booked this through Priceline. Meaning I paid for my hotel, and only after learned I had to fork over another $100.00, for my retriever. This is one of several times I’ve stayed at this Hilton, at least 3 or 4 times. First with out dog however. Having stayed at this Hotel before they always extended a $30. Credit at the hotel, either bar, restaurant or snack shop. I mention this as I called before I got to the hotel, before I checked in, and spoke with the desk who advised me, I didn’t ask, they told me to ask for Jeremy who wasn’t available at that time, but to ask upon check in if I could use this credit towards the dog fee. I mentioned this to the Hotel clerk, and asked if Jerry was in? She said no, he wasn’t in and that she couldn’t apply any credit and because I booked through Priceline, I wouldn’t be receiving any credit at all. At this point another women appears, and proceeds to tell me “I am very misogynistic“. I asked her “why she felt this way?” She replied I was speaking down to the clerk and being dismissive” she says this while walking away from me. The alarm i didn’t set went off at 6:00 am, tiny little alarm. It would be nice if housekeeping would check, I didn’t. I did go down and meet with Jerry, the next morning, this whole event, from checkin to checkout was eight hours. And nearly $400. I advised Jerry of what transpired, he essentially shrugged his shoulders and confirmed that no credit for this Hilton honors member was correct and that the $100. Fee was not a big deal. Take aways, last time I will stay at this hotel. The next night I was at the Hampton in Oakland and the experience was beautiful. So many other hotels/motels in Santa Cruz that charge between $20-50. for rover. Keep looking, save some money for the nice businesses in Scotts Valley like the Heavenly Roadside Cafe! They were amazing to me and my dog. Didn’t charge extra to do it either. They didn’t call me names either!

I booked online through hilton honors. After booking I received an email offering an upgrade, adding a balcony and a suite. The suite was nice, but they put us on the ground floor by the front parking lot. I don't know how you call that a balcony

Tired hotel that has potential to be great, but not hitting the mark. Bar/restaurant staff and food very good, but we were not hugely impressed by the rest of the place or reception staff. Despite having paid in full in advance they still put a huge hold on my credit card at check in, and then seemed surprised when I asked for a receipt on check out to confirm there was nothing to pay. Beds were comfortable but bedroom furniture needs replacing - the desk chair was so worn I’m amazed they think okay to put in a guest room. Disappointing view out of our window of a huge heap of tables and chairs piled up in a messy scrap heap. I’d expect better of a Hilton - this place is letting the brand down.

The good: the restaurant, Stonehouse, was very good. We have low expectations for hotel restaurants but was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food. I had the veggie pappardelle pasta and DH had the short ribs. We also shared the cobb salad and tropical wings as starters...also very good. It's a very odd situation because the dining room is actually in the hotel lobby adjacent to the front desk. It's got a nice ambiance and it's cozy but not something we're used to. The hotel rooms are very clean and comfortable. The pool and spa area is also clean and a nice perk. The not-so-good: when we checked in, the young woman at the front desk seemed overwhelmed. She was booking a reservation on the phone when we walked in and did not acknowledge our presence for at least 10 minutes. There was no one at the Hilton Honors desk. When an older man finally showed up at the Hilton Honors desk he also ignored us and seemed oblivious that his co-worker was frazzled and needed help. She did not know the answers to some basic questions and he wasn't helpful either. The property is nice enough and convenient to Santa Cruz. We would definitely stay here again but hope the staff gets better training!

I stayed here for two nights, checking in a bit late on a Friday and checking out Sunday morning. The property itself is nice enough, but the rooms need better servicing and are in need of either a remodel or at least some upgrades. For starters, the bathroom only had one bath towel. The shower curtain was ripped in multiple places. The A/C couldn't properly cool the room (I had it set at the lowest temp - 66 - and it still never got below 69/70). The nights were cool, so I figured I'd just open the window to get some fresh air - except the windows are blocked from opening more than a few inches. The TVs have a "guide" channel that scrolls slowly, but there's no interactive guide like most modern hotels. After checking in, I saw a sign that said housekeeping was by "request only", so on the second day, I called down to request housekeeping. I pressed the "housekeeping" button on the phone and was instead answered by the restaurant. I pressed the "front desk" button and it rang for 3-4 minutes before I hung up. I tried again, finally got an answer, and was told any housekeeping request needs to be made "24 hours in advance" and that there was nothing they could do. So, by this policy, I would have 1) had to know it existed, and 2) called *BEFORE* I could even check in to request housekeeping. The pool was nice enough except for the spiderwebs. The food at the restaurant was good. The bar service was good when you could get it, but one bartender on a Friday and Saturday night vs. a dozen+ guests meant that you were often waiting a while. For $300+/night, I expected much better service and at least housekeeping. For $300+/night *and* being a Hilton Honors Gold member, I just feel ripped off.
