Chaminade Resort & Spa is often recognized for its spotless environment and scenic location, providing a peaceful retreat away from urban hustle. The resort's romantic ambiance and live music are popular among guests, though opinions on the noise level vary. While the rooms and amenities like pools and spas are appreciated for their comfort and views, some visitors have reported issues with room maintenance and amenity quality. The service receives mixed reviews, with some guests experiencing exceptional care, while others encounter less satisfactory interactions. Chaminade is a special place for families and couples. The property has numerous activities to keep people of ages busy. However, the service is what sets the resort apart - from friendly bartenders to our morning server Katcha - you feel taken care of.

Overall, I would say this is a nice place that warrants being classified as a 3+ star accommodation. However, it is not a good value as they are charging prices more like those of a 4+ star hotel (and their website leads to that expectation). After the resort fee, we paid over $400 for a room for 4 (2 adults and 2 kids).

Pros:
The room furnishings and decorations were nice and updated. The room was spacious. The resort is handling covid well in that they have signs everywhere instructing guests to wear masks, and they have hand sanitizer and wipes placed in strategic areas. The pool was nicely heated. There are several activities on site (horse shoes, bocce ball, frisbee golf, several tennis courts, nice hiking trails, cornhole and pickleball).

They have a gorgeous terrace with views all the way down to the ocean. Although they were only doing take-out dining due to covid, we really enjoyed eating in this lovely setting. The newly remodeled common areas are beautiful.

Room service was pretty quick.

Cons:
The room was dark; it needed a window by the seating area and more lighting in the bathroom over the shower. Shower was not updated like the rest of the bathroom, and looked like a motel shower. Pillows weren’t great. Windows were old. Room was not well insulated and we could hear people very clearly who were walking in the hallway, outside or running water. The activity areas of the hotel were just ok In terms of appearance, and not particularly pretty, well designed or updated (pool, lawn area with games like bocce, horseshoe, etc.)

You are required to check out the materials for the activities (like the balls, bean bags, etc.) and give your room number. For the price they are charging to stay here, this seems petty and it is a hassle.

I am guessing that the information book normally kept in the room was removed due to covid, but this meant we were lacking a lot of information. For example, we didn’t know what time check-out was. We didn’t know if pool towels provided. There were none at the pool, and although I called the front desk and fitness center both more than once, there was no answer. Eventually, we went over to the fitness center and found out that they do have pool towels. We also didn’t know at first how to get the materials for the activities. We just felt like we were in the dark regarding resort information.

Overall, I woulds stay elsewhere next time. The Hyatt Place in Santa Cruz is a better value and it is not pretending to be a 4 star (or charge 4 star prices) when it isn't.

Daria, thank you for choosing to stay at Chaminade for your Santa Cruz getaway. We appreciate the support! We are disappointed that you didn't thoroughly enjoy your stay, thank you for the feedback you provided. You are correct in that we have removed many informational items from the guest room during this time, it sounds like we can do a better job providing this information for guests in the General Manager's letter received at check in. As for the activity materials, we do ask that they be checked out so that we can ensure they are cleaned properly, important at this time as well. As for the guest room feed back, that will be shared with the appropriate team members for review. We certainly hope that we can welcome you back for another stay.

The website said expect great service, which we always feel like starts with the valet/outdoor greeting. It didn't meet expectations. We were greeted, told to go inside to check in and then we could park ourselves. No offer for assistance, no personal greeting. The main building where you check in was very nice, inviting, and cozy. The area with the fireplace felt like a space you wanted to curl up around. We had dinner at the restaurant "The View." Our server was really friendly and nice, though the service not great. We waited probably 5 minutes before we were finally approached for beverage service. While others were getting heaters brought to them, we were never asked if we wanted or needed one, while there were many heaters sitting around un used. Our drinks emptied, and we're not promptly asked if we would like another/anything else. Cheese plate was good, calamari was not exceptional and sitting in a pool of its own grease at the bottom of the bowl. We asked for sparkling water and were handed bottles of sparkling water that we had to serve to ourselves. Dinner items were good, not exceptional. We enjoyed the walking trail, it was very pretty. Our room was in the 100 building facing the "forest." The room was extremely dark, very little natural day light and no good overhead light. The bathroom was also very dark. We had a jr suite which felt like it had lots of wasted space. There was a sitting alcove with a couch though the TV was around the corner facing the bed and not the seating area which seemed strange. The room was large, but felt under utilized. Hallways were nice/ cute decor (no elevator so you are huffing it on your own with your luggage to get upstairs). Definitely didn't want to spend time in the dark cavernous room. They had a list of holiday weekend activities which were obviously family-friendly catered, which we weren't expecting the resort to be such a family setting and were hoping for a more adult experience.

In order to get the type of room I wanted, I was forced to book directly and supposedly get some sort of fake deal rate which was expensive - basically $1,000 for two nights to get a “king executive suite” so we could have a door that closes in between two rooms so our baby could sleep.

For this price, not only do I expect exceptionally clean and comfortable accommodations, but I do also expect a certain level of service and decent amenities rom a property calling themselves a “resort.”

You need a microwave in your room to boil water for your baby bottles, or heat up baby food? $15/night. They probably pay more to store them than they do to offer them to their guests.

You want to partake in the fire pits outside by the pool? That’ll be $100 to secure your spot at a fire pit that isn’t half as nice as the one in my own yard. For this price, I’d expect s’mores makings and someone to stoke the fire for us.

And if you call to ask for any of these services, Veronica on the phone won’t really seem like she cares about anything other than telling you the price.

The second “room” we get in the suite has a giant window into the hallway letting light in all night so our son sleeping on the sofa bed complained he couldn’t sleep. Not to mention, we had to make that bed for him and they provide the sheets and 1 pillow.

And if you want hot water for your baby, you better hope it’s during restaurant hours and that your room is close to the reception area. There are no coffee, hot water, water stations in the hotel room buildings.

As for the comfort and decor, they did a good job putting lipstick on a pig. The furniture looks nice, but not comfortable, the lighting is terrible and the carpet should for sure be replaced.

If you stay here, it’s for the pool, gym, tennis and rustic location and to be up charged for everything starting from the 2 bottles of nestle water placed in your mini fridge.

Chaminade, there are hundreds of resorts in your price range that do so much more for their guests… will you take note and do anything to improve?

This hotel is not ready to be open during Covid. They simply are not properly staffed to deal with the demands being placed on lodging establishments. Mercifully, we are only staying here for one night. They are lacking in basic precautionary measures to ensure a safe and healthy stay for guests. The extremely small pool was absolutely packed with people and huge rafts. The lackadaisical attitude of the property toward Covid is appalling!!!

The website is a bunch of lies. There was nothing demonstrating the room had been sanitized. There was no markers on the doors of the rooms to show they were sanitized.

When we discussed the problems with the front desk they let us know that there was no manager to speak to. When we discussed the lack of hygiene and social distancing at the pool we were told “we don’t have enough staff to help with that”. If these jokers can’t figure out that a manager is needed on a holiday weekend and that supervision of the staff is required to maintain higher standards, they should simply remain closed.

The hotel doesn’t take COVID-19 seriously enough to keep its guests safe. We witnessed two housekeepers cleaning rooms without masks, one maintenance person working inside without a mask, and a staff member handing out towels and fitness equipment (inside) without a mask.
The pool was packed and no attempts made to distance people. Guests were at the bar without masks and no staff action was taken.
We tried to call the front desk to express our concerns, but the phone was answered-seven attempts.
We chose to sanitizer our own room, couldn’t use the pool and generally felt uncomfortable for the weekend.
Not safe.

We are deeply concerned about your observations, we have from day one implemented training and protocols for all of our staff, to the point where we have cancelled dining reservations and evicted guests for not adhering to our mask policy,. Not adhering to these protocols is a serious offense, one that might even jeopardize their future employment. I would love to speak with you personally so I can detail the date and times of these observations. I have copied our entire leadership team on your comments and in reviewing, none have witnessed anything this appalling. I'm available at your earliest convenience. We take the safety of our community, guest and employees seriously. I can be reached at 831-465-3422 or kherbst@chaminade.com. Kevin Herbst, General Manager

Totally overpriced, club members preferred, would be "resort and spa". We have spent a long weekend at Chaminade Resort & Spa, looking forward to the relaxation, spa, fine dining. It turned out that the restaurant does not accept reservations because it is fully booked forever. Weird thing when you look at all the empty tables kept for who knows whom. The spa was also not available and booked out. The spa amenities are open to the spa guests (not since no reservations possible) and the club members. The tennis courts were mostly occupied by the club members also. So basically as a regular guest you are left out to your luck with a forest "cabin" amenities at the price of Ritz Carlton. After complaining to the management we were eventually granted a place in the restaurant and a refund of $350 on the total hotel fee (16%).
I assume we should be thankful to be let in so such a minor thing like serving an appetizer simultaneously with the main course should not be mentioned. We never got to the spa. When checking out the promised refund did not show on the bill. After complaining again, we got the $350 off. Strange that such "mistakes" only happen to the hotel benefit and never other way around.

The overall grounds are beautiful, to give it a justice. The forest trail is not overbooked and available to non-club-members. The restaurant has a beautiful view and good food if you manage to get on the short list of preferred guests. Considering the secluded location and the lack of alternatives other than driving to the nearest cities to eat it is a weak performance.

I would not recommend to anyone hoping to find resort and spa. If you need a forest cabin, it is a great place, of course assuming you are ok to pay several hundreds of dollars for a cabin.

We thoroughly enjoyed our trip. The staff was friendly and accommodating. The hiking trails were easily accessible and beautiful. The spa and health center was clean, well equipped, and again, the staff was relaxed and accommodating. The restaurant food was what you might expect from a resort - just above average but pricey. Although the view and ambience make up for the average food and slow service. (The service was very friendly just slow).
The pet friendly rooms are bare but comfortable. There is no table although there is a small side table and chairs on the patio. The mini fridge is large enough to store a fair amount of food but there is not a freezer. The room looks onto a green space and stayed cool despite the warm weather. I didn’t notice a cooling or heating system because it wasn’t required. The bed was comfortable but the shower had low pressure and the handle was broken. There is no overhead light in the large room and the lamps don’t sufficiently light the space at night.

We took our mountain bikes and explored Niscene Marks and Wilder trails in the area - both require a car to transport as the trails on the property are for hiking only.

The resort grounds are well kept, we used the pool, the fire pits, and horseshoes. You can also rent pickle ball although we didn’t have time. Take your tennis racquet if you like to play … the courts were great.

The main building is beautifully appointed, with welcoming chairs and two places to sit and relax by the fire. We didn’t get to enjoy the bar but it was inviting.

My biggest complaint is that there isn’t any kind of a mini market for those little things you might have forgotten or snacks for the kids. And, the resort doesn’t have board games or movies available although we were there for the Wednesday movie at the view which was great!

Note for dogs: the leash rule was strictly adhered by all guests which we appreciated. It was barely noticeable that there were other dogs on the property.

We have an old dog that must accompany us wherever we go. We checked out several places in the Santa Cruz area and decided to go with Chaminade and I’m glad we did. It’s Super dog friendly and the grounds are huge with plenty of places to walk your dog and trails if you want to go off the pavement. We had a lovely room in the 800 building with two queen size beds and a nook where the couch bed was to accommodate another person. A small patio off the room was a nice place to sit and have coffee in the morning so long as it’s not too cold outside. We did not eat in the restaurant because it seemed pricey and we are not huge on restaurant food but we did have a decent breakfast there and cocktails and there’s $1 million view of the ocean if you choose to sit on the patio. I was able to get athird night free through reservations which made it affordable. I highly recommend this place even if you’re not bringing your dog with you. I forgot to mention that there is a nice pool and Jacuzzi and a workout area if you are into fitness.

Room already had issues with noise. We called upon arrival, executive suite (most expensive) room was vibrating with noise, front desk said they’ll look into it and then hung up.
Have 5 year old twins with us, and at 7pm, called down to ask for extra blankets. An hour later, called again as we had not received blankets. Shane said they will be right there. 15 minutes later, called back and was told he messaged housekeeping twice and had not heard back. He would call and get them right to me.
Then called back to say housekeeping won’t response and engineering is getting the blankets and I need to drive down to the front desk to retrieve them.

I worked as front office manager at a luxury hotel. This is about as bad as service gets. We paid the lost for the best room and have two 5 year olds trying to sleep but freezing.
